I always intended to go with heavier head as that’s my preference. Very happy so far with the performance

I went with the heavier weighted head and am happy that I did so far. My gamer is a TM Spider tour, and that has some heft as well. I like the "feel" of that weight at the end. That being said, I did weigh both as the DF3 felt perceptibly lighter the moment I picked it up, but it was only 10g lighter.

I also went with the heavier head option. My gamer putter head is 400g + I added 30g of lead tape. The heavier head definitely feels closer to that than the standard weight head would. 

I believe the fitter with LAB mentioned, either in @CFreddie's video interview or in an email response to me, that most people prefer the heavier head, unless they are used to something lighter.

I was able to get out and play 9 holes and I had my lowest putts on 9 holes this year with 15. This had little to do with the DF3 and mostly was a result of poor approach play. I had a rib injury about 10 days ago that is still very uncomfortable, so I'm blaming that for the poor swings!

My longest made putt was on the 2nd hole from 7 ft. It was a tricky downhill right-to-left putt and it felt GREAT to knock that one in. The two I wish I had back was the 2nd putt on hole 6 (6 ft) and the 1st putt on hole 10 (10 ft). I pushed both way right of the hole, not even giving them a chance and I clearly felt that I was trying to manipulate the putter face. 

All of my longer putts felt very good and I was surprised how well the distance control went for the first round outdoors. Even the 29 ft. putt that I left 6 ft. short felt good, I just misjudged how severely uphill it was.

Could I have had similar performance with my AL-6? Probably, but given how well distance control went, I give the first outdoor round with the DF3 two thumbs up!

Now that we all have our L.A.B. DF3 putters and started testing them, I would like to share my Putter testing Protocol.  I am absolutely thrilled about the testing opportunity for the L.A.B. DF3 putter.  From a testing point of view, I want to know does it live up to its claims and the technology behind it as well as my thoughts and observations on feel, balance, alignment and face control.  It will tested on Quintic to determine how well it works for me in a putter fitting at TXG (Club Champion Canada).  Quintic is the gold standard for putter fitting launch monitors. Essentially I will be rolling 12’ putts on a stable platform with ball, roll and putter motion captured by high speed cameras. This will determine, face control, launch angle, spin, alignment and path.  And lastly, is the L.A.B, DF3 good value for the money?

The additional benefit of this testing it will also allow me to hopefully improve my make ability of 5 foot, 5-10 foot and 10-20 foot putts. For putts of 20 feet or longer, the goal will be to get it the hole as close as I can for two putt and avoid three putts.  I will be tracking my one putt, two putt and three+ putts using Arccos.  As reference, from Arccos/From MyGolfSpy Labs: The Arccos Putting Study | MyGolfSpy

 A few things critical to me when selecting a putter.

Alignment - does it provide sufficient aid to ensure that you can easily line up your putt on your intended path such that it is reliable and consistent. Does it allow you to consistently roll the ball along your intended target line. So if you had a putting ruler or place a dime 12-18” in front of you will it consistently roll over the dine or along the ruler.

Face control/Delivery - another key component for me. Are you able to consistently deliver the putter face to the ball such that there is minimal or no twisting of the face the ball rolls true without much initial skidding

Weight, feel and balance - I prefer putters that feel smooth and balanced with a preference for a softer feel off the face

Grip and sound – Prefer larger grip that is comfortable in my hands

Technology – What’s different about this putter or makes it unique

Comparator putters and why:  I have a series of comparators all fitted for me in the past, an Evnroll tourstroke, Odyssey 7 exo, and Scotty Cameron phantom X11.  All the comparators have been retrofitted with BGT stability shaft and Evnroll gravity grip. The stability shaft by Breakthrough technology golf is an ultra stiff putter specific shaft that has significantly helped my putting.  

Performance metrics: 5 foot, 10 foot and 20 foot putts and numbers made.  What I’m particularly keen to test is how it performs from ten feet and in and especially 5 feet and in. Consistent one putts from this range will shave significant strokes off your handicap. But what is the data on this. Tour average from 5 feet is 80%. For scratch golfers it’s about 70%? Can we get close to scratch or even somewhat close. Same test from 10 feet.  From 10 feet, tour average is 40%, whereas scratch (0 handicap) is at 25%.  From ten feet plus, my goal is to try and get it as close as possible.  From 20-30 feet, can I get it within a 6’ radius, such that I come away with 2 putts and avoid the dreaded 3 putts

Speed and lag control.- grouping – are they relatively tight spacing or all over the place

Makeability – Can I consistently make short putts, can I make the occasional long putt *>20 feet)

Testing on Quintic - One of my goals with the L.A.B. is to test it on Quintic and also see how each of my putters fares on Quintic. I will rely heavily on TXG (Club Champion Canada) to help me with this.  The putter fitting has been booked with Mike Martysiewicz of TXG (Club Champion Canada), who is their Director of Club building and fitting in Canada.  While my putters have been fitted, they have never been tested head to head on Quintic. Will Quintic be able to tell me which putter works best for me? Right now I’m relying on what I see on course and from my Arccos data.

On course testing - A lot of my on-course testing will take place at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley.

 They have 3 high quality golf courses and an excellent practice and short game facility, but more importantly is that the greens roll true and are consistent so to give a good estimate of how the putters are working. I’m trying to avoid greens where you see varying or wild fluctuations which would impact the test.  I will provide regular updates on my progress. e.g. initial round, after 3 rounds, after 5-6 rounds, after 10 rounds, etc.  

Indoor testing - I will also using the indoor putting green at my indoor golf facility which mimics an actual green.

Impact on putting game and stats - Arccos vs historical controls.  How will the L.A.B. compare to my 20 or 50 round average putting statistics with the Evnroll (Arccos data).

Value – Cost vs. performance  Does the L.A.B. DF3 provide good value for the money

Overall assessment - Based on the above testing metrics, I will rate and grade the L.A.B. DF3 out of a scale of 100. It will be broken down into First impressions (15%), Performance/the numbers (35%), On the course (10%), the Good, the bad, the in between (20%) and Play it or trade it (20%) with my conclusions.

 I welcome comments thoughts and suggestions from things people would like to know or test

My comparator putters. Both the Scotty and Evnroll are very good. Where the Evnroll wins out, is that I can more often make more long putts (>20’) with the Evnroll.  Switching back to the Evnroll gravity grip already has made a significant difference. The Scotty beat out the Odyssey for the same reason. All 3 have stability shafts and Evnroll gravity grip. The Scotty and Odyssey have the original stability shaft which is heavier than the stability tour in the Evnroll which is a more streamed down version. The extra weight of the shaft is somewhat offset by the counterbalanced Evnroll gravity grip which has a 10”, 70 gm steel rod inserted in the grip.  For more information on this, see my review

One comment I will make about my way-too-early first impressions is the way the bottom of the DF3 is made, I LOVE that when you set it down, the DF3 automatically sits at the correct lie angle. No need to guess. The flat area that you see circled in the photo below allows for this to happen and I'm a big fan!

In my original review of the DF2.1 from 2022, the thing that I kept coming back to was this very fact.  I knew, if I set the putter flat on the ground, EXACTLY where to stand, and it took yet another variable I was historically terrible at gauging correctly off the table.  I just KNEW that if the putter was flat, that I was in a good position.  If it was toe up, I was too far away, and if it was heel-up, I was too close.  It literally changed my game.  My previous putters all had some kind of beveling or rounding off to the bottom and I could NEVER tell if the putter was in the right spot, and therefore I couldn't tell if I was in the right spot.  It feels like magic, but it's just ... flat. LOL.  I love the DF3 for the same reason.

In my DF2.1, I have the smooth 3-degree Press II.  It was a rather large (hehe) adjustment at first, as I'd only had either pistol or skinny grips, but after a few trips to my local putting green, it became VERY comfortable.  One of the things I love about the larger size is that it really feels like it takes my hands out of the swing - it just sits so easily in my palms that rocking my shoulders back and forth becomes very easy.  With a much smaller grip, I'm typically more tempted to get my hands more involved.

In the DF3, I opted for the white, textured pistol grip - 2-degrees of forward press, so it's still familiar, but I have to say I absolutely prefer it (so far, after one round of 18 and lots of at-home rolling) - the pistol shape is VERY comfortable, and the textured grip is outstanding.  If I decide to stick with the 2.1, I may very well send it back to have it re-gripped with the 3-degree textured version (or just order one and see if I can install myself).

This is one of my current concerns with my choice of the Garsen Quad Tour 17 grip. With a skinnier grip it seems to be easier to get handsy. It is a very comfortable grip, just much skinnier than I'm used to with the AL-6 and the JMX Jumbo 17!

Huge improvement over my last round. My distance control was so much better. I had 17 putts for 9 holes. I had one 3-putt that should not have occurred. I had six 2-putts and two 1-putts. The 3-putt was a lip out and one of my 2-putts was a lip out. So a better result all around. Nemo is finding his way home.

I went in cautiously. My last two putters were Evnroll putters. I am a big believer in their “Sweet Face Technology” concept for their putter face. The DF3 has a much softer “feel” than the ER11v. I now feel more comfortable with the feel and plan to get more “technical” with the testing and get some time on either a SAM Lab or Quintec system. I need to check availability in my area, to compare the two companies approacher to putting.

The Pistol grip has been a game changer for me.  

I use the palm grip with and interlock fingers and thumbs on top.  Takes all the hands out of it.

The Pistol grip is better than expected and given the all the the attention of the shaft and putter head it’s a a somewhat under appreciated aspect of the putter. I initially was drawn to it because of the 2 degrees of forward press but it fits very comfortably in my hands. I use a reverse overlap when putting. Now if it was all black it would be perfect.

I've been a bit MIA in this thread for the past few days. After getting back from a trip to lower Michigan (chronicled in my post about getting the DF3), I've been scrambling to prepare for another trip. Today, my boys and I left on a seven day, roughly 2,000 mile road trip. I'm posting from my phone, because I want to get my update in. We put in about ten hours of driving—but were able to stop to walk a quick nine right at the Mackinac Bridge.

This marks my second tracked nine-hole round since receiving my DF3: one at my home course and one at a course I play about every few years. 

The numbers so far: 

My summary of these numbers: 

• In short, I'm not making anything yet, but I'm barely missing anything either. That is to say, I literally haven't made a putt in these 18 holes longer than 5 feet, but I haven't three-putted once. 
• On the latter: my speed control (even on unfamiliar greens today) has been ridiculously good for me. I've had so many stress-free two putts from 20+ feet.
• I've also been (for me) uncharacteristically rock solid on short putts. By the end of the round today, I was even feeling confident that I was going to make those putts. That is a nice feeling. 
• I have reason to think that, if I begin stretching that confidence and intention to make into the 6-10' range, some makes are likely to follow. 
• I'm loving the feedback and feel. I'll have more to say later, but even with a harder ball, my DF3 (with the counterbalanced TPT shaft) only sounds pingy on grossly off-center strikes. I don't like high pitched putters. Using a Bridgestone today, it was almost more muted than I'd like—but given how the putts rolled, I wasn't bothered.

I have a DF 2.0 with a 2 degree barrel grip I have used for 2 plus years. 3 putts are on me not the putter. From 10 feet the line is pure and always close if not in. You do have to get use to the forward grip aspect and therefore the alignment which perceives a bit different than initial

line up. No intention of switching.

Without a doubt, after 4 rounds with the L.A.B. DF3 and indoor testing on a putting green, my confidence from 20 feet and in has increased significantly.  Five feet and within, is almost automatic (80%ish), I am very comfortable with a ten footer (50/50 ish) as well as 20 footer (20% ish).  Even though my gamer Evnroll, statistically is almost identical to the L.A.B., I feel the added benefit of focusing on my putting and doing putting drills has helped immensely.  Key thing, take my time, get read and break correct, setup properly, light grip and then let the putter do its thing with an almost pendulum like stroke.  Below are my 4 rounds with the L.A.B. DF3 versus the previous 4 rounds with the Evnroll Tourstroke compared to a 0 handicap.  Overall, 1 putts have increased and birdies have increased, while 3 putts have remained low, on average about 1 per round.  The caveat is that its only 4 rounds.  I'll be more convinced after about 20 rounds or so.  As far as my playing partners, they all want to try it and have been very impressed with it.  But, especially my wife who "used" my putter on about half the holes yesterday.  So, at the end of this test, I may very well be buying her a new L.A.B. putter for her bag, in pink of course.

Week 4   -  The Bottom line (Executive) summary -  May 17/2024

In this weeks adventures of the L.A.B. DF3, we have all the testers, starting on their individual testing of the putter.  There appears to be a learning curve associated with the L.A.B. as many of the testers adjust to it compared to their gamers.  Many questions from readers on set up, particularly head weight and grip choice, so I have summarized the choices of each of the testers below.

Please note: We strive to continue to improve and innovate to make this a better and interactive experience for the readers.  Do we set the bar high.  Absolutely.  However, I'm very fortunate to be working with a great group of uniquely talented testers. So without further ado, the Bottom Line:

@PJR Such great information and reviews here. Thank you all for your time and dedication!  I wanted to post a shout out to the customer service side of the house.

@GolfSpy SAM Holy smokes.  Took the Green Lantern out for its inaugural run today.  28 total putts, no three-putts, and 8 1-putts (including 2 birdies).  Seriously, this thing just flat-out performed for me today.  15-footer for par on 8 was a highlight, as was the 10' birdie putt (after, legit, the best shot of my life to get it onto the green from a BRUTAL position - more on that in the VCT thread) on 11.  Finished with a snaky 6-footer for birdie on 18 after sticking my approach from 100 yards.  My distance control and lag putting was EXCELLENT - had putts from 22, 25 and 50' that all were less than 12" from the hole when they stopped.  Anyway, thrilled to have had it out with me today.  There's definitely a SLIGHTLY different feel than the DF2.1, but that's not a bad thing - it's just different.  It feels slightly more solid at impact, and there's definitely less of a 'ting' if struck out of the toe

    

@CFreddie Great stuff gents - even as a tester, I need the weekly recap to see all of the amazing stuff that has happened over the week @Cfhandyman!  Biggest issue at this point - distance control (which was expected), so its something for me to dial in over the next few weeks.

Playing experience, insights and testing

@GolfSpy SAM When I tested two years ago, that was the biggest point of contention for a lot of the testers - it's a VERY different viewpoint when you're standing over the ball - the shaft going in behind the face.  For me, it just made it a little easier to focus on my alignment, as the shaft goes in directly behind the alignment aid - so yet another thing to help with my alignment.  I found that IF I tried to get my hands more involved, I was liable to try to manipulate the face, and if I just rock back and forth pendulum-style, the face of that putter stays dead square.

(Distance weighted at 45%, Impact Angle weighted at 45%, Path weighted at 10%).

From the data, you can see the greatest contributor to the lower DF3 score was distance control. I had more made putts from all distances with the DF3, but my misses were severe. Again, I do not see this as a negative because the distance control should come over time and practice.

I have a DF3 on order and looking forward to chunking this dog in the bag!  A few days ago I was at a PGA Super Store and rolled one for quite some time.  After that little excursion I was hooked like a bass in a pro tournament and I knew it was on like donkey kong! 

I chose blue as it's my favorite color with the Accra shaft and  Press Pistol 2 Degree Grip.

While I’ve only gotten one round with Chewie, my confidence is def climbing on the green.  Here is a quick snapshot of my one round summary, in comparison to previous rounds with my gamer (first shot is total rounds, second is last round). 

Interestingly enough, the biggest change to setup has been my swing thoughts - with my Scotty, I was usually paying close attention to my takeaway & stroke to ensure my face was on plane.  However, with the DF3, I’ve forced myself to “let the putter do the work”, which I believe has freed me up a bit. 
 

So very excited to get a couple more rounds under my belt soon, as well as some dedicated putting green and LM analysis. I’m planning to use a combination of Arccos and Stack Putting for my testing - should give me a great read of what’s working vs not.

Yea I went with a simple three dot alignment aid as I like the simplicity of it.  Too much going on the top and I'd be confused like old Elmer Jenkins trying to pick out a new coon pup for his Friday night hunts.

@ole gray, love it! Can't wait to see it and am very curious to see how you feel it performs for you on course! So far, I can safely say while getting used to The Black Mamba I feel, like @CFreddie mentioned, that it takes the variable of "twist" out of the equation. I find that the loose grip and the light on the thumbs approach, while taking a bit of getting used to, is working: let the club do the work and it's job! It's already laying flat, you just need to get it into the right striking position.

Awesome! Keep us updated with how you get along with it (especially initially)! You will definitely like the blue color! I think it’s even better in person than in the online photos!

I have rolled a few putts with it and couldn't put my finger on what was different.  Thankful for you guys that put words to the feels.
