So I get an email from the social media director at Leupold yesterday, telling me I have won this month's social media contest, the Leupold Fastest Foursome Giveaway. The prize? 

 

Their new GX-4i2 rangefinder!

 

Yippeee for me, right?

 

The email says that since the prize is valued at over $600, I'll need to fill out and send in a W-9 form to make the IRS happy.  As you all know, a W-9 requires a social security number.

 

I'm feeling at little apprehensive about it all.  Anyone have any experience with this?

 

I'll be calling Leupold directly today at the number on their website to see if I can get an answer...

The over $600 amount is correct. When we give prizes away we always keep it under that so we don't have to collect forms.

Welcome to the Infernal REvenue Service.  Any gift over $600 means reporting it via W-9 so they can bill you for the tax on the gift as income.

Just spoke with the PR department at Leupold - as you guys say, this is an IRS requirement.  I was just worried that since I had entered the contest via Twitter that I had got hacked and would giving my SS number to someone who shouldn't have it.  

 

Impressed that the dude called me back so quickly!
