Thanks for the information! The course I usually play is medium to soft, very rarely too firm because they water it ALL the time. Bunkers are also on the average side. Only hard or compacted if you're playing immediately after rain. Lips also aren't super high. The other thing I need to do is research the different grinds. I am very novice when it comes to understanding all of that as I've never played a wedge that's not in an irons set.

Vokey D grind. It has high bounce when you need it but is super versatile. I tried going back to the M grind recently and learned I prefer the D grind even on firmer lies!

I am curious as to how long you can expect top performance from an iron shaft combination if you play 150+ rounds a year and hit 50 to 100 balls a night in a simulator set up.

No such thing (in terms of affecting performance) unless the shaft is structurally compromised from poor manufacturing or a dent or something

So bad… Frustrating is putting it as kindly as I can. 84 (39/45). I’m not doing ANYTHING with my second shots, I have the chipping yips, and my brain is killing me! At this point I’m at a total loss because great range sessions aren’t translating on-course, and I really can’t afford a $200 an hour coach at this moment. I’m getting WORSE as the summer goes on. If it weren’t for driver and putter my game would be a complete failure.

Perhaps its your expectations that are driving things down. Stop paying for lessons and practicing for a few months. If you play, just have fun. Try to shape shots and hit trajectories that you don’t normally play. Play from the right side of your brain a little to see if it frees you up both mentally and physically

I can answer some of that with the info I got using my Old 9 degree metal shafted Drivers from Masterfit. AOA was level to 1 degree up swing with either driver. Dynamic Loft was about 13. Aren't all those numbers computer generated when your swinging into a big screen?

What type of launch monitor were you hitting on

    what was your ball speed

Don’t need dynamic loft, need launch angle

    and spin

I wonder what kind of smash Factor you have to put into the machines in order to carry the ball 230 yards with a 99 mph swing?

It’s more than smash. Launch angle and spin play a roll too.

Per trackman, if you can generate 140 mph ball speed (which you can do with 95mph club head speed and a great strike), have the right spin and launch, you can carry it 230

  6. I played again on Friday and the chipper got a good workout.  I went up and down with it 4 out of 5 times and I can confidently say that I may have gotten 3 out of 5 with just my regular/irons wedges.

It really is a fantastic option for someone like me who struggles maintaining or reducing loft on a club and really allows me to his more regular chips that run out rather than relying on a wedge to stop the ball with spin/decent angle.  I can now play pitch shots with my 52 or 58 and then chips with my ChipR.

What I do need to spend some more range time with is my new wedges.  Moving from 50/54/60 to 52/58 means my gap wedge goes about 5-10 yards shorter so I need to dial in my partial PW shots, my partial 52 shots and then see if I can get comfortable using my 58 on some full swings - something I really never did with my 60.  I am super comfortable taking less than full swings with my wedges, so it really isn't about comfort level so much as just learning my new yardages.  It shouldn't be too much of a learning curve and it will be worth the payoff for the added shots around the green I now have in my arsenal thanks to the ChipR

... Nice! You have a best guess as to how many up and downs out of 5 you would have had with your wedges/irons?

3 at the best based on the types of shots I had. Most of them were pretty straight forward and had lots of green to work with. That’s where I get in trouble with my wedges because I always force myself to carry the ball further than I should.

Still surprised by the Hideki rumors.  He just dosen't strike me as someone who would be drawn by the LIV offerings and party atmosphere.  But then again, someone dangling numbers approaching half a billion dollars is hard to ignore.  Golf in Asia is HUGE.  Getting Matsuyama, who has Tiger-like notoriety in those parts of the globe, will likely pay big dividends.

LIV is aligned with the Asian tour and landing Hideki is all about the Asian market

Read an interesting article this morning that suggested some of the “names” (Phil, DJ, Brooks, Bryson…) may have ownership stakes in their respective teams once this becomes a twelve team league. That might allow them to become the “Jerry Jones” (thought that was a good analogy) of their franchise and recruit and manage their squads. Might answer why some don’t seem to mind the “maybe no majors” thing. They’ve got other $$$ plans.

Rumor is Hideki is joining after the presidents cup and will be on a team of Japanese golfers that is owned/partially owned by Srixon.

I was wondering if you still had it! I read through the whole thread you posted - great stuff.  I'm excited to get out and get some reps in with it before I take it out to play for the first time.  So far, anecdotally in the back yard, I'm pleasantly surprised with how easy it is to handle and get the desired results.  I'll need to dial in the pace, as that's been my Achilles heel with my (not-square-strike) Wedge, so hopefully I can *pick the pockets* of my buddies soon 🙂

The extra swing weight is fantastic. I believe it’s D7

Sucks to see but also not a big surprise.

IMHO this is what I'd like to see with the Hogan brand... I would love to see a company like Cobra or Callaway or another OEM purchase the naming rights and do a special edition Ben Hogan series ever 3 or so years. Callaway may make the most sense as they were the ones who kept the Hogan original apex iron name, but just maybe for Cobra it could be a cost too and add a touch more Heritage to the brand.

Anyway just a thought. Outside of old old Hogan irons i never had a chance to hit any. Being a lefty there often weren't a ton of options.

Not too outside the box. Callaway already purchased Hogan golf in 2003. They bought the brand and kept most of the IP and then sold the Ben Hogan brand in 2012. In early 2014, Callaway launched their now industry leading Apex iron brands. Apex was a name attained when they bought Hogan

I can't imagine how bad my chipping has to be to carry a dedicated club for it.

So you only use one club?  Because I mean driver is only for driving. Putter only for putts. And I know you’re not carrying your lob wedge 250 off the tee…

  13. The negative? I didn’t have to use it once during my actual round this morning!

The positive? I chipped for about 15 minutes before my round and it was a joke. Just stupid east to use. My nemesis shot is when I’m just in the rough off the green with not a lot of green to work with.  First 3 chips i hit from this location all ended within 2 ft of the hole. Need to spend some more time on the longer chips to see where the top end of my range is with the putting grip/stroke and when in need to start using a more tradition chipping grip and motion.

Early feedback is extremely promising and my big take away from my round was there was no performance drop of from going from 50/54/60 to 52/58
