I have never seen the OG in person, but to my understanding they were a bit bigger (I'm thinking G700 type) so could be worth waiting for their Pro model to come out, however the style looks pretty nice. A little rounding from the face view? Did anyone else get that impression when looking at it?

I would also kinda describe the look as industrial?

I play the OG 699 and love the looks and overall aesthetic. The update appears to be a good update to the overall line. Some folks are not keen on the new look, based on comments I've seen elsewhere, but you can't please everyone.   It will be worth a demo to see what the performance is like.

If they slimmed down the pro version a little heel to toe and a slightly thinner topline while keeping the same performance, I’d put them in the bag without hesitation.  They are some of the best feeling irons I have hit.

Yeah, honestly think the original 699s are better looking.

I wish they'd match the 699 font to the same as the Sub70 logo. The bold italics just looks clunky comparatively.

Oh, 100% interested. Full bag fitting at TrueSpec on Jan 6 (I'm not sure if Sub-70 is carried there - unlikely, but...), so I'll be trying a lot of irons in this category to see if they're a good fit. Then a possible demo when I'm ready to buy. I dig the look, and after reading about all the experiences folks round here have had, hard not to be VERY interested in these.

As for looks, I really like that they went with their own style. I think a LOT of the DTC brands source their heads from the same place - I could obviously be wrong there, but... They're almost all 790 clones. Nice to see at least a unique backside.

Sub70 is direct to consumer I believe the only place to do a fitting is with them in Chicago

Yeah, I thought (briefly) there might be a few places they had agreements with, but it looks like they only have fitting cart arrangements with a couple independent fitters.  My guess would be (or hope, anyway) that testing a bunch of the P790/Forged Tec/Players Distance-type irons and getting a feel for them, and then ordering a demo of the 699s should be enough info to figure out if it's a good fit. Not sure the next time I'll be up in Chicago-area for a real fitting, unfortunately.  My wife's company is based about 45 minutes from Sycamore, so it's possible, but not sure how realistic 🙂 ("Hey honey - that work trip of yours...you mind if I tag along and get a fitting an hour away? Great, thanks.")

It never hurts to shoot an email or call Jason at Sub 70. He’s always made himself available to talk to current or potential customers.

I’ve been wanting to try the 699 demos but then hesitate because the shaft they list probably isn’t the shaft I’d end up buying, so figure it’s a waste of time.  Maybe not a waste, but potentially not as informative to the decision making process as I’d like.

They offer a ton of different options for shafts. What is it that you generally use or need?

I have old ping steel AMT stiff which I have out-aged.  When visiting a pgass, they used the Mizuno optimizer and recommended recoil 460 F3 or a comparable tensei.  My 7i SS is somewhere around 78 based on hitting Titliest and Miz HM (~103 ball speed).  I know sub70 offers a number of shafts, but the demo club specifically lists KBS Tour 90 steel.  So maybe I’m misunderstanding and they will configure with an alternative shaft.   I Know, a phone call would clear that up.

I love that Sub 70 keeps moving forward and developing their products. Ultimately it comes down to performance and I would imagine Jason has found a way to make the 699s perform better but, on the aesthetics side, these do not look nearly as clean, to me, as the original 699s.

I think now Haywood has always had the best looking players distance irons (now that Hogan is gone again) and the 699s now don't look as good as they once did. But again, it really should be about performance.

Spoke with a chat rep this morning, and asked if they were going to have the heads in for me to demo early January (I was hoping to bring them to my fitting for a comparison), but he said while they may have them in-hand, he was doubtful they'd have extra heads for demoing, and certainly not before my 1/6 fitting. Very understandable.

I'm wondering, though, if anyone here (and I'll post in the sub-70 group as well) games a split set of the 699/699 Pros?  They don't offer it as a configurable set-up on the website, but the chat rep said they absolutely can do that, it's just a matter of calling and ordering it as such.

Anyone play this set-up?  Advantages/disadvantages?

I gamed the OG 4-6 699 and 7-GW 699 Pro for a season. Honestly, the two are so similar in shape that I'd recommend the 699 Pros for most people unless you really want the extra offset of the regular 699s. The regular 699s might be a tad longer in blade length, but it was nearly unnoticeable to my eyes.

One thing I didn't like about the 699/699 Pros is that they seem to sit a little open at address for me. I struggled with getting aim correct as I'd always be aiming too far right. I ended up painting the bottom groove, which helped some, but something about them didn't jive with me.

That being said, they are very hot and forgiving on toe hits, which I need.

This post reminds me I need to get them removed from their current shafts and onto B/S/T so they can go to a place where they will be used again... 😀

Great feedback, thank you! I've definitely been leaning towards the Pro-side of things - I've tried visualizing the blade-size differentials (from their website, it's minimal), and it doesn't seem enough to ultimately justify splitting it up.

Good to hear about the "open at address" - my miss tends to be slightly right, so that may not be ideal - I'd have to demo them, probably, to fully get a sense for that.

In my chat with the rep online, he said that the main difference between the new ones and old ones is longer and less spin - when I asked if that meant the lofts were different, he said they may be 1-to-2 degrees stronger - kind of a bummer, honestly, as 31-degree 7-iron was looking really good to me.  Wouldn't shock me to see a 30-degree, since that's become pretty standard on a lot of the PD clubs, but...I don't necessarily need more distance (but I do get that it sells).

Let me know when you get these on B/S/T 😉 I may just try and use my Nippon 105s (currently in my Sim Max irons)...I've been looking for an excuse to try my hand at building a set. 🙂

Well, well, well - look what just dropped (literally 1 minute ago - got a notice on my phone).

I'll report back after seeing it 🙂

Overall, they're super impressed - great ball-speed, really, really nice sound (at least from my POV) - seems like that badging is doing some good work, despite it not being everyone's favorite look.  Sounds like Sub-70 have another winner on their hands with this set.  Excited to try them.

I would really like to see these in person although I don't think that will be possible for me. So therefore I have to rely on you all to take super impressive photos and do some accurate reporting and comparisons to inform my decision on these.

I have a set of the 699 Pros first generation. enjoyed hitting them. I felt they were very solid. the one item I could not get over was the "roundness" of the leading edge. I never felt comfortable looking down at that round edge. played them for one season, and went back to Pings. Now using Ping i525's. if the leading edge is flattened out, I would try another set for fun. Currently in a bag for guests, when clubs are needed.

I’m paying very close attention. The TXG review of them was very positive. Didn’t plan on buying new irons this year but that plan may change in January.

GREAT looking irons. Sub70 HQ is only about a 2.5 hour drive from me, and I am planning on making the trek down there when I upgrade my irons. Might be a couple seasons yet, but gosh, what a good price value compared to some of the big boys.
