The 3 things I’m interested in are:

  1. Improved distance on quality shots
  2.  improved dispersion on all shots
  3.  improved confidence over the ball

I don’t know how TM got the video of the face flex/deflection at impact on off center strikes of the Qi10 vs. the Stealth, but the video blew me away.

The comparison starts around the 9minute mark.

I was impressed by the slow motion impact video of Nelly making contact with the Qi10 v her Stealth.

There is no greater evidence of stability than that video…I’m interested to see if any of you can offer your own thoughts on how the 10K is providing more forgiveness.

The video is very interesting. I wish there would be a line on the shaft because to me it looks like tip of the shaft is twisting on the Stealth to make the head twist so much vs. the Qi. Unless the carbon face of the Qi is absorbing the twist hence the head not deflecting so much.

Unboxing/First Impressions

As mentioned previously, the sweet sight of a FedEx delivery man graced my driveway on Monday. IMG_2594.jpeg

Rocky, the guard beagle, was on full alert. He kindly let the driver know to conduct his business in a quick and courteous manner, and not to overstay his welcome.

IMG_2595.jpeg

Time to make the donuts…

IMG_2596.jpeg

Similar to the others, the packaging was clean and simple, while the internal packing met the minimum requirements for protection of the precious cargo it was charged with keeping safe

IMG_2597.jpeg

IMG_2598.jpeg

I am going to take a moment to highlight one aspect Taylor Made absolutely got right, no questions asked and that is the head cover, simple, elegant and classy. Well Done.

IMG_2601.jpeg

Especially considering this abomination that came with my current gamer:

IMG_2625.jpeg

Included was a spec sheet for the build.

IMG_2599.jpeg

(Placeholder for the unboxing video, that frustratingly would not load, will be added in post)

Suffice to say the club made it to me unharmed and it is as gorgeous as you might imagine.

As if the weather gods had a conversation with the golf gods and decided to throw me a bone, we have had temps in the high 60’s the last two days, which for the end of February, ain’t too shabby. So off to the range I went.

My initial session with the LS was a bit of a feeling out but the numbers were encouraging:

IMG_2606.png

In comparison with the baseline numbers I grabbed for the Paradym TD prior to the arrival of the LS:

IMG_2521.jpeg

There are modest gains, but nothing to get too excited about.

Which brings us to today and range session #2, this time the LM data is provided by top tracer. The day was warm, but the clouds were giving off a “go ahead and set up your mlm2pro, so we can let loose” vibe. So I opted for the covered hitting bays, rather than the turf range.

Today went a long way toward making me a believer:

IMG_2613.jpeg

I am acclimating to this Driver nicely. Today’s session resulted in the following thoughts

1. These numbers are based on average range balls, which makes me giddy thinking about what this driver will be capable of, with good balls on the course.

2. The center of the club is easy to find, and while there were some misses, it produces a great shape, and the misses didn’t feel punitive.

IMG_2612.jpeg

Lastly, as mentioned prior, the shaft I was fit into, Tensei Black 65 X was backordered until sometime in March, so Taylor Made sent the Kai Li White 70 X in its place. After today’s session, I take back every unkind thought I had about this arrangement but didn’t vocalize. Today went a long way toward making me a believer of this shaft. It felt great, and that is a relief.

the work continues…

Nice update @GolfSpy_BEN…love the update!

Sure the shaft is twisting, because the clubhead is deflecting so much due to the decreased MOI. It's putting torque on the shaft, since the clubhead and shaft are fixed to each other. Much less torque from the Qi, and much less shaft twisting. It's still twisting the Qi shaft too, just not as much.

I agree with you but you would think you would see the Qi face give some. That force has to go somewhere unless it is all going into the ball then. Who is to say that they ran the test with two different shafts with different torque values? I wouldn't think so but there is a obvious difference in the video.

Small sample size thus far, but I think Taylor Made has something with this iteration of the twist face. When swinging the LS, the face doesn’t feel like it moves during impact at all. So as long as path and face are where they need to be at impact, the ball goes exactly where I aim. While this is mostly true of any driver, thus far the face of QI-10 just feels easier to maintain through the swing. It could be recency bias, so it is something I will monitor throughout the testing period.

Does that also apply to the drop kicks or toe balls?

If so, that’s going to make a lot of folks pay attention…

After a too long delay, I finally got to the range and was able to take some swings with the Qi10.

qi10range.jpg.72e1d32681c607a070b6453ea780901c.jpg

It was a gorgeous day.  I had a good swing going, but not much power after lifting and doing golf speed training early morning.  This range is mats only, and I was stuck with a shorter rubber tee, which meant I could not really swing up on the ball to achieve the launch angles I desire.  Being stuck in the 12* launch angle zone cost me at least 20 yards of carry distance.  I tried a higher loft setting, but the spin crept into the mid 3000s.  No bueno.  I tried to clobber the ball for a while, but no luck really; so I opted to try for reliable, low-teed fairway finders, and that was quite successful.  I could easily hit shorter, lower, mid-2000s spin shots at an upright, 8* setting that went straight pretty much no matter what.  Toe strikes lost a little distance, but were also straight.  I was impressed.  At first blush the forgiveness claimed by TaylorMade appears to be there.  But I was frustrated that I could not dial in the perfect settings.  Which means I will just have to go find another, better range tomorrow!  (Data was collected from the Foresight GC2.)

This was still a good test IMO.  If you like, check back in later today, and I will update when the full first impressions post is, er, posted.

Getting to the range and seeing its mats only is one of the worst feelings in the world. Glad to see you were still able to get some solid swings in.

My misses thus far, again small sample size, have been toe side. There is a little distance loss, but the shape has stayed consistent. So far, no banana slices or hard hooks. Mostly straight or subtle fades, with a few draws mixed in.

I concur totally with Ben.  Toe misses, to which I am prone, still fly pretty well with only some lost distance but good dispersion.  I will *try* to replicate toe misses and measure data on results, and I suspect Ben will do the same.  He is probably a good enough golfer to do so; for me, we'll see.

Does that also apply to the drop kicks or toe balls?

If so, that’s going to make a lot of folks pay attention…

I actually had the issue yesterday at the Sim where I was leaving the face open on impact and caught the heel more than a couple of times. While the ball did veer off right about 30 yards, there was only around 10-15 yards of distance lost in the those instances. Toe shots have been a rarity this far with the Max, but with such as small sample size, I cannot remark too much further.

Getting to the range and seeing its mats only is one of the worst feelings in the world. Glad to see you were still able to get some solid swings in.

Where are all of these ranges that aren't only mats? I tried to find one in the my area, but no luck.

Struggle around here too, I'm jealous! Most ranges have the option for grass, but either neglect/baby it too much to be useable. Have thankfully found one that stays pretty consistent, but it's about half an hour away.

Mats themselves are not awful IMO if the mats are in decent shape.  I vastly prefer grass however.

Now, mats that will not accept wooden tees, or with short/crappy rubber tees or no tee at all - hurrible, turrible.

Working at getting better ... and very slowly getting there.

I prefer hitting off of actual turf and tees, but when the weather isn’t cooperating and I have to move to the mats, I grabbed a couple of these off of amazon for cheap.

I keep one in the bag, so I can always control the height of the tee I’m hitting off of.
