Cutting driver shaft

jerry.wilson

Recommended Posts

You can Judge, and I have in the past and I like the result...but I have found myself slipping back up the shaft.

I would say, choke down and see what the results are. If they're to your liking, make it permanent by cutting the shaft down.

I don't like choking down on the driver. Just doesn't feel right to me so it's harder to see if there is any benefit or not

My money says you're on the right track.

The stiffer shaft worked like a charm! . Baby draws with an occasional hook however I can deal with that. Hawt dang it's on like donkey kong! I love it when a plan comes through...

for those that cut driver shaft down... a couple questions:

1. does it correlate to your height?  i.e. if you're 6'5" a 46" shaft might not feel long but if you're 5'8" it might seem that way

2. after cutting your driver down did you cut down your fairway (3) wood(s)?  My understanding is that you want around a 2 inch difference between a 3 wood a driver - relatively speaking.

I'm thinking of going from 45 to either 44.5" or 44 and dropping the 3 wood down to either 42.5 or 42. (I'm 5'10")

Thoughts?

Another shorter than average player here.. (5' 8.5")

Driver is 45". Always has been, always will be. This is the length that I grew up playing, and the length that I hit the best.

Fairway wood is slightly under length at 42"

Irons will fluctuate between -.5 and standard length, depending on the set.

Putters... don't get me started on putter lengths..

2 things that I see here:

1 - it's not just a function of height. Some people have longer arms, etc.

2 - everyone is different, and is fitted differently for different reasons.

Yep... and some people bend more - or less - at the hips so the driver sits "comfortably" for them, some folks choke down further, some have a shorter backswing so it's not a challenge to get a long driver back to square at impact, etc.

A lot of factors involved ... I was just trying to get a feel if there was a pattern.

  • 3 years later...

You need to add 24 grams of weight to the head to achieve the same swing weight which is a lot. Most driver head weights are around 200 grams so you'll need to increase it to 224 grams which is a little heavier than the weight of a 5 wood. See if you can look up the trimming instructions of your model of shaft and you'll have to tip trim it , most likely an inch and then butt cut to length. As for the weights you can add a tip weight and either hot melt, tungsten powder, lead tape or if your driver has adjustable weights buy a larger one. But be careful with the weighting because too much weight forwards or backwards will affect spin rates and to much toe or heal will affect curvature.

Callaway Epic LS driver. Cobra baffler 4 wood. Callaway Diablo 3 and 5 hybrids. Callaway Diablo forged irons 5-pw. Titleist Vokey 50 & 56 wedge. TaylorMade Big Toe 60 degree lob wedge. Yes! Sara long putter.
