StrokerAce
Some pics from my trip to Pinehills last weekend (Nicklaus course); #8 rated public course in MA... Nice looking clubhouse... didn't take a pic but they have about 6 college aged kids ready and waiting; they take your bag, put it on a cart and drive the cart to the range for you. (range balls are free) grass range with mats for the winter I see why they call it "PINE" hills now ... used my hybrid and chipped onto the green for a 2 putt bogey A lot of the par 3's were like this... heather all around... bunkers guarding and hitting into a green that looks like it was carved out of a group of pine trees one of the flatter fairways on the entire course... green guarded in front by water; you've got to be comfortable with your carry distances out here Heather and bunkers all along the right with your best landing area to the left but blocked out by the trees from the tee box undulating fairway with pin tucked on back left... learned my lesson here and played it out to the right and got up and down tee markers were all carved out of granite... very nice... as you can see the fwy undulates (again) with bunkers/rough strategically placed target shot here - 155... don't want to be on the hill in back (green is very fast) and bunkers short and right... managed to get it on the fringe and get up and down long and fairly narrow par 5 - in the trees and you're dead... no finding balls in there; but look at all of the bunkers! SHEESH! You better be comfortable with getting out of the sand on this course. one of my few birdie chances on these super quick greens; managed to carry the bunkers on the left and land it just on the other side from 148 and ball rolled past about 15 feet finishing hole - #2 handicap hole on the course (why!?!?) Had a 190 yard carry over water into a quick green... again - you better be okay with getting the ball in the air and carrying hazards..nothing thin or fat; you're in serious trouble here. I faded it right and 2 putt to finish One last trip through the clubhouse; I guess Tom Watson did a pro day there... All in all it is a very nice course but you've certainly got to be comfortable with your game and know your distances. We played the white tees but surprisingly the blues weren't too far back and - on some holes - it would have been easier. They say "come be a member for a day" and they mean it... they treat you nice out here and make you feel special - from the range to the starter. cksurfdude, Philly Golf Guy, yungkory and 4 others 7 Quote Driver- Titleist TSR3 10* Woods- Cobra LTD 3w 15*, 5W 19* Irons- Titleist 718 AP2 (5i-50*) Wedges- Callaway Jaws Raw (54/58) Putter- Wilson Infinite Grant Park Ball- Maxfli Tour X Buggy- Motocaddy M7 GPS Remote Electric Caddy Bag- Motocaddy Dry-Series Proudly testing for 2024:

I hate blind shots, unless it's a course I have played a lot or I have someone with me that knows the aiming targets. Not much fun to hit a great shot to the wrong place. I have lost balls doing that. I've played six courses designed by Mike Strantz, and five of them were full of blind shots, visual deception and intimidation, and severely contoured greens. If you can read a course guide and trust your decisions, they're not exceptionally difficult, but they're definitely challenging. Personally, I enjoy them, and play Tobacco Road near Pinehurst semi-regularly. The exception is Strantz' first design, Caledonia Golf and Fish Club near Myrtle Beach, which is relatively traditional. cksurfdude, Rickp and Kenny B 3 Quote Irons Titleist T200, AMT Red stiff Rogue SubZero, GD YS-Six X T22 54 and 58 wedges 7-wood 5-wood B60 G5i putter Right handed Reston, Virginia

Popular Post revkev
I wanted to illustrate Tom Fozio's brilliance by showing back to back green complexes on the back nine of our course. Number 12 is a 370 yard par 4, sharp dogleg left with OB down that side. There isn't a bunker on the hole but the OB left makes it play much longer because it forces guys out to the right. Also the rough there is brutal. The green is long and narrow with steep drop offs right, left and back. I've watched lots of guys miss left and bat it back and forth a few times making double or seven with a penalty. Today I hit driver in the right rough leaving an extremely long approach but hit a great 5 hybrid on the back Fringe. I had 16 feet and lipped the birdie put out. Two feet left on my approach and I would have been in big trouble. Here is number 13 - a great short par 4 with lots of options. There is a lateral Hazzard all along the left side and a pond that guards the front, right side of the green and juts out into the fairway about 80 yards short of the green. There is a run up zone to the green between both Hazzard's if someone were crazy enough to think that he could hit a perfect 310 yard drive at sea level. There are four bunkers around the green which has three distinct sections complete with a false front on the front left. I hit 4 wood to 106 and GW to 15 feet. Lots of guys bail right here because of the Hazzard left. Big mistake! You have to carry the pond and the bunker from the rough. It's better to risk the Hazzard down the left side.
