revkev
Alright since they were tested I figured I'd throw this one on here. Not to comment about whether or not someone should be using them - you want them - go pay for them and stick them in your bag - they look great so why not. I know that a couple of our testers also post on the forum so I'm hoping to hear from them. I was very surprised at the spin rates on the 7 irons. Perhaps I missed it but I couldn't find the handicap range of the testers nor their swing speeds. Those types of spin rates with a seven would have me testing other shaft/head combos. Honestly I'd like to be in the mid to high 5,000's at least with my 7 iron - in a dream world I'd want to be around 6,000 but I can't possibly get there with my swing. When I went for a recent ball testing I was around 4800 with the 7 iron and the guy from Titleist made some equipment recommendations that got me the extra 500 rpm's of spin that I've need along with 6 yards of extra carry and about 3 yards of total distance. Now I get better spin rates with my G30 7 - around 5,300 or so. The greens at my club are rock hard 9 months out of the year - spin rates are huge. Any thoughts or comments? Also I do bag decidedly player's wedges - SCORs. I love those things and have them up to PW. So the short iron performance for this category matters a lot to me. So thanks doing these tests. null
Looks like about a 83 mph club head speed for most clubs assuming around a 1.38 smash factor for a 7 iron. Spin definitely seems a little on the low side across the board

Do you know your descent angle? From what I've gathered from watching TxG videos, it's important to balance both out. So, while you might need the extra spin, if guys are coming in steeper than you, they might not require it? Also, is it an average? It'd be cool to see the deviation numbers, I'm willing to be there might be some low spin testers in there that skew the average down, but that's just a guess. The last time I did an iron fitting, my spin dispersion was well over 1000 to possibly 1500 rpms between same flex shafts. This all with the same club head. And none of them were crazy lite or graphite shafts which could skew it to the spinnier side. That said, the shaft matters a lot to me. I know to some it's basically a non factor. cnosil
As most everyone knows I am one of the Most Wanted Testers so I will do my best to answer any questions. As most can tell the players irons weren't the muscle back irons that most people think of when they hear the term players irons. These were all cavity backs that were generally smaller in size. To be honest, I probably wouldn't participate in the plasters iron test if they were cavity back; I have tried to hit a couple they have at the labs and am not very proficient to make it worth testing. Irons tested from each set were the 5, 7 and PW and as I have already mentioned there was no consistency in the shafts. Don't ask, I don't know which irons had which shafts (generally it was the standard shaft from the manufacturer) My approach to the testing is not to pay attention to the club when I am hitting but focus on making the best swing I can without being influenced by manufacturer or the looks. Someone made a comment about the bigger variances in irons. I think this is because most drivers are adjustable and the staff did their best to optimize the drivers to our launch conditions which I think helped equalize everything. Irons on the other hand had about 3 degrees of loft difference and are probably less forgiving that the drivers. Protocol was to hit 4 shots and then switch clubs. There were order for iron type (long, mid, wedge) was randomize and there were 2 sessions for each type. The hole was set at the distance we identified as our typical iron distances. Overall I personally couldn't really tell the difference between each of the clubs and they seemed equal, but if you dug into the results you could start to see how some worked better for my swing than others. If I had to pick one that stood out for me from a perception of hitting well it would be the Edel irons. I don't know which irons were the best for me, I'll have to check and see if I can get that info. Yes, spin rates do seem low, but they were what was captured on the GC Quad. Not sure what everyone wants to know so ask away and I'll post responses. I definitely get my swings in during the testing season. Basically goal is to get 10 good shots per club so were were between 100 shots per session depending on how many got dropped or club data wasn't captured plus warmup time. For my I found that my swings got better as the testing progressed, probably because my tempo got better. The bigger challenge is not looking at the ball flights and launch monitor data and trying to change your swing to fix the variability. JohnnyPenso
I was surprised the Ping iblade wasn't in the testing group From the comment section of the article: This test is designed to be a NON-blade players irons test. The percentage of the golfing public that is at a skill level to warrant playing MB irons is so small that it would be reaching an extremely niche market of our readers. In my honest opinion, amateur golfers shouldn't be even considering muscle back options.

I just know they are what they are. I can't personally say they are right or wrong. Could be the ball? You are also averaging across 20 golfers. Throw a low spin player or two in the mix and the numbers will go down. I looked at the Snell/prov1 numbers and while different clubs the spins looks a little higher Low 4000s with 6 vs. upper 4s with the 7. 9000ish with sw vs 7000ish with PW. But From what I have read even the prov1 numbers look low. I always heard the first number of RPM should be close to the iron number.
