How Do You Store Your Golf Mat?

Recommended Posts

I am looking at picking up a 4' x 5' or 5' x 5' mat to use for the offseason here in Wisconsin this year. I hit balls in my net and have a garage, and used a makeshift piece of old carpet with a cutout in the middle for a hitting strip last year, but it was less than optimal. Problem is I do not have a permanent spot to keep a mat out on the floor through the winter as we park both vehicles in the garage.

For those of you who have a larger hitting mat but do not keep it laid out all the time, how do you store it? Is there a way to hang it on a wall? Can you roll it and have it still lay flat when you go to use it?

I don't store mine, but it's thick enough to lean up against the wall and stand up. Now if you want it straight, you may have to lean something at either end because even after sitting flat on the ground it still wants to roll.

I have two ways to store mine. It will stand up so, (maybe thinner mats will not) I slide it between the sliding glass door and the vertical blinds. Currently I store it next to the chest freezer whereby I just slide it in…so I can slide it right back out. I can set my net up in 3 minutes (mat included). I hit outside most of the time when I am working on a swing change or as a warm up before going to the club. To me, mat practice is better for working on contact and swing changes. I hit the range predominantly to warm up before a round.

A former plus handicapper who must settle for mid 70s to mid 80 scores today.  After taking 10 years off due to back issues, my driver length has decreased by 40 yards on average.  I look forward to any training aids, shaft improvements, club enhancements to get back part of what was lost.

Hmm hadn't considered that before, but... Now I'm thinking you could drill / cut out two holes in the mat, one towards each corner along one side, and set two large hooks or large nails into the wall studs..?

That is what this would be for me, just a way to keep hitting through the winter as outside is not possible here. Contact and swing improvements.

I have a 4x5 and I can stand it up, but lately, I have been parking my car over it. the 4ft section fits between my front two tires and front camera keeps me from running over it when I pull into the garage.

My mat is made to fold in half to stand up out of the way. It sits next to the work bench in the corner.

My only concern with this would be it would get absolutely destroyed in the winter lol. Road salt and all the nasty dirt/gunk that gets mixed with it would spell disaster

@GolfSpy_KFT my current mat has the holes already for the tees and you absolutely could put pegs in the wall and hang it. Just build it with 2 pegs.

Haha well luckily my garage is big enough that I am not pulling all the way directly over it. Primarily just the front end of the car is over a section of it, and where we live, snow is a rarity anymore. So it definitely has variables to work such as location and garage length haha

This has definitely crossed my mind and would be super easy to do.

Next step is figuring out which mat to go with. Do I splurge on one from a place like Rain or Shine Golf or go with one off amazon that is more or less half the price?

I have bought two from Amazon and they are both good. Prob not as plush as the high end, but work great and have held up.  And mine stay outdoors 100% of the time.

Make those pegs a little longer and if the garage has a high ceiling you have a vertical surfboard rack 😄

I agree with Josh - I'm actually disappointed with my high end mat.... Don't need faux grass surface but imo do look for thick and heavy.

I went with the 31mm on mine and that was my thought as well. It's not the thickest out there but was close for the money I wanted to spend.

I got a 4x5 mat off Amazon earlier this year and it has held up well.  I don’t have space for a permanent setup, so I take the net down each time and store the mat.

I just roll mine into a circle and stand it on edge and keep it next to my clubs.  Haven’t had any issues with it laying flat when taking it back out.

Most of the time mine stays on my garage floor and if I have to pull a car in, I scoot it as far forward as I can and usually pull about 1/4 of the way over it. When I want to store it, I'll stand it up between my workbench and my wall, as it's pretty heavy and tends to flop over.

Another solution might be to get something like the car wash uses to hang your floor mats. One or two of those would probably do the trick.
