  1. Good luck on the testing everyone.  It'll be interesting to see if this product has a place in the game or it ends up being the worst of both worlds.  I can only imagine having to deal with a giant diaper blowout in the middle of the round of your life.

Hopefully the testers give it a fair shake and there ends up being more pros than cons for them.

I am truly so excited to have this test back on our schedule!

LAB was such a great partner for our testers to work with last year and @GolfSpy_SAM can truly attest to how it transformed his game.

Big thanks to LAB golf and great to see another international test on the books!

Told you we had some more special member tests on the  books!

Awesome job to all the staff for getting LAB golf back again.  I was extremely jealous of the testers last year so it's great to see this one come back again.

So a thing happened today. Like many of you here, I woke up to an email announcing this test and was so excited to sign up. I've never been a tester although like most everyone here I've applied many times before. This time feels different. I haven't hit any Cobra irons recently and I had not idea which option to select for my application so like any golf obsessed person I went to the PGA superstore at 3pm on a Tuesday to try out a few. I'm a lefty so the options were limited to say the least but I didn't let that get me down. I was working on hitting a fade with the King Tour 7i (project x lz 6.0) and this happened!

I've never hit a hole in one in real life or on sim golf despite thousands of rounds of golf and far too many darts that nestled within a foot or two of the pin. Today was the day and I did it while testing a Cobra in order to apply for this test! If that's not destiny then I don't know what is! @GolfSpy_APHhow do I get all the likes so everyone sees this! haha

P.S. does a driving range sim hole in one count?

Congrats on the virtual hole in one!  Do we all get a free virtual drink now?

Im curious on fitting experience as well, has anyone demo or had any fittin at club champion or Golftec those tend to be stored they work with. Wonder how well they do with weight adjustment and set makeup. Like mentioned above they may only have 7i available.

I asked Club Champion ([email protected]) what their process was for the SMS irons and this was their response:

"At this time, we do only have the 6 iron club head component for the iron fitting of the Edel SMS irons.  We will absolutely help get you dialed in on the proper shafts and how the weight distribution should be.  Then, Edel has a full breakdown, based on your results, on how the rest of the set should be ordered."

Not sure how other fitters handle it but I would assume for most it would be cost effective to only have the 6/7 iron on hand, and then dial in the moveable weights for the clubs once you actually buy/receive the clubs.

Only one more day until testers are announced!

Thank you all for signing up and following along with this test. We will have the testers announced Tuesday April 11th as we go through the more than 4000 applicants!

Another great turn out for the forum and don't forget we still have Red Rooster open and launching this morning OnCore!

You can find both in the Testers Wanted section linked.

    Is it Tuesday yet?

Normal tests get between 2-5k for registrations and depending on the main site and their social push it can fluctuate. Good example is Red Rooster. We are at 1200 which is only from the forum Newsletter, social and such. Main site will do theirs Thursday for that test and we will see another 2k or so signups.

Only 1% of sign ups have 50 or more posts and usually 90% or more have only ever applied to be testers or have fewer that 3 posts.

Edel being smaller gets less attention then Callaway, but maybe we will do a competition between the two groups? Any ideas?

    Best irons only round?

That's a really good idea.  Make it an irons only version of the Cobra challenge.  I would think most people have some way to track their shots these days, and if they don't, bring along a pencil and a notebook!

  7. Great reviews @bens197, @Bulldog, @Dragon3, and @revkev.  Sounds like the Mezz worked pretty well for all four of you.

In any of your conversations with LAB Golf, did they mention getting more demos out into the wild?  Rev made a great point that people will drop $550 on a new driver each year, but with those you can go to any Golf Galaxy, PGA Superstore, or even your local course to get a quick and easy fitting.

Seems like sales of this could really take off if they could get the clubs into more people's hands on a trial basis.

My Mezz.1 arrived Tuesday late afternoon.  Because I had tickets to a Rays game afterwork on Weds and then again Thursday afternoon I was bummed because I thought it might not be until Friday that I got to take it to the course for the first time.  Thanks to Shane McClanahan, the rest of the Rays and the Cardinals, I was dead wrong.  Left work at 12:15 for the game, made it to our seats in 17 minutes and home by 3:47!  I quickly changed into golf attire, texted Sam Hahn who wanted to give me some pointers on what to expect and went off to the club to putt.

My first impression of the Mezz.1 was, “Oh my this isn’t ugly like everyone said it would be, this looks like a piece of art.”  Of course, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, but I love the way it looks.

In regard to performance Sam had suggested doing one handed putting drills, a thumbs off drill and moving the ball up in the stance, although he acknowledged that everyone is different with that.  I had to try a few normal putts first all of which missed right.  My guess is that this was because I’ve been subtly closing the end of my putter to keep the ball online for sometime.

As an aside I have long contended two things about putting.  The first is controversial except to say that the numbers of logic bear me out.  I believe that putting is overrated.  You give me your story about guy who made 180 feet of putts in his round on 18 strokes and I will tell you about the topped tee shot that I had when the one miserable swing covered 300 feet or the reality that of the 34 putts you took yesterday, nearly all the ones that were holed could have been holed by any club in your bag.  Regardless while I think puttering is over rated I still know that it is extremely important and that for many it’s the quickest way to shave strokes.  For starters it does not take the same physical skill set of the rest of the game and its normally free to practice it.

The second is very simple.  I think that most putts are missed because of mishits.  Putting requires three things to be successful, a proper read, the proper weight of stroke (or whatever other term you prefer for the speed at which you will hit it) and the proper strike.  I firmly believe that we mishit a lot more putts than we are willing to own up to.

It’s L.A.B. golf’s contention that their lie angle balance putters and zero torque shafts eliminate the impact of mishits.  It’s basically a point and shoot.

What I found when I started the 1 handed drill was that this seemed to be true, at least at first blush.  After about 10 of those I was starting to wonder if I shouldn’t consider putting one handed all the time!  Thumbs off, not so much, nor did I really see the benefit of it.  My first impression there was, “I better go to you tube and see if there’s a video because I can’t be doing this right.”  There is and I wasn’t.  I’m not so certain that I need to move the ball forward.  I feel far more comfortable with the ball position back off the front foot a bit, but time will tell there.

I’m hoping to play today, Saturday, weather permitting. I’m anxious to see how it works on the course.  It’s windy and wet and there’s a high chance of rain although we might be able to play through it.  Let me know if you have any questions and I will yack at you again soon.

I have an important question for you Rev!  Can you ship your Mezz.1 to Wisconsin so I can try it out?

I'm really interested to see how you end up getting along with this putter.  Like you I've gamed an Evnroll ER5 for quite some time.

Great job guys... definitely seems like a good product and could use some tweaks to make it stellar. I think my biggest question after reading is do you think this is a sustainable model and something that can be brought to more devices in the future and for potentially cheaper? Is it worth it and do you think the added features are something you would like to see on more rangefinders?
Right now I am imagining a normal video camera that has the flip out screen and maybe that is a future model type that could be looked at so the screen is bigger and maybe more functional then the little dot and can be stored if you didn't want or need to use that feature at the time.

That's a great question.  While there is definitely room for improvement with the SL2 it would still fall a bit short of perfection in that it doesn't incorporate any type of shot tracking or strokes gained capabilities.  I think the Holy Grail of devices would be something that combined a rangefinder, GPS, green undulation, shot tracking, and strokes gained statistics.

I'm sure the biggest question a lot of these companies face is whether to create a standalone device like the SL2 or to develop a robust phone app that could cover pretty much everything but the rangefinder function.

  10. Really interesting results from my comparison of 4 devices last night.  I ended up getting data for 6 different locations and some trends definitely started to appear.  I'll give more complete details during my final write-up in a few days but for now here were the big observations:

    • SL2 and Bushnell had the exact same pin yardage on 3 of the 6 locations and were never off by more than 2 yards.
    • Largest GPS discrepancy was 7 yards which occurred three times for back of green yardages.  Pin locations for these instances: 80, 151, and 223.
    • From the 150 yard stake in the middle of the fairway I had the following readings.  The pin was also very near the center of the green.

  11. Another day of testing set for tonight.  I printed out a sheet to track Pin, Front, Middle, and Back yardages for the greens against my other GPS devices.  Most of the time I rely on a combo of my Bushnell and Arccos, but I dug the old Garmin Approach G3 out of the basement for this one.

Not exactly sure how to track the slope function but I think there is a way to get it in the Arccos app.  I'm hoping to check at least 5 holes.  I would do more but I don't want to slow down the entire course as I check 4 different devices on every shot.

So it was an interesting weekend of testing for me. Turns out my camera on my iPhone quit working yesterday. Went to take a pic and got nothing but a black screen.  Went back today with a notebook and wouldn’t you know it, the SL2 battery died lol. Turns out the only hard data that I got to do was battery life. Managed to get 6 full rounds in the initial charge. I would think getting 1 more round shouldn’t be a problem from a completely full charge.

Hopefully work isn’t too hectic this week and I can get my phone fixed.

Thanks for the reminder to recharge my SL2.  I'm used to the Bushnell model of putting in a new battery each spring and then forgetting about it for the rest of the year.  I do like the extra features of the SL2, but there's something to be said about once a year maintenance with a simple rangefinder.

Nothing crazy or unexpected with my round on Sunday.  I did verify that my home course does not have the green heat zone/slope feature mapped out which is kind of a bummer.  I would have loved to see this:

    But instead I saw this:

    IMG_2811.JPG.3d149bb63011210a9dd29223fb476b2c.JPG

18 more holes on Thursday and then two rounds this weekend.  Should have a pretty good idea if this is a best of both worlds product or more along the lines of product that has a lot of great ideas but doesn't just match up.
