That big Golf Center at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is, for the most part, open.

 

Stopped in their last week while flying to Ontario. The bar/pub has been open for several weeks now, and the apparel shop has been open for about a week.  The simulators are finished, but they're waiting on a security door so the clubs can't leave the enclosed area - apparently TSA doesn't want people running around the terminal with golf clubs.  They figure it should be another week or so before the door is ready and they can start bringing in equipment.  

 

The Apparel shop is filled with the type of stuff you'd see an any airport PGA store - most of this stuff is 2016 Ryder Cup themed, since the event will be held locally at Hazeltine National.  Also plenty of accessories and stuff, including several copes of my good friend and PGA pro Bryan Skavnak's book, "Happy Golf Starts Here."

 

There will be 6 simulators - 2 large panorama type and four smaller ones.  The show will be staffed with PGA pros to offer lessons for the weary traveller and, for the flush of cash stuck in a long layover, actual club fittings.  The pro I spoke with said he wasn't entirely sure how it would all work out, but the store has a 7 year lease and they're willing to adjust the business model as necessary.

 

If nothing else, it's an interesting way to bide time before your flight...

Any idea what the prices are for hitting balls?

Nothing ever is at the airport  :blush:

 

The apparel prices weren't out of line compared to any pro shop or golf store.  I'm heading to the airport again today - will see if they're ready to rock yet.

I assume the one in Ireland, and not the one in Seattle.  Although Druid's Glen in Seattle is a quality course.

So the place is now fully operational, for the most part.  The simulators are all up and running, and they're stocked with several sets of Ping G30 irons and woods.  Turns out one of the head pro's there is Barrett Boe, an old friend and teaching pro from Stonebrooke Golf Club, where I used to belong a few years ago. Barrett turned my atrocious over the top swing into a mildly tolerable over the top swing...so we had a lot of catching up to do!

 

Turns out the biggest hassle for the shop is "club security."  TSA is very vigilant - and the staff has to do a club check every day to make sure all of the clubs are accounted for.  

 

One of the pictures below shows some black tape on the shaft of a club.  Every club has a special chip taped to the shaft with hockey stick tape.  There's an alarm on the door leading in and out of the simulator area that goes off if you try to take a club out.

 

Barrett says TSA will show up every to test the system and try to take a club out.  And the alarm better go off!

 

Anyway, I got to play about 14 holes at Druid's Glen with a set of G30's.  The prices are what they are, as you can see in one of the pictures below.  Hey, it's golf at the airport!
