When I got my only custom-fit Mizuno irons, I covered them for the first year. Couldn’t spend that much and beat them up unnecessarily.  I use them now when traveling .

I have a friend who uses iron headcovers. I can't tell you how many times we had to backtrack to find one he left on the course. He even dropped one between the golf bags on a cart and he had to take the bag off to get to it so he could protect his 5-year-old club. It doesn't always happen but when it does it's aggravating.

I get it if people want to protect a nice expensive set of forged irons. But if you’re putting covers on a set of 17-4 cast shovels then you have serious OCD issues.  I’ve played Pings most of my life, with a few years of some Mizuno forging a thrown in, and purchasing a set of iron covers has never crossed my mind.

I've used iron covers for most of my life, but usually just for transport. When I played with clients, before retiring, and in more upscale venues, I'll take them off when I open the bag but put them back on before loading them back in the car. Like tony@CIC, my irons look like new after year's. Recently I've started walking again and found that the clanking bothers me, mostly because I'm thinking about how nicked up they're getting. So, I changed from my Club Glove covers (pretty thick and very protective) to some low-cost thin neoprene that are less obtrusive and lighter weight (Hey, every ounce counts when you're carrying!!) and put them back on between shots. Honestly, I don't spend a lot of time doing that which is one of the criticisms of using covers. There's already way too many things players dink around with that slows everything down. After a shot, I grab my bag then wipe off the club and put the cover back on while walking.

If anyone wants to use iron covers, I certainly can understand and respect their choice.   Protecting the clubs and prolonging their value, definitely a good idea.

For me, I'd be dropping them, losing them, putting a wet, dirty club inside of them, putting the wrong cover on the wrong iron, etc.     I'm always dropping wood head covers, towels, ball markers, once and while a golf glove will disappear.   

That annoying guy who was to go back 2 holes to find a head cover, that is me.

I don't use iron headcovers, Chris Trott once said "irons are tools, not jewels" which is why I don't care to use them. With that being said, if someone does use them I'm not going to give them crap for using them. It's their choice to use them as is mine to not use them. Couldn't care less if someone I know or was golfing with used them.

Yep, but the head cover isn't the issue, it's awareness and organization. I know-I know, lots of people don't want to have to think about anything when they're trying to concentrate on golf... and I get that. Those absolutely should try to eliminate extraneous things from their thought process; we ALL appreciate that, especially when they won't give up on a $1 item they dropped 2 holes back! When I first joined my league, one of the guys was telling me a story about constantly forgetting/losing something nearly every time he plays (he doesn't use covers). Before he finished the sentence, the ranger walked into the club house and asked if anyone lost a cell phone; yep, it was his!

I hated caddying for people (in the 60s) that had them, the old leather ones always fell off.

I use the club glove covers, too. I have the standard size and notice a couple rips after about a year. The stitching is starting to loosen on some of them, too. I'll have to look for the oversize ones.

i have a beautiful shiny set of mint condition Mizuno MP54 and I know those are a softer iron and couldn't bear to hear these things clacking into each other so I got covers - but just for the odd number irons. I want to see the reflections off of some of that gorgeous shiny chrome; I have a 4 way top and use the hc between the other irons. seems to have worked well.

read an article a while back about Sahith Theegala and they asked him about using covers on his irons and if I recall correctly he described how his dad worked long and hard to get him his set of clubs and he wanted to do everything he could to keep them in perfect condition.

i make no judgements on the course - not on what people play, their bag makeup, covers/no covers - typically I don't even notice.

I play Miura CB 57 irons.  I don’t mind normal wear/nicks from striking the ball or the inevitable stone.  I hate the clatter. From clubs clanging against each other.  I use a Khama golf bag. Club heads  rest in rubber holders and can’t bang against each other. Also organizes my bad so I can never leave a wedge behind on the edge of the green. LOL

Here's my suggestion. As an alternative to iron covers how about a golf bag that holds you irons in place so they never touch each other?

I bought a "NevrLooz" bag a couple years ago and I still love it.

No more clacking sounds, I'm never looking for a club cause it's always in the same spot, and I never leave a club behind.

I am most definitely on the other side with this one.  If my irons ever start making too much noise, I put my hand/forearm over them to dampen the noise and keep them from rattling.  Alternatively I can use my other carry bag with 14 dividers which also eliminates the rattle.  You cover your putter to keep the face from getting pitch marks or divots that would impact roll, not the same with irons.  Also I guess if you don’t walk a golf cart could/would agitate the clubs more.  Either way growing up walking to play in steel spikes across asphalt to get my persimmon woods and VIP blades….those are sounds that remind me of golf

Considering what clubs cost these days, you cannot protect them enough.  I'm a week into a set of Mizuno 923 irons and have covers for all of them.  Yeah, I got some ribbing from my buds, but their clubs came over with Columbus, and look it.  Take care of those puppies.

hey, man your not alone, I feel the same and also, we aren't tour players that's just given irons and anything they need all the time, we work hard for what we have and if we want to protect them from a couple dings then so be it. One thing I like about head covers is that they really do help me find my iron a lot quicker than when I use to not use iron covers.

Its a habit thing you take it off put it in the same place ever time. For me its on top of my scorecard its there every single time

i use a wet towel between each stroke so the grooves are clean and face has no dirt or grass on them and back goes on the head cover

Grew up in a traditional blue collar family, dad was a machinist and mom a housewife. Modest income, learned to take care of what I had. Using iron covers keeps my clubs looking good, and helps me make sure I don’t leave a club on a green. Extra iron cover means missing club.

Have to agree with several of the previous posters...with the cost of clubs these days, I want to do what I can to make them last. Secondly, I like to refresh clubs when it is necessary and the better my current set looks, the better the resale value which offsets the cost of the next set. Finally, I too clean my club faces after every shot. Not only to preserve the clubface but also because a clean clubface means consistent performance. My final comment (guaranteed to get some reaction  ), why do people who don't like headcovers care so much about golfers who do?

I don't understand why iron head covers seem to bother some folks.  Seems to come up as a joke on every other golf podcast you listen to.  It's a total personal preference, and I don't really see the difference between having them on your woods vs your irons. I don't use them on my irons, but I prefer the sound of the irons clanking and the look of my irons over the looks of a head cover.  I use them on my woods and putter but that's partly because I think most wood and putter covers are designed really well and look good.

The ONLY comment complaint I take seriously about iron covers relates to holding moisture.

I use them because I want my vintage muscleback heads to last.

I use them simply because they keep my clubs in better shape, helps to ensure I grab the correct club and don't leave anything behind when I return to my cart.

Go to a high-end course sometime and play with a caddy.  If they are experienced what is the first thing they do?  Take off all head covers except the driver and 3 wood and off you go.   

Irons were designed to clank together in your bag.  They can take the beating even.  I don't trade clubs in until they are shot so I don't care about cosmetics and thus no iron covers.

I don't use them but I have no issues with anyone that does. Irons are expensive and most of us don't have unlimited funds or get them free. So if you want to use iron protectors I understand 100%. If i get a new set soon, I'll probably get some too!

absolutely use them on all clubs. I've seen relative new forged clubs beat to death in a bag. It sounds cool hearing the rattle, however the needless damage IS avoidable.  Money comes very hard for many, so wanting to keep clubs as new as possible isn't wrong.

I'll also add that although I own them and use them, I don't love putting them on and taking them off. 90% of the time they come off at my car and go back on before the clubs go in the trunk. The other 10% I'm probably riding a cart and running late, I'll put the bag on the cart with all the covers on and by the end of the round they are all in a side pocket or in the basket behind the cart seat.

I am a fan of iron covers. Especially when it comes to the storage and transportation of clubs. A good set of clubs is a substantial investment, why not protect them the best you can. Protecting my clubs out weights the ribbing I get from some of my buddies for using iron covers.

Im not that old but i use them. Yes a couple buddies crack jokes but my expensive equipment will stay in great condition. And the noise canceling is a bonus too. Lol
