Anyone else struggling with cracked driver faces?

Recommended Posts

I’m wondering if anyone else has this problem? Over the last 6 years I’ve cracked the face on 4 clubs. 2 drivers and 2 3-woods. Taylormade M1 driver, M6 3 wood and M2 3 wood. I swore I would never buy another taylormade and then sure enough the worst one yet is my Cobra LTDX LS driver.
I’m a higher swing swing speed player, able to get up to 125mph but generally play between 110-115. Is this just the cost of doing business at those higher swing speeds or am I an outlier?

I've been in the same boat (specifically with the Taylormade lines) and have mostly chalked it up to high swing speed. Thankfully TM tends to be pretty understanding with these types of issues and cracks in the face have fallen under warranty for me. In a more general sense, I tend to sit right around 115-120 and have been told that cracks are simply more likely with these speeds. I have often been curious as to whether it is a manufacturer-based issue or if it is true across the board. Would be difficult to test but definitely intriguing to see the data across different brands.

I'm in the 105-108 camp and never had the issue minus an older Callaway that cracked on the upper crown which was odd. But again older club.

I don’t recall ever cracking the face of any driver that I’ve owned, but I have cracked the face and/or crown on two fairway woods in the last 4-5 years. One was a Callaway Epic Flash 7-wood with a carbon crown that I repaired with high-impact epoxy and played for close to 2 years after the repair, but it recently cracked again. The other was an older Tour Edge Exotics 3-wood which actually separated at the seam that connects the face to the crown (this was about 5 years ago and the 3-wood was already at least 7-8 years old at the time.

I cracked my taylor made driver with the carbon face. Guy at the pro shop told me the carbon face is great unless you miss hit it with any higher end speeds. I had a few too many topline strikes and it caused the face to fail. Went back to my Calloway Mavrick ive been fine since.

Been playing for about 2 years in total. Winter breaks and a 6month period when I got sick. Starting to feel like myself again and recently played a “okay” round.
I currently have custom fit Cobra LTDx irons/wedges, a Vokey 60(cause my short game has been the best part of my game, and a Maverick 9 deg. Driver. Driving is the worst part of my game so My 4 iron usually takes alot of the long game abuse.

How old were the clubs when they cracked. Yes higher swing speeds can lead to more cracking. It why callway makes thicker faces for the tour heads

I cracked the m1 first year and had it replaced, then both 3 woods were 2.5 years old neither of them replaced. The cobra was just under 2 years but found out cobra only warranty’s one year.

Most manufactures only warranty at 1 or 2 years usually from manufacturers date.

Faces thin over time from use and get hotter. So the time plus the speed can contribute to the cracking.

I’ve seen others report issues with different heads on other forums but it’s not something I recall happening a lot with the brands you mention

The driver's of these days are built to be right at the legal limits of speed, when sold and would get faster the more they are used. This thining the faces making cracks more likely to happen especially with higher swing/ball speeds. That's why some pro's will have 2 driver heads in rotation. So, if one cracks they still have there other one.

Nope.  Unless I back over my golf bag, my driver is pretty safe. 😆

Cracked my sim 2 ti 3 wood face. I contacted Taylormade and they sent me a replacement head for free. They actually upgraded me to a stealth plus!! It’s worth contacting the manufacturer, they didn’t ask any questions on warranty or proof besides pictures of the head

I've never cracked a face, but I have cracked the crown.  Made the weirdest sound I had ever heard the first time it happened.  Always seems to happen just after warranty has ended.

Honestly, the fear of a cracked face has kept me from looking at TM drivers lately.  I just don't trust the carbon face for some reason.
