I think Weller 12 is better and more drinkable for a wide range of palates, personally.

Weller 12 every day and twice on Sunday!!!  Both are excellent!

Had the pleasure of sampling my first ever old fashioned in December and loved it. So I bought all the stuff to make it myself and I have to say...I did a piss-poor job at it! I've not tried to make another one since, but really need to bite the Bulleit (see what I did there?) and try again very soon!

Just started perusing this thread so sorry for be six months late, but I love an old-fashioned, and for the last year have been making a "freezer door old-fashioned." Basically a batched cocktail that I keep in the freezer ready to pour whenever the mood hits. For a 1-liter bottle, this is the ratio I use:

  • 23oz of 100-proof bourbon (Old Forester 100 is my day to day bottle)
  • 2.5oz of a 2:1 simple syrup. Demerara if you've got it, I use light brown sugar for mine
  • 1.1oz Angostura aromatic bitters
  • 3/4 oz Orange bitters
  • 6.5oz water (recreates the dilution you'd get from chilling over ice)

It comes out awesome. Went through 2.5 liters at our Christmas party last year.  If you don't want to take the plunge to a full bottle, assuming you used a sugar cube the first time, try making some simple syrup. 2:1 by weight of sugar to water and if you use brown sugar or demerara it will add some character. 2oz bourbon, 1-2 dashes angostura, 1-2 dashes orange bitters, maybe an 1/8th oz or to taste with the simple and see how that treats you.

Cheers!

Just the regular 100.  I still need to try some of their smaller batch stuff.

I just finished three fingers of Cooper’s craft.  Had a fire and drinks after dinner with the Mrs before settling down.  Doing a bourbon a day (just one guys, juuuust one) for September with some friend from Wisconsin.  Different one every day.  Usually just a 1.5oz pour, today I was feeling froggy.

Heat indexes are still over 100 here (at least until the last two days of torrential rain) so no fires for us,  but I like the idea of a bourbon a day.  Have a bunch of random bottles in the bar, and an E.H. Taylor Small Batch on the way, so I may need to do just that.

Finally cracked open my bottle of Suntory Roku Gin for a dry martini.  Can't recommend it highly enough.  Floral on the nose, the taste is citrusy and delicious with a little bit of balanced spice on the finish.  Even my wife who is not a gin fan took one sip and asked me to pour her one as well.  While I generally prefer a more London-style, pine/juniper forward gin for my gin and tonics, one of the clubs I play at had this behind the bar and it makes a damn good g&t as well.

Great recipe.....I have only done the bulk bottle for golf outings.  I like to make mine fresh when I drink them.  For a little more flavor, add a small piece of orange and good sour cherry and muddle them with the sugar, bitters and some seltzer or 7up if you like them sweet.

I too like to make mine fresh. I started with the freezer bottle in advance of a holiday party where we decided an "old fashioned bar" was more work than it was worth so batched up a few bottles. It was a hit and then we couldn't resist the convenience.  Always serve the freezer door version with dark cherries and recommend a spoonful of syrup. Love Luxardo, but, despite their ridiculous branding, Filthy Black Cherry has become my garnish of choice. Relatively inexpensive and quite tasty.  Prefer my cocktails on the drier side, but also always have some combination of simple, dark/rich simple, and honey syrup ready to go in the fridge for a top-up.

I like the idea of adding some oranges (whether slice or peel) to the bottle ahead of the next party we throw.  Maybe a more citrus-forward version, a sweeter version, and the OG....  I might try this out and will surely report back.....

I'm 68, I've played golf since I was 10. Any day on the golf course is a good day, even if it's not a good round.
