sparnar
Have been looking forward to the first Rory-Tiger ad since first hearing of Rory's move, and this sure didn't disappoint. Love it! Did they give Tiger the one-up with the ball in Rory's cup? From what I have gathered from some pieces here and there, and some soundbites, Tiger and Rory do give each other a bit of stick (especially along the old man vs real hair lines). Great to see that it made it into the commercial, and equally great to know that while I am sure it was scripted, at least some of it came from the players, and not just some guy writing scripts. Great ad. Looking forward to more of them. SPY VIP Tony Covey MGS Posted January 16, 2013 SPY VIP Share Posted January 16, 2013 Alright everybody, let's think this through a little more. I think we're all in agreement that this is a great ad. I'd probably go so far as to say it's the best golf commercial we've ever seen from Nike - and yeah...comparisons to the Jordan vs. Bird McDonald's spot, and perhaps even Nike's epic "Bo Knows" campaign are fair. It's not a huge leap to suggest this may be the single best commercial we've ever seen from a golf company. Can we agree that both Rory and Tiger come off likable? Can we agree this can only help perceptions of Nike golf? But... Does any of it make you want to run out and try/buy a Nike driver, irons, or even the golf ball. Granted...interest is fairly high in the Covert anyway, but beyond that, does it really make you want to fill your bag with Nike? What I think we're seeing is round 1 of what's going to be a long battle towards becoming the #1 Company in Golf. If I'm Nike and I'm waging an ad war, the logical step 1 for me is to improve perceptions of the brand. That means introducing Rory as one of your guys, and it means trying to find a way to make Tiger come across as likable. When you're not winning, you have to be likable if you're going to be relied on to sell equipment. My guess is that product will be featured more predominantly in future ads. I expect Nike will continue to keep it light and entertaining, and may even avoid performance claims outright. What Nike Golf President Cindy Davis expressed to Canadian Writer Rob Johnson (http://canadiangolfer.com/g4g/) is that we've reached a point where there is an entire generation of golfers for whom Nike has been a constant fixture. For those guys, Nike isn't a new player on the scene; they've always been there. The point is that the notion of Nike as a company that simply bought its way into the industry is fading, and with that comes an opportunity to reach golfers like they haven't been able to before. With every passing day, perceptions that Nike isn't a golf company fade more and more. What I expect is that Nike is going to leverage its experience in other sports, and sell golf (equipment) in ways we've never really seen before. There's never been a golf campaign that resonated the same way that Jordan/Bird/Bo dynamic did. I wouldn't be shocked if a single well-executed ad campaign could completely change the momentum in Nike's favor. Apart from a dollars and cents advantage, and their long history of success with this sort of thing, what Nike has that NOBODY in the industry can compete with is the two most marketable athletes in all of golf. Who are #3 and #4? Doesn't matter...neither, whoever he may be, is not anywhere near the level of Rory or Tiger from a marketing perspective. As long as Nike has both on their roster, they should win every ad war. MyGolfSpy is only major golf site that refuses advertising from large golf companies. As long as Nike has both on their roster, they should win every ad war. This ad does exactly as intended, to make people like Nike. It boosts not just golf clubs, but apparel, which is where Nike gets the big bucks. Once Rory wins with the Covert though, then you'll see a more explicit ad. In the meantime, Rory has never won with Nike clubs, so saying that Nike clubs are great because they have Rory would be a bit dumb. In fact, I think that's the point of the, "you'll learn" line from Tiger is to show Rory will get better under Nike. @GolfSpy_WD
RoverRick
It is not just the ads that are helping Nike, it is their tour staff. From 1999 to 2004, the only winner on any tour was Tiger, to speak of. 51 out of 56 times that a Nike player hoisted a trophy during those years it was Tiger. (according to my count on the Nike web site.) I would say that from 1999 to 2009 I thought of Nike as Tiger's clubs. I did not want to play Nike because, while all golfers are "Tiger-wannabes" I did not want to be perceived as one. Since then there was a spattering of other winners, Patterson, Casey, Schwartzel, Wie, Petterson. Then some rookies that my or may not have panned out. Kim comes to mind. But last year and this year they have made a major push. Watney, Stanley, Noh, and the rookie Henley and now Rory. IMHO Nike has moved out of the Tiger era into the "_______" era. I do not think of them as Tiger's clubs anymore. I still do not own any but I did look hard at the VR line. I bought two clubs but never hit them. I got injured and sold them before I had a chance to play them. As long as Nike has both on their roster, they should win every ad war. Ads have different purposes - and although the ultimate goal of it all is to sell more stuff, ads like this seem to be aimed at brand-building. I think Rick is correct in that Nike golf has been closely associated with Tiger, and that adding more golfers to the stable - especially golfers who win - will go a long way towards changing that mindset. Nike is a huge conglomerate, and nothing's too minor for them to hang the swoosh on. It all builds brand. Now you have the two best golfers in the world being shown as buddies having a ball on the driving range. Looks like they're trying to bring back the "nice" Tiger as the type of guy you can root for, and Rory, of course, is the new "best." A series of Tiger-Rory "buddy" commercials? Maybe they'll be the new Hope and Crosby (alright, I'm showing my age!). Or remember Arnie and OJ in the old Avis commercials? But you're right - a single ad won't sell many clubs, but the entire campaign - and we know there's a campaign coming - will aid what you wrote of a while back - Nike wants to be #1 in everything!
