Stopped by MGS to do some most wanted testing;  got to try some of the 2019 models.  Really nice stuff and every time I see the new putters,  I want to wait for them to come out.

They are all nice. Had the opportunity to put with them last week. The one with the ball offset is interesting as well as it’s counterpart (shown in the bag picture; has all the sight lines). Glad I got to have Guerin explain the intent and what it is designed to do; otherwise I would have had the same reaction as on the other forum.

This is part of the reason I haven’t bought one, better stuff comes out each year. Probably going to end up with the 8.3.

The 8.3 is absolutely gorgeous.  Would probably be the one model I'd look into actually purchasing.

If you can, I'd really be interested in hearing your summary of his explanation of that offset putter.

I didn’t post much after I saw the putters because I didn’t want to say anything I shouldn’t. After seeing the pictures on another forum I think it is okay to talk about them a little. Hopefully I explain this correctly and it isn’t just my incorrect recollection

There are two models of the big offset slant neck. One was cast and had more offset and was partially considered a training aid, the other a milled version with a little less offset.

When setting up to the ball you align the back of the ball with the front of the shaft which will position the putter face about 2 inches behind the ball. This helps shorten the backswing, improve the forward swing, and help get the putter square to the target line at impact. Ultimately teaching a better overall stroke (shorter backswing, longer follow through) Wasn’t that hard to get used to and I did roll the ball well. I think it is largely about perception and how you responding to what you are seeing. You just seem to hold the putter square to the path for a bit longer.

When he was helping me with my stroke one of the drills he had me do was setup to the ball and move the putter back about an inch behind the ball, sort of simulating what this putter does but this putter has the shaft in your “normal” setup without impacting ball position or shaft angle. Another was to have the sightline on my putter pass over a spot immediately in front of the ball, to keep the face moving down the target line for a split second longer.

Hope that makes sense and is accurate

That makes a lot of sense. Really gratefully for the explanation.

I would speculate that having that much offset would also encourage an upward angle of attack on the ball. With that much offset, it would seem very hard to allow the hands to pass the ball and continue moving downward into impact. Does that make sense?

Not sure I agree with angle of attack aspect. Ball position and stroke will influence that more than offset. Ball back in stance will generally be more descending and forward will be more ascending. What you are taking about us more about loft. Hands forward decrease loft and hands back add loft. This can be influence by setup and eye dominance as well.

We talked about how right eyed dominant players have a tendency to point the shaft right and add loft and left eye dominant tend to lean the shaft forward and deloft. Deloft may make you hit the ball into the ground because you don’t have enough loft to lift the ball out of its depression.

All part of the stroke dynamics of a player and why knowing these particulars helps you find the right putter.

fozcycle How does your evnroll compare to your method drone?

I like the smoothness of the Method Drone better. I have had issues with the Evnroll ever since the shaft was bent by Dick’s. I just can’t get comfortable when I’m over the ball. The shaft leans too much off center.

Well it's now been over 2 years and the ER2 is still firmly in the bag. Prior to the ER2 I was switching putters all of the time, mainly because I never had one that really differentiated itself.

That all changed with the ER2 and it has been in my bag for 2 straight years and is not going anywhere anytime soon.

I agree. I have have mine for two years nd I can’t imagine switching. Not only do I get a lot of “oh’s and ash’s” or “I love your putter”but it is the best damn putter I have touched. I’m not an exceptional putter if the ball but I am convinced this helps me and I sink more putts because of it.
Added bonus, when I visited MGS they gave me a super pimp putter cover for it.

Two years for me also and the ER5 is like an old friend. I can’t even tell you where my other putters are right now - I know that I have four others including one that was in the bag for 10 years.

Do y’all remember the issues I had with m6 Evnroll putter last Spring as I had the grip replaced and the tech bent my shaft? Well, I finally decided that I could not putt with it and sent it to Evnroll to reshaft. The6 should get it tomorrow so I’ll be sure and post the actions and results.
