Smaller Hands (yes i know ha ha) oversize grips thoughts ?

Recommended Posts

im wondering about different grip styles for people with a smaller hand span although im 6ft with size 11 shoes my hands are smaller than average so i find i something have issues with rotation, im wondering what is the better type of grip to use ? larger as to be gripping the club equally ? using a wrap style grip or is there such a thing as custom or smaller tapered grips ? thanks guys

They're inexpensive enough and relatively easy to swap on and off, my advice is to buy a few different size & type grips to try them out and see what you like. I like midsize and noticed a big difference as soon as I switched over.

is it easy enough to do yourself or should it be done at a pro shop ?

Not sure how handy you are or what tools you have but I would say it is relatively easy and something an avid golfer should be able to do themselves.    Couple of ways to do grips:  solvent or air compressor;  posted a couple of videos showing the process below.  If you do air,  changing and reusing is easy so you can do a single club and vary the tape under the grip and figure out the sizing you like.

I’m a tiny human, my hands are right around 7”.  Even though we are pretty different, my experience might help by comparison.  In the end, I believe grips are 90% preference—but you won’t know what you like till you try it.  I use an air compressor to change my grips and it’s super simple.

After using standard tour velvet's since I was a kid, I  experimented using undersized grips after going through a fitting a few years ago. Sadly, I just did not like the feel.  It was impossible to say whether I was releasing the club differently, but I definitely compensated when using them.  They just felt like there was no grip.

I also put an XS Jumbomax grip on a driver and 8 iron when they gained some popularity. The same thing happened. I hit them fine, but didn’t feel good. No noticeable changes to my release pattern. I actually struggled with the texture of them more than anything else-they felt slippery.

I have since gone back to standard corded grips and feel confident in my choice after trying many different options along the way (many not noted here).  My advice is to go to a shop and pick a few things and spend some time with them.  Don’t forget about the less tapered, “+4” grips, align or ribbed grips, and to experiment with texture too. The benefits of experimentation are a good fit and peace of mind.

My hands are similar in size, I will say when I was younger it was all corded grips I've never seemed to have this problem, thanks for the above mate that's all but ticked the boxes of what I was asking and gives me somewhere to start cheers

I've done a number of grip fittings as I work in a golf shop. You might want to give the midsize grips a try.

Also you might try the Golf a pride MCC Plus4 as it might feel more natural and comfortable to you. The plus 4 basically is like adding 4 wraps to the bottom of the grip (right hand section if you're right handed).

Hope this helps a bit and if you have any questions just let me know
