Arnold Palmer Invitational - 2022

Color me old school and nostalgic, but I'm a long time soldier in Arnie's Army, who loves seeing the most iconic umbrella in golf... if not the world! I miss Arnold Palmer, he was my childhood golfing hero 😢.  I remember rooting for him against that big old bad Nicklaus guy... funny the things that stick in one's mind.

How To Watch The 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational - Grounded Reason

The tour heads north to Orlando, FL and Bay Hill CC.  Back when this course opened (1961) it was in the middle of absolutely Nowhere, Florida. Designed by Dick Wilson and Bob Simmons, it was regarded by some as a "just what are you thinking" idea.  Most recently redesigned by Palmer in 2009, extending length to 7381 yards and repositioning many bunkers, it replaced the Florida Citrus Open in 1979 and is among a favorite tour stop.

Bryson is in the field and purportedly ready to defend his title.  I should be a fun event and I'm guessing we'll see another first time tour winner as we just did at the Honda Classic.  Don't forget to pick your player in the pool https://runmypools.com/JRMPNWWF.  Good luck!

Win at Arnie's Place extra special for Bryson DeChambeau

Just tuned in and heard the announcers talk about Adam Scott leaving his driver out of the bag at least for today for a 2 wood to avoid some of the trouble. Needless to say I turned it in right as he found the bunker lol

Didn't Phil recently do this same exchange?  I'll bet these guys don't give up all that much in distance and, if the distance loss is more than offset by FIR's, makes great sense for some players on certain courses.

I chose to sit Sergio and play Ortiz... so Sergio will probably win it 😆

No, I think this was more recent than the Phrankenwood experiment... but that was definitely interesting and typical Phil.

Yea, that was nuts. It was as if his brain and muscular-skeletal system had a mini-stroke 🤣.  I really like the way Bay Hill is testing these guys and their decision to leave the thick stuff around the greens.  No doubt some of the players absolutely hate not being able to use the Texas-wedge as they do on so many of the TPC tracks.

Anyone played into and putted on Stimpmeter = 14+ greens? 😬  Billy Horschel described today's condition as "like putting on a dance floor".  I have no idea what the typical conditions of the courses I play would compare but would guess half that.  Bay Hill is definitely making them work.

I'm pretty sure my club keeps ours between 10 or 11. I'll check once the greens get to normal. They are a little slow right now due to weeks or rain and being soft. They haven't implemented the regular mowing and rolling schedule yet.

Mid season they will keep you on your toes for sure.

I played the Walloon Lake Country club back in high school.  This was before I knew what I was doing really, but those green were the worst.  You couldn’t stop a ball on them.  A wedge would land and bound off the back.  It was like putting on cement.  Just terrible.

I found this article interesting.  A survey in 1978 of 581 courses found the average to be 6.5.  In 2016, another survey of metropolitan courses averaged 11. It describes the reason as a paradigm shift in "maintenance practices and grass varieties".  The Stimpmeter was invented in the 1930's but not adopted as a standard by the USGA until the 70's.  Speed being such an elixir to us homosapiens, is it a mere coincidence that green speeds started increasing about the same time?  And, like so many things, we have an innate need to test the limits... anyone else want to see them playing Stimpmeter = 20? 🙂

Not a great tournament, course or top tour participants, but at least there are lots of players in contention today - so it could be fun to watch. It's just not the same without the presence of Arnie himself...

Just watched the highlight of Matt Jones throwing his putter in the water in Saturday. Coincidentally enough I had a YouTube short clip come up from Scotty Cameron showing Matt Jones talk about his putter for a WITB edition.

money thing I noticed is the putter in the video is black and the one he tossed looked silver. Either way talk about bad timing for the promo lol

One of my favorites.  Even though the course is quite boring I like this one, and I like Scotty for the W.

Good job!!  Nice pick.

Congrats to Scheffler!  Lots of first time winners this year.  Hard to get a rivalry going.

When they let the rough grow, Bay Hill plays a little tougher than the -18 when Rory won.  Tough conditions, but everyone likes to see lots of birdies, so cut the rough!

The weather certainly contributed but I really liked the way this course and PGA National challenged the field... without the need to make the course longer.

He really has been.  I think his performance at the Ryder Cup really boosted his confidence.  I'm not as much surprised by him winning as Rory not being able to get it done.  It just speaks to the parity of the field - particularly the top 50.
