Ryder Cup Titleist Equipment Notes

Being so excited about the Ryder Cup, I don't want to quit talking about it, so thanks to the folks at Titleist, here are some equipment nuggets from both sides at the Ryder Cup.

Note the loft on the impossible shot Spieth hit on 17 on Friday and the reason for it...Funny he said that, as I had envisions of that actually happening before he hit the shot.

Ryder Cup: The United States completed a record-setting 19-9 victory at Whistling Straits, as 10 of the 12 players on the victorious U.S. side played at least one piece of Titleist equipment. Among the winners: Titleist Brand Ambassadors Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth; Titleist golf ball players Scottie Scheffler, Tony Finau, Harris English, the 2017 & 2018 U.S. Open Champion and the 16th-ranked player in the world; and the world’s 3rd- and 5th-ranked golfers, who are Vokey wedge players.

Players using Titleist equipment were involved in every single point earned by both the U.S. and Europe during the foursomes and fourball sessions, and eight of the 11 points in singles. Titleist golf ball players won seven singles matches Sunday, including Scheffler, who birdied the first four holes on his way to a 4-and-3 victory over the current World No. 1. Scheffler, playing a 2021 Pro V1 golf ball, went undefeated with a 2-0-1 record.

“I found the new (Pro V1) to be a little bit faster and a little bit softer cover,” said Scheffler, who put the 2021 model in play at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January. “So I was nipping it a little more around the greens. And then I picked up a couple miles an hour with the driver, so that’s a good change.”

Patrick Cantlay, playing a Pro V1x golf ball and bag full of Titleist equipment, including a Scotty Cameron Phantom X 5 tour prototype putter, also went undefeated with a 3-0-1 record, following his back-to-back PGA TOUR wins and FedExCup victory.

– Brand Ambassador Ian Poulter won his match Sunday to tie the all-time Ryder Cup record with six singles victories and maintain his undefeated singles record at 6-0-1.

• SPIETH’S SKY-HIGH SHOT: Perhaps the most memorable shot from the 43rd Ryder Cup came from Jordan Spieth during his Friday foursomes match. Faced with a treacherous lie in the deep rough, on an extreme, nearly vertical slope bordering the left side of the 17th green, Spieth used his Vokey Design SM8 52.08F wedge to send his Pro V1x golf ball soaring sky-high above Whistling Straits. The ball eventually landed 5 feet from the hole, as the momentum of Spieth’s shot sent him stumbling backward, forcing him to run downhill and nearly into Lake Michigan.

“I’d like to say, I don’t think I exaggerated that fall, you know how steep that is. Once I started moving, I was like, I've got to keep moving until I find a flat spot,” Spieth said. “It’s kind of one of those shots that you practice as a kid for fun, and you don’t ultimately want to have it. And the chances of it going there, you could roll a thousand balls off the green, and it’s not going it stay where it was. I hit a 52-degree because a 60 might have gone over the back of my head, and you know, just tried to flick it right underneath and hit it as hard as I could, as high as I could.”

• TITLEIST IS TOP CHOICE AT WHISTLING STRAITS: Nineteen of the 24 (79%) competitors this week at Whistling Straits gamed at least one piece of Titleist equipment:

– Titleist was the most played golf ball among Ryder Cuppers, with 15 players (8 U.S., 7 Europe) using a Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x. The most popular model at Whistling Straits was Pro V1x, played by Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, the 2017 & 2018 U.S. Open Champion, Ian Poulter, Tyrrell Hatton, Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick. Playing Pro V1 were Scottie Scheffler, Harris English, Viktor Hovland, Paul Casey and Bernd Wiesberger. Tony Finau and his U.S. teammate, who’s ranked 16th in the world, played Pro V1 Left Dot

– No brand had more drivers in play at the Ryder Cup, with seven players (T1) – Thomas, Cantlay, Spieth, Poulter and Wiesberger, plus the world’s 24th- and 27th-ranked players – teeing up a Titleist.

16 players, eight on each side, had at least one Vokey Design SM8 wedge in the bag – including World Nos. 3, 4 (Cantlay), 5, 6 (Thomas), 9, 10, 13 (Spieth), 14, 19, 21, 24, 27, 37, 43, 50 (Poulter) and 63 (Wiesberger).

There were more Scotty Cameron putters in play (8) than any other brand – in the hands of Thomas, Cantlay, Spieth, Poulter, Wiesberger and World Nos. 10, 21 and 24.

Aaron Dill posted a video on Titleist You Tube/Twitter account that talked abut the wedge/grind changes made by some for the week.  It was amazing how many went with the high loft D grind, but low bounce.  Mainly due to the tight firm fairways there.
