So who is still messing with their swing, and who will never change?

As I'm now completing my first year of returning to the game, I find I'm still trying to find a "swing". So almost daily I'm fiddling with a little this or that.

I'm currently working on more wrist break at the top of the swing so the club can get level, rather than being almost straight up.

But, I'll probably change that next week. I also strengthened up my grip lately to help with the leaks to right field.

It would be nice to know what I'm going to do everytime I address the ball, but unfortunately, I don't....

Well I have tinkered with mine over the last couple of weeks. I found out that I had lost power due to short swinging. I did not honestly know that I had gotten that short. Like you stated I had just been pulling the club up with almost no wrist cock. Also my posture was partly to blame because I had gotten to the position that made me flat as heck. My dad was my teacher to a certain point and the year before he died he wrote me a notebook just pertaining to my swing. One of his key points for me was posture at address. It took years to figure out the things he wrote but I guess as I got older it made perfectly good sense. When I get off I study his book and go back to his basics and it usually works. But his book only works for me and after I read Mr Penick's Little Red Book it really made sense the part that he instructed different for Crenshaw and Kite. I had gotten slack on my flexibility exercises and I had to exercise to get the club in the position that he wanted at the top. I have not really been a student of the mechanics of the golf swing until 2 years ago after I became somewhat "educated" his book made perfectly good sense for my swing anyhow. I could get away with a bunch of mess because I had an exceptional short game but now that I am getting older and don't play and practice as much I cant get away with as much crap. Sorry to ramble but my advice to you is get back to YOUR basics and go from there good luck

I finally stopped messing with my swing in 2013 about a month ago when the weather got cold enough that I stopped playing for the year. I do finally have a bag that fits me and I am confident with so I am hoping to stop messing with my swing next year and start scoring a little better.

At this point, my swing mechanics are pretty well set, now it is just reps to ingrain the mechanics and continue to work with my instructor to ensure that I don't develop bad habits while getting the reps in place.

Same here, I'm very close to a rocking swing, but I need to somehow get it ingrained.

But I'll probably have some new revelation next week that throws a new wrench into the mix.

Same with my putting, I've been using the claw lately, because my distance is much better with that, but I don't want to use it forever... It just works better...

This may be a question for a separate topic but I think it fits here.

While you are messing with your swing, do you have different swings for different clubs? (woods vs iron vs wedges)

I swing stupid hard with my driver and 3 wood. I have started having a more controlled swing with my irons and wedges. When you are messing with your swing, does your swing changes go across the board to all clubs or are you trying to tweak a swing for each shot type?

I am constantly tinkering with my swing, but there are fundamentals in my swing that I never change.  I spend my winters working in grip, posture and tempo for the most part.  I am always working on getting a good release and hitting down the target line which I always struggle with even when I am playing well.

I have a fundamental swing that i work on continuously to ingrain the good swings.  Usually if something goes wrong in my swing it is across the board so i have to work on every club.  For me it is important to have drills to fall back on that i can practice that help me find my swing when it goes in hiding.  The only thing i tweak is my short game to add new and different shots to my game.

Tinkered a bit in the golf room for most of the winter and took it to the range yesterday where I was very satisfied with the results. Working on weakening my grip towards more neutral. Still feels weird on the take away but the contact is pure. Just have to trust it on course which is the hardest part

After incorporating a leg move that simultaneously limits my backswing to a more normal rotation and effectively transfers my weight, I feel ready for the season. My only practice concerns now are to enforce tempo and alignment.

I hope to not tinker with my swing or equipment at all in the very near future. I am working very hard to once and for all complete my bag and learn once again to trust and swing my swing so I can get back to truly enjoying this game.

I find it hard to believe of any weren't messing with their swing some. We all have mechanics that work for us and we all struggle with them periodically.

If you mean major changes that ship sailed a long time ago for me. I can live with what I have.

Irons: Ping G430  7-PW, 45, 50 Alta CB black 65 soft R flex

Wedges:  Ping 195 S54, E58

Wedges and irons are - 1/2” and one degree flat

Putter: Sacks Parente Duke 32.5”

Ball: Titleist Pro VI or Callaway Chrome Soft X ls

While not at the same time I was fit for every club in my bag as well as the Pro VI ball. I use the chrome soft x ls on my league course.  It has much softer softer greens than the club that I belong to.

I’m on a mission to shoot my age - lifetime lowest round is 66 and I’m currently 67.

Well, I am at the end of a season long rework of my swing mechanics (that ended with a second coach and a reversion to a swing much closer to my natural swing instead of a more 'textbook' swing).  Now it is just repeat, repeat, repeat, evaluate, repeat, repeat, repeat.

Speaking of Rookie, are you playing tomorrow?  I'm considering trying to get out in the afternoon.  Not sure where yet though.

I'll be spending the next few months practicing indoors & I'm sure there will be "tinkering" involved

That said, I ended the season pretty pleased overall, so I hope to work more on consistency than any kind of "major" changes.

I used my tinkering to refine I guess. Like yesterday I went to the range with the thought of using a longer backswing, but repeatedly proved to myself that what I'm doing now is better. It's like I want a John daily swing, but I have a Steve stricker swing by default.

My points of interest are "the move", and keeping the swing headed in the right direction. Getting the weight transfer to match the ball contact is my main focus to get the pure hit, then getting it to go in the right direction helps a bit too.

Good question Sluggo. When I went for my first lesson some 35 years ago the Pro said "it will take a year or so to find your swing". Well I am still searching for it!! I think the day you stop trying to improve is the day you have given up on golf!!

Putting grip - I have tried them all and there were some very contrived ones!! The last 5 years I have reverted to my normal grip that I hit ALL my clubs with (Harry Vardon) and today I am a better player for it and am regarded one of the better putters.

Thanks for an interesting post.

Sluggo, I have just seen your bag and I am curious as to why u have not gone for the MC03 putter which came out tops in the recent MSG test?

Hi dropking,

Interesting that you asked. It made me go and re-read the "most wanted blade putter of 2013"

It was the MC-01 that was the winner, and I blindly put it on my Christmas list just because it won. It's the same reason I bag a i20 driver. It won best driver of 2012 I believe.

After using both, I see why they won. The driver is a beast, and even though I've only used the putter for 3 rounds now, I already totally love it.

It's actually how I stumbled across this great site. I was ready to buy a new driver but had no idea after a ten- year layoff. I searched numerous sites for reviews, but found MGS's reviews to be the most substantial and impartial. Then I started reading the forums, made a few posts, and then got addicted.

I've been struggling with putting for the last few months and decided maybe a new putter would help me make the mental jump back to decent putting. I had read the blade putter story a while back and took a leap of faith the the MGS's conclusion was sound, just like it was for my driver. So far, once again, I've been rewarded by following their advice.

I work real hard on my swing.,,but with the last 2 big snow storms in a week has caused me to wait until spring to pursue more changes. One thing I learned, and for u guys to try.. Film your swing on the course vs range...and huge difference.. My course swing is steep..but I score with it..range swing is on plane.. Bizarre I know.. Honestly when it comes to scoring, your natural instincts will be to get the ball in the hole at all costs. I guess when I think score,,,mr steep is my friend...lol

Try filming on course and compare to range.. You might be very surprised
