Aw heck he is just getting old and senile like Jack Nicklaus. I was a Jack fan but now when he talks he usually gets on my nerves especially when he constantly repeats about cutting back on ball distances

Just a couple of questions.

 

1. How is what he said "PC." Doesn't sound like he's advocating tiger win solely based on race.

 

2. What's wrong with wanting to diversify the game? Getting kids in situations you and I have no experience in and can't really fathom saying, "heck that guy looks just like me and he can achieve all these things, so can i."

I'm not a big fan. I think he's one of the most under rated players of all time but I'm not crazy about much of what he says.

 

Having said that he is concerned about growing the game.

Quite frankly I'm tired of hearing about "grow the game". Golf isn't going away other than in places it needs to go away. In my opinion it "grew" too much. Too many courses were built that are way too long and tricked out and were over-priced for the average player. The people that want to grow the game more are the CEO's and major stock holders of equipment companies and the USGA, PGA, etc. Their salaries and benefits demand growth. They're not concerned about the core golfer like most of us here. If the USGA really wants to grow the game let's see them start buying up all the distressed or closed courses around the country and then run them. Only charge a green fee of $10 so "everyone" can come play. I don't recall hearing any desperate calls to grow fishing, or bowling, or NASCAR or polo. If you want to participate in a sport of some kind get after it. If you find the sport is too hard for your abilities or too expensive for you then find another one.

Plaid-Jacket, well said, the game will grow itself when it needs to. The Tiger Woods era had everyone opening courses and companies trying to ride the big boom, but it's shrinking back to size and a normal growth.

 

Let's take care of golfer first and then try and bring new demogrpahics into the game.

Having a young, brash, ethnic champion did wonders for the game. It made golf cool for the youth to play.

Lol. As much as what Gary Player says tends to make me cringe, I also tend to err on the side of diplomacy and not forget that he won all 4 majors before Jack, Arnie and Tiger, grew up knowing apartheid  , so probably deserves a little bit of slack when it comes to making blanket statements about golf and race. The PC brigade have the luxury of finding whatever they perceive as offensive or discriminating - just as much as Gary Player has the right to speak his mind. I believe at least he's earned it.

While I agree that the game is in a corrective period from the Tiger boom I think it's also dangerous to assume that everything is hunky dory. Player aside golf continues to have issues that need to be addressed. Don't think "it" what ever it is can't happen. Things change very quickly in today's world, there could be an over correct, too many course close and prices go through the roof, suddenly golf is dead.

 

There is no getting around the perception that golf takes too long, is too expensive and is a bit snooty. None of those things need be true.
