DQOTD: Does An Umbrella Really Help Walking With A Cart?

Middler

Recommended Posts

I really like to walk as much as I can, but the summer heat/humidity is just more than I can handle, July/August especially. I’ve seen a few people with carts walking with their umbrella holder and an open umbrella. Does that make a significant difference to beat the heat? I may try it tomorrow and drop out, or rent a riding cart, after 9 holes if the heat is too much.

Yes especially if using a UV umbrella. It keeps the sun off of you and keeps you cooler. When outside it’s usually cooler in the shade than the sun, same concept here

Ive used just a regular umbrella and it’s fine, the uv one is just a lot better

+1 - it is your personal portable shade

I do it now that the sun is beating down in Middle TN for several reasons (1) it is definitely cooler (2) it reduces my fatigue that I think I get from some version of sun poisoning (3) I don't feel like I have lather on sun lotion every hour and (4) our course has a 5 hole stretch that is covered up with dense trees and there is no wind moving at all.

There are a few obvious challenges that can arise (1) it can be hard to get the right height depending on how good (or bad) your umbrella holder is that comes with your cart. (2) Wind can be quite annoying when it kicks up over 10-15 mph but the good news is that should make it less hot. (3) And this is probably just a me problem, I have a small bag so there is not a good place to store my umbrella when I am not using it.

Lots of folks at my club do so in the Sun and I think I will be doing so this forecasted hot and sunny weekend. But I recall one day when it got quickly windy, we saw a push cart half flying, half tumbling down an adjacent fairway and a guy running after it - so I guess a PSA about being aware of weather conditions could be in order - me, I expected that an umbrella would release from the holder …..

I definitely it helps, especially on bright, sunny days with little wind.  The UV is better than a traditional umbrella, but a traditional umbrella is better than nothing.  My 12 year old daughter won't play without one on sunny days.  My kids and I have found ourselves walking/playing more here in when we use the umbrella on our push carts.  But when the dew point gets over 70, nothing helps hold off the heat except the breeze.

This has been a hot topic for me recently. I used to only ever use one for rain. Truly never thought about one for sun. However I see them everywhere now and it's been hot as all get out recently so I think next round I am going to give it a try...

Details to follow.

I think that it is a definite benefit on the hot and sunny days. When I can keep my head shaded more often, the heat doesn’t seem to be such a factor for me in having an enjoyable round.

Helps keep the sun off and not get burnt. Doesnt help too much with the heat. Just remember to fold it or it will blow away.

Interesting - I never thought of using it with a pushcart. I do see the Asian ladies always using one on the LPGA tour (using while walking not on push cart).

That could also be a cultural thing as well;  I have read in the past that Asians associate being tan with being poor/lower class.   While I don’t use one, probably still a good thing for shade and sun protection.

Heard the same, it’s why you see so many with sun sleeves or other longer sleeved clothing on.

I planned to use an umbrella with my cart last Friday, then it actually rained. I have a 3:50 tee time this Friday and will be trying it out. If I like it, I’ll look into the UV umbrellas.

Yes, I use mine all the time between Memorial Day and a little after Labor Day - not sure if I could walk otherwise, especially during July/August, here in FL/Gulf Coast.  Plus if that occasional pop up storm we're noted for starts your umbrella is already out.

Massively helpful. Made the switch to the Sun Mountain UV model umbrella this summer. Even better than the old normal umbrella.  Nice place to hang sweaty gloves and cooling towels as well.
