Richard D. Shows II
No big purchases in 2023. Just golf balls (Calaway ERC Soft/Srixon QSTAR TOUR/TM Soft Response(cold weather ball)). Also bought a few shirts, some shorts and a pair of shoes. In 2024 will probably replace my PING G Series 3, 4 & 5 hybrids. Manny
My big purchase of this past summer was the Alphard Club Booster V2 and front wheels. I love the fact that I can send my cart to the next shot, and having it waiting for me. I had a perfectly working Clicgear 3.5 with all the accourterments, so I didn't want to spend $1500 or more for another cart then get all the little goodies again. The V2 adapts to my 3.5 and I put moveable front wheels so it tracks better and also is less stress on the V2. My shoulders and back feel much better after 18 and fatigue is way down. If you have a push cart already and want to add the V2 let me know, maybe I can help you. jbern
I'll follow @tony@CIC system and evaluate my 2023 purchases. Sub70 659CB 5-AW irons: I was coming from stock Wilson C200 game improvement irons with stock regular flex shafts. I was fit for loft/lie/length/shaft for my irons right at the beginning of 2023. All of these were out with the Wilson C200s. I found the Sub70 irons in my exact specs on fb marketplace, so I haggled a bit and ended up with a decent used set. They are a little beat up, but the faces and grooves were in very good shape. I really like the feel of clubs, especially with a well struck shot. My distance and dispersion have also improved with the new set that both fits and feels better. I could probably use more forgiveness in the 5-6 iron slots. Sub70 286 54* & 58* wedges: I got these as part of the deal with purchasing the irons. I really like them and the way they interact with the ground and sand on shots around the green. On full shots they have been consistent and reliable. I've only used cheap wedges in the past (big mistake!), so I don't have any premium wedge experience to compare them to. I can tell that they've lost quite a bit of spin since I purchased them used at the beginning of last season. So I'll probably end up looking into some replacements in 2024. Sub70 AL-6 armlock putter: I did a full unofficial member review here. To sum it up quickly; Putting has been the worst part of my game. I'm getting along great with the putter and armlock putting method. Statistically, putting is no longer the worst part of my game and I attribute that to the armlock putting method, the AL-6, and focusing on putting when I practice. I do still have distance control problems, which I'm actively working on to improve. THGOLF rangefinder: It was VERY cheap ($38 on Amazon prime day) and works okay. I have to click the button a few times and there were some tricks to learn with it, but the range itself is just as accurate as other premium rangefinders I've borrowed. It has a hard time with distances that are not the flagstick or trees (e.g. like getting distances of the front and back of a bunker don't seem to work). My favorite "feature" is that it doesn't require rangefinder batteries. It charges with a USB-C cable. Graves Golf Single Plane grips: I've been doing the Graves single plan swing for a couple of years. I needed new grips of the irons. These grips have different grip patterns for the pressure points on the hands for the single plane swing. They took longer to install than standard grips and I've also used grips that feel better in the hand. Overall, they do their job and help me get to my setup quicker and feel good (not great). Clicgear 4.0 pushcart: This was not a purchase, but I was an official MGS forum reviewer over the summer for this pushcart. You can read my review here. Phenomenal pushcart! I'd recommend it to anyone. Titleist TSR2 15* 3 wood: Again, not an actual purchase. I won this for finishing runner up (after DQs) in the Open Championship pick'em game the forum put on. I hadn't used a 3 wood since the my Tommy Armour 3 wood broke 16 years ago. It was a big gap in my bag between the 5W (225 yd carry) and Dr (270 yd carry). The TSR2 has filled the gap perfectly and has been a great addition to the bag. It's also been a dream to use off the tee when needed. The Project X Blue Smoke shaft has felt great also! Fabletics Only Short: Great shorts for golf. Cheap for new buyers (I think I got 2 for $24). 32 Degrees Golf Pant: I got in on the Thanksgiving time sales here and got a pair of their golf pants for $17. They are great. Good fabric, good quality, wash easily, dry easily and have good pockets. 32 Degrees Polos: Again, I got in on the Thanksgiving time sales here and I got 3 polos for $24. They are very thin, but good quality. I even had an issue with sizing and they corrected it professionally and promptly. Not my favorite polos because my nips show through, but when it's summer and hot, I'm not going to care one bit. I'm certain I missed a few things, but there you have it. Overall, I'm pleased with my 2023 purchases. I have some work to do on my setup, but it's been improving slowly. GolfPro59
I decided to upgrade my Ping I200 irons with new "senior shafts" (getting older 75) and then went on ebay to try out a couple of good buys on new shafts for my driver & 3wd. Kenny B
I guess I was a slacker in 2023. My only club purchase was a Callaway Epic Max LS driver with a regular flex Hzrdus Smoke shaft from CPO; not to replace my Epic Max with Cypher 50 5.0 shaft (although it has so far). I wanted to see if I could feel a difference. Purchased in November and it works well in windy conditions. I need more time with it in the spring. I feel like I should be buying something this year, but honestly I don't have anything I want to replace. Maybe on my next golf trip I'll come home with something I don't need. Oh wait!! I did buy the Jones Bag Trouper MGS Forum logo carry bag. I love it, and I did need a new carry bag. However, I had to put my old Wilson Staff carry bag in play when the weather turned bad; didn't want to get mud and goose poop on the MGS logo!! I also purchased 4 dozen of the new Maxfli Tour S (2 dozen in White and 2 dozen in Yellow). I've been playing the Yellow all Fall and Winter and gave a dozen of the Yellow to my wife. I think she's a convert from her Titleist TruFeel Yellow balls. I now only have a few yellow balls left, so the white balls will see action soon. steveone
I was a good boy last year. Upgraded my 2015 technology Callaway Epic to 2020 Honma tr20 460 based on the MGS reviews that year (guys who tried them out - made them their gamer). $650 to $700 when new (Japan made including the shaft) for $155 Listed as very good (not a scratch to my old eyes). The 9 deg. head, stiff shaft, adjusted to 10 deg. Hotter off the face (not a huge difference) but the high toe hits (my usual miss) go great. This geezer hit 14 drivers last round an average of 257 total using a GPS app and buddies golf watch. 279 three times. Still pretty flexible and good power at my age (75). I'm in Hawaii, still warm here - my back is 15 years younger away from winter. AND New (to me) Wilson Staff D9 forged irons. Were rated as good - looked more like returned Demo clubs - almost unmarked. Top rated here on MGS player distance testing a couple of years back. They've restored my pop. 7 iron was a consistent 163-5 yds. on the radar at the local hitting palace; my old 7 iron was 152 on average. Replaced my older (1996~) Maltby forged cavity backs. I'd worn out the wedges/9/8 and replaced them with same a couple of times. The stronger lofts in the Wilsons are balanced out by the flex face and low tungsten weighting. If anything, a bit higher flight. Changing out the grips to mid-size and going to check/bend the lie next week based on my strike pattern. Nothing wrong with a couple year old technology for 50 to 60% off. "Steve, you are a cheap bastard." Got fitted into the Gen 6 driver by another fitter and the results showed in my improved ballflights. Glad I did another fitting, very happy with the Gen 6. Purchased new golf shoes from Footjoy Pro/SL Sport in wide size as I have a bunion on my right foot. got then for under $100.
