2019 Official Forum Member Review-Srixon Z Star and Z Star XV Golf Balls

Recommended Posts

Played 18 holes today with the Z-Star (same ball for 17 holes). Hit a tree hard once and not a single scratch or scuff on it.

I do think that the XV might be better in the wind for me. I had trouble with too much spin and the Z-Star getting climbing and falling short on full shots from 130yds and in. Wind was blowing a consistent 18-20mph for the entire round.

The XV is extremely good in the wind -- it flies a bit higher than my preferred window with the driver but doesn't float in the wind. Into, down or across - it's just really solid.

Speaking of durability...I planned on a pic of a Z-Star Ive been playing but lost it on the 29th hole. That ball had been in couple bunkers, hit a couple tree trunks hard,  cart path, been thru every club in the bag, abused by my Vokeys, and not a mark on it. No surprise as Ive played these before and they are flat put durable! Most durable ball Ive played in the premium category and maybe any category. My normal ProV1 would had been replaced, especially after hitting a couple trees.

No surprises thus far in my playing both balls on the course amd I will elaborate in a different post another time.

I've been playing the Z-Star for years and considering a switch.  First test would be the XV, so I'm really curious what you guys think in this review!

I have no never played a Srixon ball (till now) but the XV is incredible. I have been really impressed with the durability, the right combination of feel and spin and it's really powerful flight. I would absolutely start with the XV and it may well end there!

108 Holes!!!!! That's looks better than my ProV1 after 5 holes. I'm switching!

I just don't know whether to go Z star or Z star XV?...........100mph driver and high 80's 6 iron, thoughts?

Forgot I played these a few years back. I need to catch up with this thread. Might have to add one to the head to head testing.

I agree. The ball really is good. I am looking forward to seeing if it is significantly better than the Kirkland 3-piece though. For my budget, that ball is going to be tough to beat.

I haven’t tried the XV but I have 2 dozen waiting to be tried once I finish the MTB-X testing. I’m 94 driver 82 6 iron and it seems the Z Star is about perfect for me but the MTB-X has opened my eyes to trying a little firmer ball.

I get that. I've never played the Kirkland - I haven't experimented much with golf balls (my wife says I'm a golf ball snob) - but the sale they just did was really good. The balls are already a bit cheaper than some of the other big brands ($39.99 per) and they were running a buy one get one free which was awesome.

I thought I would post a picture of an XV I have had in play for 90 holes. The #4 is the "used" ball; #1 has never been hit. The durability is amazing and better than any high-end ball I have used, although to be fair, I wouldn't normally keep a ball in play for that many holes due to concern over performance declines.

I have not played 90 holes with 1 ball but I have played 18 and I am seeing the same kind of Durability, with no performance drop off that I have seen.. Both the Z-star and the Z-star XV and showing the same durability for me..

So today I played the Z STAR and shot a PB of 61 - including a 6 under 29 on the back nine! I was playing at Lincoln Park West in OKC with a par of 71. I have previously shot a 62 last year at Lincoln Park East which has a par of 70 but today was two strokes better. The round started out with 4 pars, although I was hitting the ball well. The Z Star performed beautifully today, I only missed one green and I chipped in for birdie 🙂

Here are just a few pictures from the round:

A 4 iron from 191 yards uphill:

IMG_Jun242019at80656PM.jpg.fb7bc6db07a656d7d59aeb1ed0340296.jpg

This is an 88 yard 3/4 53:

An 8 iron from 137 into the breeze:

IMG_Jun242019at80842PM.jpg.ec4379ef3f11fc51f82147f81b09737b.jpg

A 3/4 8 iron from 139 on a par 3 into about 10 mph:

and here is the ball:

IMG_Jun242019at84010PM.jpg.e7bd0440313367a2646a18796c04229b.jpg

It was a great day. I hit full shots and partial shots and the Z Star handled everything. I like to hit knockdowns and little floaters and I was able to do that so well today. I have really like the XV to this point but the Z Star was fantastic today. Here is my card:

now you've played both the Z star and XV, and shot well with both, what's your overall impression, particularly re feel and around the green?

I wish I had my favorite by the time the sale was over. I would have jumped all over it, but I still have more testing to do...

Haha. I'm a plus handicap and I would look like an absolute hack on tour. I'm playing muni's on a day with no pressure from the blue tees. I'm not confused about where I stand in the grand scheme of things. That said, thanks for the kind words - I have never even sniffed a 29 before. Was a good day but I'll keep my day job

      Testers Wanted (10)
Fresh off it's stellar performance in the MyGolfSpy 2019 Golf Ball Buyers Guide (Read it Here) the newly released Snell MTB-X is taking the golf ball world by storm.  Within two days of the study the ball was sold out on Snell's website. So what's all the fuss about, can a $32 (Less if you buy in quantity) ball  really perform as well as some of the "Big Boy" balls?  Well that's what we want you to determine for yourself.
Ten members will be selected to receive, test and keep a dozen Snell MTB-X balls (your choice of White or Yellow) then report back on the forum your experience and thoughts of the ball

The new 2019 Snell MTB-X is a 3-piece tour ball designed for lower driver spin, higher ball speeds, reducing “ballooning” with irons and providing excellent feel around the greens.
