How many irons do I carry?

Recommended Posts

5-gw set irons. Cleveland 52,56, and 60 sand wedges. I only carry the 60 in the summer though. Driver, 3 wood, and 4 hybrid + putter to round out the bag. When I get new wedges probably go 54, and 58

I use a total of 10 irons in the bag counting wedges. 4 - G and then a 54 & 58 degree wedge.

Also carry driver, 3 wood, and 19 degree utility.

I prefer long irons versus hybrids, the irons are easier for me to use on a much more consistent basis than the hybrids.

Glad to read I'm not the only one who doesn't use the top long irons... goodness knows I've tried and tried.   😆

Thinking about adding a 26 degree hybrid to the bag. If I do, I'll drop either the GW (I don't use it much) or the 5 iron.  Just finding I hit my hybrids more consistently than my long ions.  Maybe an age thing?

I HAVE more irons (and other clubs) than I actually CARRY.

Most of the time it's 6 iron through GW; 4 and 5 hybrids; a 5/7 adjustable fairway; driver, all in (very) senior flex.

Often I will note that I actually use fewer irons than I carry. But, as said, I have enough for most of the dragons, bears and other wildlife I'm likely to encounter in my adventures.

Best, -Marv

I have 6 - PW 50 54 58 degree wedges. I also have my Driver and a 2, 3, and 4 hybrid and of course my putter. I don't carry the 3, 5, or 7 wood any more as I can pound the hybrids just about as far with a lot more accuracy.

Though I do miss my 7 wood. Nothing in my bag can punch a hole in the sky Mr. 7 wood. But I use the alignment sticks that sit in that slot way more often than the 7 so it sits in an old bag in the garage.

I carry five irons.....6-pw.....I have the 5 iron to my set, but haven't bothered to shaft it up yet (maybe a winter project...?).   I carry a #5 hybrid that fills the distance gap between the 6 iron and the 9 wood, which is my next strongest club.   At age 78, I'm learning that the hybrids or lofted woods are much easier to hit more consistently than the longer irons.

As far as wedges, I carry three more.....a 49* gap, a 54* and a 58* which I use out of the sand.

I just started playing golf in September. My budget was pretty low, so I bought a Ram starter set that included 6-PW, a driver, a 3 wood, a 4 hybrid, and a putter. I picked up a SW from a thrift store. I assume it is 56 degree, but I’m not 100% sure.

Welcome to golf! And welcome to the MGS forum from another Alabamian!

I had a similar bag make up as you until I went for a Driver and Fairway fitting a year ago. The Ping fitter left my Driver (G425 Max 10.5 R, std lie) and replaced my 5 wood, 3 hybrid and 4 iron with a 3 wood (G425 SFT R @17.5, flat lie) and a 7 wood (G425 Max R @ 21.5, flat lie). My irons are now 5 to Gap plus 54 and 58 wedges. According to Trackman I have no gaps with this set up, so I only carry 13 clubs now. My scoring has improved with the new set.
Interestingly, the new clubs did not increase my distance all that much, but I hit them much higher. This past summer I was fit for new irons and replaced my Ping i500’s with i230’s which, as with the woods, I don’t hit that much longer, but a lot higher.

Ping i230- 5 to U

Stating what irons are in the bag is meaningless unless the lofts are included.  Someone's 6i is likely the same loft as my 4i, and my 6i is the same as their 8i.  But if all that is asked how many irons I carry, then I carry 7 irons.

10 irons - 4i thru LW

3 "woods" - D, 4W, 7W

1 putter

I think it's amusing wedges are not irons to some...YMMV

I don't get to use my 7W or LW very often, but if we're allowed 14 clubs, might as well have as many options as possible.

10 counting the wedges.....

  • 3 iron Ping iCrossover
  • 5-PW Srixons
  • 50, 54, 58 Cleveland Zipcores

I have had a couple flings with hybrids that last a couple shots so I gave up on that fiasco finally.  I also have a 4 DI from sub70 that works nicely, but I hit the 5 iron so well I needed the additional length from the 3i which i also cranked down a degree on the adjustable hosel.   I round out the top with the 5W, 3W and of course Driver.

I carry 4-9 iron. I start my Vokeys at 48, I find better control and dispersion this way. No hybrids, into a 5 wood after the 4 iron

I vary my irons from 4,5,6,7,8,9,PW,Gap, PLUS 54, 58 wedges-and usually delete the 4 iron in favor of a hybrid depending upon conditions...I live in MI and play during shoulder seasons can get cold, wet and windy and I just feel more comfortable with the hybrid replacing the 4 iron. Mid-summer-I drop the hybrid and bring along the 4 iron.

It’s 4-irons (6-7-8-9) … 4-wedges (Pw/42, Aw/47, 50’ & 54’). Need/want to address the distance/gapping issues which have developed with fairway & hybrids ….
