2024 Season Goals - What Say You?

2023 Goals:

- Win my club's Wednesday Night League      CHECK!

- Defend my title in the match play tournament      CHECK!

- Win my points in my club's Ryder Cup style tournament (Chesapeake Cup)   CHECK!

- Drive #15 or #9  (349 yds, and 367 yds respectively)    NOPE.

- Shoot even par for 9 holes (Front 9 at home club)   CHECK!

- Shoot even par for 9 holes (Back 9 at home club)    CHECK!

 

 

2024 Goals:

- Shoot even par on 18 holes

- Shoot under par on 18 holes

- Shoot in the 60's for 18 holes

- Defend WNL title

- 3-Peat match play

- Win my Ches Cup points

- Win my club's 2-day stroke play championship (Shannahan Cup)

- Play MSGA Mid Am

- ******  Win Club Championship  ******

(this is the DREAM.  There are a few guys with + handicaps, including one on the Korn Ferry Tour.)

Okay, took me awhile but think I got all updated goals to the spreadsheet! Keep them coming and lets see how many members can knock their 2024 goals out this year! We are up to 90 members so far!

Also while I am at it, I am going to add another couple goals to my 2024 list.

Goal #4: Make the alternate shot playoff round in the annual member/guest tournament. My uncle and I missed it by half a point last year, and my play has drastically improved since then. I think we can do this one for sure, but want to add it to the list for extra motivation and accountability.

Goal #5: Play in my course's Club Championship. I did not play in it last year as I had a buddies golf trip planned for the same weekend. We currently have no plans on that weekend this year and I already put it on the calendar. This would be my first run at a solo tournament. Even though it's just the club championship, I have not played any real competitive solo golf.

My goal for 2023 was break 100.  Nope.  Retire, yes, mid November.  Play more after retirement, yes.

Goal for 2024:  first, I need to fix my toe.  Arthritis.  I decided it is time for the fusion surgery.  I am 69, want to play 2 or 3 x weekly for the next 10 years.  Can't do it if my toe feels ok for front 9 and hurts like hell on the back.  I hope the toe surgery works as well as the total knee replacement and the thumb basal joint arthroplasty.  Then, my goal will be not just 100, but 90.  And to play Tilden Park in Berkeley, CA, and some of the courses in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains.  California is too rich in natural beauty to just play locally.

While I like my bag o clubs, I find small changes to try.  I am now banging away on a "found" 15 yr old Callaway 454 Ti driver while my new PXG 0211 sits for a while.  I am swinging faster and probably need a slighlty stiffer shaft in the PXG.  I also realized I needed a wedge for really tight, hard pan, lies near the green so I picked up a Vokey 58 deg 4 bounce "T" grind even tho I like my Mizunos.  If I were still a steelworker in Ohio I would have jsut ground my Mizuno myself but I am 2500 miles away and don't know any machine shops around here. My local muni is like a Marine:  lots of buzz cut instead of a head of hair.  Not much rough, more bare dirt and shaved crud on the sides of the greens.

First of all, I believe every one of you has what it takes to achieve your season goals I have many myself but I will try to keep it short.

1) Take Lessons. I have found a local coach that has nothing but high marks, and I am going to take my shillings and invest my time with him. I was inbetween this and a new iron set to start and I believe the lessons are the right choice. And honestly, it just means one extra month without shiney brand new clubs. 

Which leads to:

2) average between 3-5 GIR. (My biggest goal for 2024)

3) 1st birdie (I have been close a couple of times now, so I kind of want it to be 'golf pretty')

4)Find a local group of golf buddies. None of my friends or coworkers play! Trying to convince them is not working.

5) Play in a local tourney towards the end of the year.

6) I am taking a road trip with my Fiance from the last week of August through the 1st week of October and I will be hitting courses all along the way (she gave the green light). I have a golf buddy in Virgina that I already have a week full of golfing set up for, but my goal here is to see all the beautiful courses across North America (we are going to Canada too Ay'). And possibly meet up with some spies!

Let's crush 2024 everybody!

1. Play at least 20 rounds this season (I played 10 last season)
2. No three putts

No 3 putts is a good one. I need to add that one to mine.

While it could be a goal,  I don't think it is a realistic goal.   Maybe make it more definitive like no 3 putts from 20 feet or one 3 putt every X number of rounds.   Even the best in the world 3 putt occasionally (even from 2 feet).

Definitely right I think in my head I was picturing those 2nd putts that skimmed the edge of the cup that I wish I had back.

How far away were those 2nd putts?    If inside 3 feet then you probably should have made them.  Outside of that,  probably a bad 1st putt.  Work on getting those 1st putts inside a 6 foot diameter circle around the hole.

Definitely some in the 3-4 ft range I was not proud of. So, spending extra time in the practice area. As always you're a wizard . Sometimes I over-broaden my realistic expectations when I comment. I need to get better at being specific, especially since golf is very meticulous.

I just know you are still learning the game and IMO, managing expectations is a huge part of understanding the game and figuring out areas of our game that need improvement.

I have a board and I'm going to put it on my office door as a reminder.

Tilden is a terrific course. The first hole is a bit of an uphill battle, but the third hole is a big downhill payoff into a serene valley.

I’ll have to come back to this after seeing how the rest of this month’s practice is going, but I’ve laid out some initial goals.

Increase arm strength in leading arm and wrist

That speaks to a broader theme which is to get into an exercise regimen. 

Get on a course once a week

Once the weather breaks, I want to find a home course. I’ve got a 9-hole that I’m enjoying, and I believe it’s been helping a great deal with my shots just off the green. But by summer I want to pull out the driver find some fairways.

Bring driving range mindset to the course

Land approach shots on the green

These two goals are related. The 9-hole course has given me a great deal of confidence in landing pitch shots on the green and chipping closer to the hole. Now I want to land balls from 100-150 yards out. I can do it with little problem on the driving range and in practice mode in the sim stall, and I want to transfer that mindset.

This is great, though. I’ll be thinking about my goals as spring draws closer.

2024 is off to a slow start for me since it’s been frigid and snowy all year, I’ve yet to play a round or go to the range (it’s been closed) yet but I’m sticking with my goals!

1. spend 2 hours weekly on the putting green with targeted practice. 
2.  Play 10 new courses (I played 5 in 2023)
3. Play 150 rounds
4. take 2 golf trips (one planned so far @ Big Cedar to play Payne’s Valley)
5. win my flight at my Clubs member-guest

hats off to everyone setting their goals, it was awesome to read through them on the spreadsheet. Best of luck!!

That’s why my third goal is to manage my expectations. But seriously, breaking down my goal a bit more. If I can drop “all” of my putts that are within three feet, that takes a lot less pressure off of the first putt. Because now I’m focused on pacing and line to put me within a 6’ circle / 3’ diameter of the cup.

@Michael.Sandoval33, as your "small print states, yes, golf is supposed to be fun. That was one of my goals for 2024, no matter what, remember golf is fun.

Hi cnosil.  You might have an answer:  are there any face balanced blade type putters?  I putt cross handed, straight, mallet types, but I looked at MGS blade v mallet lab test, and I am willing to look at any face balanced blades to try improve over my Odyssey Stroke Lab "R BALL".

I don't know of many face balanced blade putters that are on the newer side.   You can go back in years and find quite a few.

1. Break 90 at this one course that is the complete bane of my existence, and the only course left that I play regularly where I have not broken 90.

2. Break 80 at a course other than my home club. So far that is the only course where I've done it. Have had low 80s at several different places. Hoping the offseason adjustments get me over the hump.

3. Play in my first tournament and be competitive. I have yet to play golf competitively or in any sort of pressure situation. Nervous but I need to take the leap!

Been thinking some about this lately, and decided to outline the following .. what are for me pretty ambitious .. playing goals per 9 holes...

... I'm feeling that if (big IF) I can hit the ball carefully and play smartly then I can start to move closer to these goals, and closer to playing some good golf!

Related: started this past December and am already in much better condition, and stronger, vs last year

I switched to cross handed a few years ago, love it, with face balanced.  Took a while but my grip is very similar to Brian harman and to that 19 yr old LPGA rookie who won an event about 3 months ago.  Especially the longer the putt, the more I like the accuracy cross handed.  YMMV.  FWIW.  ICYMI.  OMG. LMFAO.  LSMFT. Grins n ggles.

I am in and the company is top tier which is all that matters.
