SPY VIP GolfSpy Dave Posted March 12, 2010 SPY VIP Share Posted March 12, 2010 Its definitely not about the performance. For me, Its more of an obsession I just love buying putters especially customs. Always have something new in mind to buy next. Your first post is a gem, my friend. I am the same way. I think that in addition to the joy of acquiring an beautiful custom putter that is uniquely yours, you also get to imagine how much your game will improve once it hits the course. Whenever the custom shows up and I carpet putt a bit, they are always drained 30 footers at Augusta. Sounds like you may have some cool stuff to add to a photo thread too. Matt Saternus
After 10-15 rounds, I broke my promise to game the same putter all year. I had a long couple weeks away from golf because of various nonsense and when I came back, my putting was pretty borderline. It was not the putter's fault in any way, just a lack of practice. Regardless, I needed a shake up so I switched to a different putter and felt much better on the greens the next day. Glftips
Sometimes putters need to be put in the "time out " room. Actually, changing putters will help you pay attention better and usually help you to improve for awhile. As a psych (Ph.D) I am familiar with a neuro - psych concept called the P300 resonse. For example, If you drive a Mazda every day for years and then one day, your friend asks you to drive his Lexus 430LS, all of a sudden you will pay more zattention and actually become a better driver ( no arm out the window or cell phones etc. It is a natural responce to new stimuli whether it is tools, cars or putters. After perusing the shop inventory and astro-turf testing a handful, the Ping B61 and I became a team. I might change again if I'm selected to test the Odyssey putter . Golfspy_CG2
I'm the opposite I guess. My putter is finishing it's 3rd season in the bag. Don't ask me how many sets of irons and how many drivers have come and gone since then. But the Scotty X7M just worked for me from day 1 and it's still filling up the hole more times than not. MaxEntropy
I currently have two putters in the rotation: one is a 3 year old Ping, the other a 15-ish year old STX. The Ping gets most of the action but if I am struggling with 6-10 footers, I'll pull out the STX for a couple weeks. I have no idea why it seems to help, but it does. Angry Yeti
My putter is the only club in my bag I've never replaced. It was my fathers putter and it's always done right by me. It has enough sentimental value that I can't envision myself ever replacing it. Besides, any issues I have on the putting green can be attributed to the indian. I've only had 5 putters since I started playing golf about 27 years ago. One of them was an STX Switchblade. I played it for more years than any other putter. Still have it. It was replaced by a Boccieri Heavy Putter, and then last year I was fitted for my Ping Sigma G Doon. Unless something drastic happens, that will be my last putter. “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
