iopfer
Fairly new to posting topics, so hopefully I put this in the right place! I have had my current set of irons (Cobra Fly-Z 4-PW) for 3 years now, since I started playing golf. I originally got them fit with regular flex shafts. As I have improved, my swing speed has gone up as well. This past winter I got some Project X Rifle 6.0 shafts put on those iron heads (love them). My question is: How often do you get your loft and lie angle checked and/or adjusted? Should I consider this getting done as I have significantly improved (swing too) in the last 3 years? Thanks in advance for your time! Golfspy_CG2
Loft and Lie IMO should be checked at least once a year (probably at the beginning) if you hit off a lot of mats at the range, they can get knocked out of whack overtime. And also as you mention due to swing changes, they can need to be adjusted as well. I have some friends who get them checked two or three times a year, doing it their self. PlaidJacket
Interesting. Just this past December I took my clubs to my fitter to have him check everything. Just like you're talking about iopfer. He checked the L&L on each club to adjust them back to spec if necessary. Out of all my irons I'd say he adjusted 3-4 of them. And just slightly at that. Everything else was spot on. I too have improved my swing some this past year prior to having him check my irons. He said... and I did hit some balls that everything was ok and no further adjustments were necessary. Since I bought/fitted my irons back in Aug. '14 I've taken them in to him for an annual checkup. Can't hurt. downlowkey
Depending which Cobra Fly-Z setup you have, they may not really need a loft/lie checkup. BIG STU
I am lucky I have my own machine but I do not mess with mine unless I notice something consistantly different. Good example I got to doing a jerk hook with the 9 iron and it did not look exactly right to me. I put it on my machine and the lie angle was off 2* by my standard. How in the heck that happened I do not know. Set it back problem solved. Funny thing was this was on my 2013 Forged Cally Xs. When I played comp especially with my old forged blades I checked them every week. If you play a lot of rounds and hit off of mats I suggest getting them checked every 6 months Driver ---- Callaway Big Bertha Alpha Speeder 565 R flex- 5W TM V-Steel Fubuki 60r--- 7W TM V-Steel UST Pro Force Gold 65R----- 9 W TM V Steel TM MAS stiff---- Irons 2015 TM TP CB Steel Fiber 95 R--- GW Callaway Mack Daddy 2 52* shaft unknown junk pile refugee. MmmmmmBuddy
The easiest way to check your lie angles is to look at your ball flight. If you are hitting what you think are shots that should be tracking at the target, and most of them are offline in the same spot, you lies are off. Another easy check is to look at your divots. If the depths are uniform, you should be ok..If not, you might need an adjustment. If you need an adjustment, you should find a reputable club fitter who has access to a Mitchell Loft/Lie machine. Have them measure your current specs, and go from there.. Good luck!! iopfer
So I have the "regular" version of the Fly-Z irons, and they are cast. So if I understand correctly they do not get out of whack very easily. I know when I had them fit in 2014 they put the lie angle at 1 or 2 degrees up. Can't remember for sure. But I have about 170 rounds on them and many, many buckets of range balls. I might take my 7 iron in the the golf shop that fit me to see where the angles are at compared to how they fit. Is it worth It with cast irons? If I put some impact tape on the sole of the club and hit off a piece of plywood would I be able to check my lie angle? I would advise you to take your most used club (maybe that's your 7 iron) and ask the shop to check it against the original fit. If that club passes the spec test, the rest of the set should be fine too. The shop shouldn't charge you to check a single club, especially if that's where you originally purchased them. Impact tape will give you feedback on your lie angle but I would use something with a smoother finish than plywood for a makeshift lie board. Compared to forged, cast clubs are really hard and typically cannot be bent more than a couple degrees or you risk snapping the hosel. chisag
... I do my own work and have played forged irons my entire golfing life but when trying to bend cast irons (not made with carbon steel) I find it extremely difficult to bend most of them. As others have stated I have bent a few only to find the drift back to their original spec the next day. I would not be concerned with lofts or lies changing with cast stainless irons, unless they are 303 or something soft. I check my forged irons a couple times a season and usually need to bend one or two back to spec, although they are never off more than 1*. Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... revkev
Are you having a consistent ball flight issue with certain clubs? Are you having gapping issues between your irons? If yes, have them checked. If no you're fine. If you are having inconsistent issues it's a shaft or swing problem. I know that you wrote that you love the 6.0 but that is a seriously strong shaft. I could see problems with a jump from R to there particularly with ball striking consistency and/or gapping.
