Welcome to all! I am so happy to see so many Chicagolanders (and leftys!) have joined in 2023. Looks like @Byrnzee and @Play18 are the closest to me geographically out in the far west burbs. I owe you both a drink if I run into on the greens in the spring!

Hello,

My name is Dan, I'm from Mankato, MN and am excited to get involved with this forum.  I have been playing golf since I was a little kid (approximately 25 years).  I have always been a casual golfer but most recently have been taking the game more seriously.  I have no established handicap but am looking forward to establishing one during this 2024 season.  There's lots to love about the game of golf, but most importantly I appreciate that it is a game you can play against others, but also yourself.  We've all lived through the trials and tribulations of improving our own scores and that is ultimately what always brings me back for more.  I come to MyGolfSpy in an attempt to grow my knowledge of the game while finding opportunities to network with other players.  This is a completely new community for me.  I am proud to be from Minnesota and love the diversity in courses that our state has to offer.  I primarily golf at North Links in Mankato, MN but also recently became a member of Minnesota's Public Country Club which has created exposure to many additional courses throughout the state.  If you are from Minnesota, I highly recommend enrolling!  Unfortunately we have finally reached the offseason for our outdoor season after a very mild start to our winter.  Minnesota winters are definitely the worst thing about golf in our region.  If I am not golfing, I'm spending as much time as I can with my family and I also work as an Emergency Room RN.  My username was selected to pay homage to my home state while also representing fellow southpaws (I hope you enjoy the logo 😉 )!

Feel free to follow me on instagram, where I plan to build and focus on my growing love for golf.

Swing Easy,

Dan

Hey Everyone! My name is Eric, thought I would introduce myself!

How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

Officially about 15 years, but I didn't become serious about my game until 2020 (COVID), nor did I play more than 3 or 4 times a year. I was still shooting 120s in the middle of 2020, now averaging mid-80s and broke 80 six times in 2023. I have played A LOT of golf in the past 3 and a half years and while I am pleased with my progress, I still have plenty of weaknesses to clean up.

What do you love about golf?

I love how extremely hard, yet rewarding it is. I also love that I can play it solo or with others, and I enjoy both equally. When I play solo I usually go out very early, and it becomes my way of connecting with nature. I find the silence of a morning solo round to be very peaceful.

What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

Honestly I Google so many things related to golf and so many results take me here, LOL. I figured joining would cut down on my Google time.

Where are you from? What is your home course?

From the Quad-Cities (IA/IL border) originally but now live in Northern Illinois, near Rockford. My home course is Lynx Golf Course at Westlake Village, Winnebago, IL.

What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

The golf scene in the Rockford area is actually really good for a small city. There are so many quality courses around here that it's hard to play them all in a season. The worst thing would be the weather of course, although I did play on Christmas Eve this year!

What do you do for a living?

I work in finance at a software company.

How’d you pick your user name?

I'm a big Justin Rose fan, so JRenaissance refers to the mini-resurgence he had in 2023, finally breaking back into the win column after 4 years without a win.

So I was fitted into a Tour Edge Exotics driver last year. They aren't the flashiest brand nor the prettiest club, but I have never been so happy with one club. By far my favorite club in the bag, followed by my Wilson D7 5H.

@JRenaissance. Welcome to the forums. Glad to see your starting out. Lots of great information to be had as you move around different topics. Quad Cities eh? I was stationed at Rock Island Arensal in the early 80's and lived in Davenport up near the old zoo. Loved golfing at the RIA Golf Club. Enjoyed watching the tugs move along the Ole Miss.

That is one hell of an improvement. Well done!

Definitely makes sense why you joined the forum. 😆

It's neat to hear you were fitted into the TourEdge driver. I hadn't heard of them prior to reading a bunch more golf stuff this past year.

Thank you sir, it's been a fun ride full of ups and downs. I wish I hadn't waited until mid-30s to really devote myself but what can you do lol.

I had heard of Tour Edge, their HQ is about an hour away from me, but they never caught my eye until in my fitting I hit the Exotics better than a Stealth, G425, TSi3, Epic, etc. I guess it just fits my swing. It was also a fraction of the price of the others, another bonus. 😄

Intro time, been lurking here for a while but just decided it was finally time to make and account.

How long have I been playing and Handicap?

Since I was about 7? And I’m 32 now so quite a while. As far as handicap I’m not paying for it currently but it’s around +2.

what bring me here?

well I just decided it was time to join in on some discussion

What do I love about golf?

it’s just really hard but also really satisfying and enjoyable. It’s great to be outside a lot because of it and you can play some incredibly beautiful courses

Where am I from and home course?

I don’t really have a home course in the traditional sense as I’m not a member anywhere but I play at my brothers course which is right by the house. I’ll sometimes play at few public courses tho

Best and worst things about golf in my region of wv?

There really aren’t many public courses to play as I live between 2 cities and there’s really only a few in each and none are particularly great except 1. And obviously can’t play much from November to March with the weather.

How’d I pick my username?

I live in wv and I was born in 91

WITB

My clubs are pretty old and I desperately need some upgrades haha.

Driver : Taylormade R11 9* Fujikura Blur 60 X

3 wood : Callaway X hot pro Project X 6.5

Irons : Titleist 710 CBs 3-PW Dynamic Gold Sensicore X 100 Irons are 2* upright and 1/2 inch long  need to get fitted  haven’t been fitted since I got them in 2010

wedges : my old club pros 50*  Vokey design oil can from 2005 lol. Getting a new SM9 in the coming weeks tho.
                 Vokey SM5 54 10 S grind

                 Vokey SM7 60 08 M grind

putter:  typically a Red Taylormade Spider Tour but sometimes use a Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2

Ball : Been testing the Prov1 and x from last year against the TP5/x from 22. I use all of them depending on conditions. But looking forward to trying out the 24 models of the TP5/x soon along with the new Callaway Chrome tour and X

Grips: typically use golf pride tour velvet cord standard size 1 wrap of tape. Got a few MCC +4 aligns to try and may try some more in midsize since I have big hands

Welcome!
It’s a little surprising that WV is in our region here. In IL, I don’t see WV in the same region for anything.
But hey, WV is a beautiful state! I drove through for the first time in October on the way to the MD coast and enjoyed it. Met some great people from WV. Also traveled to a wedding in Roanoke VA so pretty close there too.

Hello all,

My name is Tom. I'm a newbie here at the forums. I'll answer the questions as set out at the beginning of this thread.

How long have you been playing golf? I started playing golf in 1996.

What’s your handicap or normal score? I'm honestly happy to break 100.

What do you love about golf? I love being outside. Golf seems like it would be so easy. Hit this little ball into the hole. It takes work (and skill!)

What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? I really do not remember how I found this site.

Where are you from? I'm from Lafayette, Indiana

What is your home course? I used to live in Oxford, IN, so Oak Grove was my "home course". My brother and I would often walk 9 after school. I now feel that Deer Track near Frankfort, IN is my "home course". I play there as much as I can. The owners are great and I love the variety of the holes.

What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? Best thing? Reasonable green fees. Worst thing? Hot and humid summers.

What do you do for a living? I'm a Project Supervisor for the Tippecanoe County Highway Department.

How’d you pick your user name? My middle name is Vernon, my last name starts with "L", and I'm the 4th generation with Vernon as a middle name.

:taylormade-small: M6 clubs in the bag and a GARMIN Fenix 7 on the wrist!

I just want to say I have now been on this forum for 10 years.  It does not seem like that is possible, but what I have noticed is how many people are still on here from 10 years ago.  That says something and I hope everyone has a great 2024.

I am still in Central Illinois and always looking to meet people to play a round or two.

How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

  • Excluding occasional trips to a range or topgolf, I played my first round in June of 2023. Arccos says I'm at 28.7, but I don't always turn it on and that was before I took lessons (I started lessons this offseason).

What do you love about golf?

  • It's a game that seems easy enough and yet keeps humbling people over and over again. Then you hit one nice shot on the day and wish you could do that every stroke.

What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

  • Main website brought me over. Always been a forum kid, so figured I'd check it out.

Where are you from? What is your home course?

  • Chicago! I usually play at Edgebrook when I just want to play a solo round without driving far, and at Bartlett Hills or St. Andrew's in the NW Burbs closer to where some friends live if there's a group of us.

What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

  • Best - Relatively affordable options, as well as some beautiful higher-end public courses. Worst, the season's length.

What do you do for a living?

  • I work for an airline, which opens up travel opportunities for both golf and non-golf times.

How’d you pick your user name?

  • It's a variation of an old middleschool nickname.

How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

I played with my dad as a kid and all the way through high school however that was 1-2 times a year.  Never took it seriously on my own until much more recently, early 2023.  Played a bit more in covid times, as a covid ICU nurse, it was really the only way to get outside at the time with people in a safe way.

Starting out in early 2023 I was consistently 120-130 strokes a round, currently sitting mid to upper 90’s on most courses but occasionally slip into the low 100’s still.

What do you love about golf?

Honestly, the feeling of a good shot is like nothing else in the world but it’s more than that.  It’s really only a challenge against yourself at the end of the day.  Challenging yourself while outside in the crisp air alone or with friends with drinks or sober or whatever  just has something indescribable about it.

What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

As I have progressed in my golf game and looked at clubs as well as options for balls etc I generally found research driven answers here which is (more than anything) how I like to determine club options.  On top of that, I have been in a lot of hobby forums and always genuinely enjoyed the interactions with like minded people and to debate the more contested points in a friendly way.

Where are you from? What is your home course?

I am from Michigan, spent time all over the LP living between school and work, however currently splitting time between Grand Rapids  and Brighton for work/home.  Because I move around a lot I don’t really have a home course.  If I had  to chose I like Hartland Glen probably as my home course but I also haven’t played too many in this area yet.

What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

I love winter in general in MI but it definitely puts a damper on golf.  A lot of indoor golf communities have opened up around me though so I can keep golfing year round even if it’s not quite the real thing.  I will say though, the best thing about MI is also the weather.  Spring and Fall golf are some of the most peaceful times I’ve ever been out.  Summer can get to be a bit much with heat and humidity but I’ll still be out there.

What do you do for a living?

I am a nurse, graduated straight into Covid and into an ICU.  Been chaos ever since but I am currently working as a ICU travel nurse to save up for my wedding.

How’d you pick your user name?

Nex has been my online gamer tag and forum name in paintball, RC and the like for as long as I can remember.  I think initially it stemmed from me being 10 and looking up cool  Latin names for a gamer tag.  Just kinda stuck.

@Nexy welcome to the Midwest forum group. Hope you have an opportunity to check in now and then with all your travels. Thank you for your nursing service. Appreciate that. You might check out Huron Meadows Mretro park just on the south side of Brighton as well as Kensington Metro park just east of Brighton. Faulkwood Shores and Chemung are also great local courses.

I have played both Faulkwood and Chemung as well.  Lots of good courses around here with all different sorts of looks and styles.  I plan to expand down towards the metro parks soon, hopefully this year.  Golf by myself mostly so less of an incentive to travel further.

Hello, I’m Max,  I’ve been playing for about 16 years now. Took about four years off in college and have spent the past few rebuilding my game. Typically shoot around an 85. I love the constant progress that you get with golf compared to other sports. There’s never enough practice and play that can get you to get where you want to go. It’s about the journey rather than the destination. I’ve always used MyGolfSpy for reviews on equipment, just never knew this forum existed. Located in central Ohio. Don't have a specific home course as I am always trying to play a course I haven’t yet. Best thing about my area is the abundance of courses, however, weather is the biggest factor.

Play Taylormade exclusively, mentally for me my bag has to be the same throughout. Currently play the following clubs:

  • Stealth 2+ (on my second head….)
  • Brnr Mini Driver
  • Gapr Mid 3 Iron
  • 5-SW Rocketballz Max (To all be replaced this month)
  • 54 Degree MG4
  • 60 Degree Hi Toe Row
  • TP Reserve M21 Putter

Highly recommend the MG4 and TP reserve putters. Also the mini is a lot of fun if you haven’t tried them yet.

Welcome!

I've been looking at the MG4 to replace my 60* MG2TW. Likely going for the 60* LBV grind 7* bounce version that came out this year. Had a look at it in my local Golf Galaxy and I love how low it is at address when opened up. My other wedges are MG3s- 50* SB and 56* TW grind and I've been really happy with them. I have seen loads of great reviews for the MG4.

I got my Hi Toe a while ago and love it. But if I could go back and get a MG4 for my 60 as well I would’ve. The spin I’m able to generate on it is wild, sticks to the green no matter the conditions. I keep telling people they’re slept on just because of how popular Vokeys are. I would say it’s all spin based with my recommendation, so for sure go and play around on some demos!

How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

- I started playing when I was young but didn't continue as other sports took over.  Started playing more serious and consistent again about 6 years ago.  My handicap is currently at a 10.6 and usual scores are in the 80s.

What do you love about golf?

- Golf has been a great avenue to meet people who have a like minded hobby.  I have made some great friendships through the game.  There is no better way to spend a nice summer day then being outside on the golf course, unless its on a friends boat 🙂

What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

- I like that MyGolfSpy test everything equal, are unbiased and doesn't fold to the brand pressure in the golf industry.  I also started following MGS when I was putting together a sim build as they provided lots of great information and a helpful community.  I know a handful of other spies.

Where are you from? What is your home course?

- I am from Royal Oak, MI which I saw a couple other spies are located here or are in close proximity.  I have been lucky enough that my home course is Detroit Golf Club.

What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

- As many have mentioned the worst is the shortened season due to weather.  However, it is very tough to beat summer golf in Michigan, especially if you head to northern MI.

What do you do for a living?

- I work as a Manufacturers Rep in the automotive industry.

How’d you pick your user name?

- This was my original screen name back when AIM was around and I have continued to use it

- DT
