Golfing in the wind... Uhh ya..

So at what point is it too windy for you?

I played to day and it was a steady 25-35, with gusts to 50.

When I started I was thinking oh brother, what have I gotten into... I had to wear my hat backwards often to stay on, I hit 8 irons 180 yds, as well as 120 yards!

But all of a sudden after a few holes, I started digging it! Side wind shots were laid out, and the wind blew them in, easy PW,s going 150. Drives going 280, or 210 haha.

At the end of the day, shot a 79 and really enjoyed it.

How do you feel about the wind? I might add, it was also 80 degrees...

Hot wind like that sucks, I can handle it but I don't prefer it. I think the worst wind I've played in was during this one tournament when it was raining, cold and windy. I didn't have an umbrella or rain gear which felt miserable. I guess for me it's hit or miss when it comes to the wind.

I enjoy it occasionally.  When we went to Scotland,  Muirfield was about 60 degrees, sunny, and literally 30-40 mph winds the entire time.  Can't think of a more fun way to experience that course.  Allows you to try different shots and just have fun.

My home course is windy most days.  Last year for our club championship it was 95° and 25-25mph sustained wind with gusts to 30-35mph.  I actually enjoyed playing in those conditions and shot one of my best rounds of the year on Sunday.  Since I play the same course for 99% of my rounds each year sometimes it's actually nice to have rougher conditions.  It's helps the course play differently and it can be a lot of fun.  Thats not saying I want to play in that wind all the time, but every once in a while is just fine.  Plus we have a few par 5's that become like par 4's when they are with the wind, it's always fun to have eagle and birdie chances :)

For me, it is definitely too windy to play when your ball won't stay on the tee (the Links at Bodega Harbor last year- a windy place more often than not). I don't mind breezy conditions with the occasional gust, but a steady wind drives me a little crazy. One men's club tourney last year was played in cold, windy and rainy conditions that were just miserable. Golf is no longer fun in that kind of weather. If it hadn't been a four-ball tourney, I may have w/d (couldn't leave my partner hanging- and we placed pretty well despite being ALL OVER the place). Call me a sissy if you must, but this California Boy is a fair weather golfer!

I played Sunday at Marine Park GC in Brooklyn, temperature in the low to mid 40's, steady wind of about 20 mph, gusting quite a bit higher.  It was a great day!  Despite the waterlogged fairways and greens, some cups still with solid ice - they had two pin placements per hole, so at least one was free of ice per hole, but almost all were full of water.  My shoes kept my feet dry; my playing partner was complaining that his feet were soaked and frozen after six holes.  My cheap Etonics outclassed his Adizeros and my Zero Restriction jacket was completely wind proof!

Anyway, I found that solid contact was even more of a premium than usual, and I was having a pretty good ball striking day fortunately.   The layout of the course was such that most holes played either into or away from the wind.  There weren't really any shots perpendicular to the wind.  Tail winds were trickier to judge than headwinds and the cross breezes I thought.  Trying to judge temperature adjusted distance, then add something for wind assistance was rough.  We clubbed down on on a par 3 with a big tail wind, but the wind was knocking the ball down, almost like a billiard ball bouncing off a rail.  The fairways were completely waterlogged, so we didn't get any rollout, it had to be all carry.

Anyway, I had an awesome time, it was great walking the course just a few days after the polar vortex.

Let's face it if you are going to play golf you're going to play in the wind. Might as well enjoy it. I've played in every condition imaginable including the eye of a hurricane. No wind then. :)

Fairways:  Ping G410 5, 7, 9 wood  Alta CB red 65 R flex

Irons: Ping G430  7-PW, 45, 50 Alta CB black 65 soft R flex

Wedges:  Ping 195 S54, E58

Wedges and irons are - 1/2” and one degree flat

Putter: Sacks Parente Duke 32.5”

Ball: Titleist Pro VI or Callaway Chrome Soft X ls

While not at the same time I was fit for every club in my bag as well as the Pro VI ball. I use the chrome soft x ls on my league course.  It has much softer softer greens than the club that I belong to.

I’m on a mission to shoot my age - lifetime lowest round is 66 and I’m currently 67.

Of my more recent rounds, one of my better ones was in the wind.  I focused on flight control more than anything and it paid off big time.  I raked in some cash that day too, as my normal foursome members don't play so well in the wind due to them hitting it high all the time and not being able to flight it. I was stinging my utility iron all day off the tee and keeping it low and outdriving them lots of times because they do hit it so high.  Wedges?  Fughettaboutit, they're toast because of the high flight they hit.  I have learned to play for the front of the green in the wind and let me chipping and putting carry me.  I'd rather have a chip or pitch from the front of the green than run it through by a mile trying to knock it down and not allowing enough for the release.  That's just how I manage the course in the wind though.  That and try not to get fancy with guessing how much the wind will effect the ball.

In the afternoons we often have over 25 mph winds.  I wrote a thread about this a a year or two ago, and Chicago is the windy city and averages 12 mph and the wind here averages 14.  So wind is part of golf here.  Days where the wind is 10 or less, I consider calm days.  I do not mind up to 20 mph at all, but when it gets above that, it becomes pretty serious.  Above 20 or so, the wind effects the putts, at least on our greens.  Tomorrow is supposed to be the first day this year where the winds are less than 25 mph, and they are still supposed to be 15.

We have 5 greens that when the wind is 20+ from the south, the predominate direction, that are the wind will majorly move the putt.  On weekends you can count on the pins being in those areas.  While I am normally a very good putter, I got out of position on Sunday because of the wind and ended up having 2 three putts and 2 four putts on these holes.  I missed 4 times from about 3-4 feet because gust of wind blew it up the slope.  But then I drained about a 50 footer to make up for it.  But I still shot a 79 or 80 so I am not too disappointed.

While most people talk about how much it effects distance, I can adjust for that.  It does not bother me to hit a 3 wood from 150 yards.  It does not call my manhood into question when I pound the driver 180 yards on one hole and then 280 on the opposite direction.  What bothers me is the difficulty in controlling the distance around the green.  That 10 feet extra roll or less roll will add strokes as quickly to the score as hitting it into a hazard.

Because of this, I am trying to focus on getting into the hole in three more shots, when planning my approach shot, when the wind is up.  Mostly by aiming for the center of the green or the largest part of it.  Maybe I can get lucky and sink a long putt, like I did Sunday.  But by not getting below the hole on my first putt, or close enough to the hole on my first putt, I cost myself at least 6 strokes on Sunday.

However, the key to still having a good round when it is windy is to recognize scoring will be difficult and focus on making solid contact and having a good time.

I don't mind playing with a little wind. Last time I played, I hit a 380yd drive downwind and coming back into it, I hit a 6i from 130.......I'm not a fan of that wind, but I couldn't pass up a 70* day in January.

No kidding, I hit one about 330 yesterday with the wind downhill. Thru the fairway into the dang drainage ditch. Biggest hit of the day... For a bogie!!

And a 9 iron 167. I like playing with the wind! It makes me feel like a big boy, haha

I've only played rustic that one time, in the fog, and blind for the front 9. But no wind that day.

It is a beast in the wind! I know a lot of guys won't even play it when it's windy.

I gotta get back out to that track, it was fun, but you needed to play a club short on approaches, cuz it was so hard. Are the greens holding better now?, I would guess its hard as a rock after this dry windy stretch

No they don't hold at all! It's a great track and it gets more fun the more you play it! The first time I played it i hated it- I would hit a good shot and it would end up sliding of the back/side/front of the green. lol
