Golfspy_CG2 Driver Shootout

A month ago I was pretty intent on going into 2023 with 2 iron setups—-yes ONLY 2–Gasp and maybe adding 1 driver to my current 2 Drivers.   I know everyone is thinking my account has been hacked.  Ha. 
 

But alas what happens.  Launch season happens!  And I’m inundated with OEM press release and videos and every YT’er under the sun is putting out reviews.  And there I am looking at least at 3-4 drivers I HAVE to try.  And a push from fellow mod @GolfSpy_BOSMay have factored in as well

So for all those who wonder why companies spend so much in marketing.  Just read that previous paragraph again.  I’m such an easy mark.
Just  as a reminder. I ended the season with the TSR 2 in play after okaying the TSi1 most of the season.  Yes some others came and went. But they were in play 90% of my rounds. 
 

So what driver will be on the menu?  Well in no particular order   
PING G430-Dleivery expected this week

Callaway Paradym-Read My Fitting Post for Paradym

Titleist TSR1 -Currently on Order dlievery date TBD

Cobra Aero Jet -TBD

Wilson Dynapower  TBD

also likely but not confirmed yet

im not sure which one I’ll have in hand first  it’s likely to be the G430 but I’ll likely be demo’ing the Paradym next week, then placing the order

Well Rob, I for one am glad to see you are getting better.  Progress is often measured in small steps... or in your case sets.   Look forward to seeing which drivers you like.

But as the saying goes, if I’m being honest. I want the TSR1 to tske me to parts of the fairway I’ve never seen before.  BUT I migjt secretly be hoping for for a Paradym shift in my thinking.    Gosh…did I really just say that

It's exciting to see the new launch season and all the new clubs that are coming out. I can definitely relate to the temptation of wanting to try out new drivers, especially with all the press releases and reviews that are out there. I can understand why companies spend so much on marketing, it's hard to resist the pull of new and shiny equipment. I'm also curious to see which driver you end up choosing, I'm sure it will be fun to see how it performs on the course. Keep us updated on your journey and good luck with your demos!

I would love to say that I’m sure you’ll find one ya like more than others but I foresee several sitting in our office in a steady rotation of play

Glad to see you are doing this Rob. 

You've mentioned Sophies youtube reviews a few times the last few weeks and I believe when you do things like this (not joking) it really is for the good of the forum. Yes, we may joke around at the shear number of clubs you go through, but your experiences with them and how they perform and the stories behind your fittings as well as their on course appeal to your game is so relatable to many here on the forum. 

It will be great to see what comes out on top and what surprises are in store for you during this whole process. 

My vote is that Paradym wins out for you by a sliver over TSR1. At least that is what my gut says. Cobra in third, but you end up playing it the most during the testing period.

HMMM   I wonder if I influenced this in any way????

These are the two most likely to replace my driver.   I can't believe I am saying this but I really like the AeroJet.

Great question.  The last time I did it. It was mostly based on on course results over several rounds with each.  Based on combination of fairways or just missed fairways and distance.    I’ll throw up some pedestrian LM numbers just for reference.  But it comes down to which one do I feel most confident with on the tee for any given tee shot.

Ironically  no, but if there is smoke there may be fire.   Just a couple reviews I’ve seen on Aerojet and of course my past experiences with Titleist.   
 

i was surprised to hear the TSR1 did well for you.  If the restyled were similar across the rear of the MWT pool, Titleist may sell more of these than they planned.

I'm glad you're doing this, that way we can live vicariously through your experiences. While I enjoy watching videos on clubs, I put more stock in hearing about players experiences her on the forum. To be honest, I don't swing 120 mph and they don't relate to my game. It'll be fun to see which driver makes its way into your bag as a semi permanent fixture.

It just seemed to provide what I need from a driver....a little forgiveness and a little more spin.

Wilson is supposedly bringing a premium driver to market this spring.  So we’ll see what that is 

The 230Z from Mizuno says it’s improved over the 220 which said it was improved over the 200.  But I’ve yet to hear that on a wide spread basis.    
 

Also I love Mizuno habe the irons.  But I have to question its full commitment to drivers    We are a fitting account with them and have all the irons from MP to JPX   But they don’t even supply one driver head with it

Wilson drivers performed okay but were uninspiring. 

I think the Mizuno drivers are getting better and perform well.  For me they were very right side biased.

The new Gen 5 driver  0311  with an even flow shaf  R Flex is a great club.
the reviews on it were not that good but it has taken me a few places on my course I hadn’t seen.. all good , easy to shape..

That was a 2022 driver and I had it for a while. It was pretty good.   
 

Depending on how the shootout is going I may add the Gen6 to the mix when it is released.

For me most everything was a push.  I am pretty sure that Phillip made the same comment when we were discussion drivers on Thursday.  Other than that it performed well and might work better for you.

I have a sneaking suspicion that you've seen the new Wilson driver. I'm hoping to finally hit it when it comes out. But really surprised Mizuno isn't sending driver heads with the irons.

Was hoping a little more would come from the shield. Pulling for a good overall MW showing.  But sounds like it may be more of the same.
