Would having less clubs in your bag, would it improve your game?

While at the range yesterday, as I was going thru the bag, I realized that in all fairness only use maybe 6 -7 clubs in my bag on a regular basis. I started to wonder if only having your must have clubs and would that improve your game. If you go thru a round at your club how often do you really use the whole bag?

For me I would probably drop down to the following:

Driver
3 Wood
4-Hybrid
6-PW Irons
56 / 60 Wedge
Putter

Would that be enough to get thru a round? would this help you or handicap you?

14 is the limit and there is no minimum. You could play the course with a 3 iron if you wanted. I prefer having a club for every gap and wedge versatility in grinds/loft. The only concern is are you not going to have the option to play a certain shot if you don't have the club you need. If you're shooting 59s with your current set up, then it doesn't matter how many clubs are in your bag.

I know that the limit is 14 and that there is no minimum, but the real question is, take your last 5 rounds,  have you really used all 14 clubs, or is it that you used one club one time for that one shot but never touched again.  Would it make your game better if you had your clubs that you used consistently and have dial in yardage, you know where you each one because you used those clubs 3-4 times in a round if not more.  Instead of that club that you hardly use and hope that you are going hit it perfectly that one time.

Golf is all about confidence and minimizing mistakes.. because lets be real, we are not professionals and we don't practice 8hr a day.

I thought of the first bag of clubs I had:

3 wood

3 iron, 5, iron, 7 iron, 9 iron, and putter.

I learned how to hit many different length shots with so few clubs. I was probably a better “feel” player back then for sure!!!

During my last round the clubs I used least were a 7 iron and 4wood. However, when I did they were a par 3 with the 7 iron and a tee shot to stay short of a bunker with the 4wood. I would agree and say take out clubs you won't hit - I don't carry a 3 iron, but overall if there is a yardage gap you can reach easier with a easy 5 iron instead of a step on the gas 6 iron, you probably should carry a 5 iron in that example. Taking advantage of a gapping session with a fitter may shed more light. Nice thought exercise OP

I could lose a few without missing them: I could lose my 3 or 4 iron, and probably my 6 or 7 and my 9: but I’ll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I give up my 5 wedges.

I cannot say I use every club extensively in every round.  But, over the course of two-three rounds, I have used each of my 14 clubs a good bit.

Interesting question. Over time I think it would improve your ability to improvise shots.  However, from a scoring perspective I can't see how you'd be better off carrying less clubs.

There is only a maximum on the number of clubs not a minimum. For me the 14 clubs provide good distance coverage and good gapping between clubs. If I reduced the number of clubs I would be creating gaps that would be too large to manage.

For golfers that don’t hit the ball a long way reducing the number of clubs would probably be beneficial and would create better gapping. No reason to have 14 clubs in the bag if they overlap or only have 5 yard distance gaps.

I played 2 very different courses this weekend and the top of my bag got a lot of use but not so much with my middle irons. However I often play shorter executive courses where it is the opposite. So it really depends on where I am playing.
