Golf tip: Finding the right feel for the swing

Golf takes you on a journey. Most golfers won't explore the vast amount of swing concepts that you can spend a lifetime studying. I believe that if you can find the right feel before you can't play anymore, you have fulfilled all that the game has to offer.

Most really great golfers find that feel and go with it for a long period. How do you find the right feel?

The greatest player of our time (Ben Hogan) said he dug it out of the dirt. That's right, he did not have a teacher, he found it by trial and error. Hogan played when the golf clubs had very little forgiveness. If he were to see some of these game improvement clubs today he would be miffed.

The one thing that the older generation of players had was a repetitive swing path.

This path was more like a circle. Think of a door opening and closing. The feel of swinging in a barrel. If you want to feel that, go out to the range and put three balls down on the ground.

The first ball will be the object ball or the ball your going to hit.

The second ball will be placed about a foot or so in front of the object ball and to the left of the line of flight.

The third ball will be placed a foot or so in front of the second ball and more left of the target line.

Now take a 5-iron and take a practice swing, feeling like you are going to hit the third ball. The club should swing around your body and stop above the third ball. The swing will be done without effort. Just swing the club through and along the path laid out by the balls on the ground.
