I bought a TM jet speed. 9.5 set to 8.... Huh?

Recommended Posts

I went to golfsmith today to retry the SLDR at higher lofts but again I couldn't hit it any further than the i20, and virtually every other club out there. So the fitter guy says hey, humor me and hit this jet speed. He set it to 8*. He told me to tee it up higher.

All the other clubs as a whole averaged 260-270. The jet speed balls averaged about 290' with one at 317!

I really didn't believe it so I went back and forth and everytime the jet speed was hit, it was 20-30 yards longer. It was carrying 260-270.

So I bought one, and immediately hit it against the rest, and still averaged 290ish.

Good news is that I have a 90 day happiness period, so if it turns out to not be real life awesome, I can trade it in for new wedges...

But, I can't figure out why it works for me at 8*, when lofting up seems to be the rage now...

Matrix Ozik IIRC, it is also long and mid weighted.  The entire JetSpeed idea is about swinging faster.  With a positive AoA and a flat swing I can completely see these kinds of results.

The Jetspeed looks like its simpler design would get the weight lower in the head than the SLDR with it's "rail" the weight rides on, so that would launch higher. 49 gram shaft with the added mechanical advantage at 46" will be faster/higher launch. Spin reduction is supposed to be this head's forte as well, but it has a shallower profile which also helps to launch higher. So even if you have and outside to in spin-inducing swing, this one should cut spin while still allowing adequate launch based on the other design elements and not needing to "loft up" as much.

Looks like a new version of the '07 Burner right down to the crown detail. When in doubt? Go back to one that worked for many with new "tech updates."

It shows the difference in swings. I hit a jet speed and couldn't find the center of the club with it. 46" coupled with 49 grams is not a good fit for me.

I remain very skeptical of the 45.5 for the SLDR but twice now I've nailed the you know what out of it. I was going to hit it on a launch monitor today but the opportunity to play has arisen.

Yeah, autocorrect got me lol. That was typed silkiest and autocorrected. And the reason I say that is someone swinging a stiff shaft at the speeds that fit stiff aren't swinging a club fast enough for those distances. It's physically impossible. That's why I say your swing is silky, because unless it's the smoothest ever and you've got a higher SS than stiff fits, you're not getting those distances.

Well to be fair he could according to TMag were he hitting the magic number of 17/1700. If a swing in the low 90s produces 270 than a swing in the high 90s, typical S flex, should produce 290. Correct?

Theoretically, yes, but I've yet to see anyone really hit those numbers.  I lean more toward the sim being off.  The ones here at the PGATSS, if you hit the ball in the correct spot on the screen, you get ungodly numbers.  There's a spot near the top of the screen, about a foot by 2 feet, that if you hit it the numbers go off the chart.  You hit it there and you're peeling off 4 bills with the numbers.

The guy that currently holds the world ballspeed record (set with the TEE 3 wood) Maurice Allen was in the store last night.  My buddy that they moved to the shoe department as a floor manager, but is their best fitter and club builder does all of his club work (he was building a few shafts for him last night) was there helping him out.  I was watching him hit balls, and he was consistently hitting the same spot on the screen.  He's a LD guy.  His numbers (after my buddy set the monitor up at sea level with no wind) were consistently 379-387 carry.  His ball speed consistently was over 200 MPH and his swingspeed was consistently in the 130's.  And he's a LD guy.  I don't buy it for a second that someone in the upper 90's was busting 300 when a guy that holds a world record for ball speed and has a very high swingspeed(30-40 MPH more) was merely 60-70 yards longer with it set to sea level and no wind.  Sorry, but unless someone hits the magic numbers (which again were calculated with a computer and not real life numbers) every time and has the best repeatable swing on the planet, it's not happening. Outdoors and on a TrackMan, FlightScope or similar, yeah, I believe it.  But indoors on a screen, nah, I don't believe it.

The swing speed was actually 107 for the best ball. I think the launch was around 15-16, and the spin was around 2200.

Normally a good swing speed for me is 102-103, with the i20.

Would another inch on the shaft make higher speeds? Seems like I remember 104-107 range.

Would those numbers fit the equation rook? I don't know how kiltered the monitor is, and I don't doubt it, even though I made him show me that is wasn't juiced.

But regardless of how the machine is set, it still was longer than everything else, significantly. Of course it's the storm of the century here today, the only time it's rained in California for the last 10 years, so I can't take it to a real range/ course to give it a real world spin.

And I have 90 days of satisfaction guaranteed or I can return it to golfsmith...

Oh, and I'm not sure what you mean when talking about hitting a "screen". There is a little machine with a red or green light in front of me, and we hit into a hanging net.

Unfortunately I don't know which machine it is. But last week I hit on a trackman, and it (golfsmith) was about 10 yards more than the trackman showed for same clubs.

Trackman shots averaged 260-270

Golfsmith shots averaged 270-280, except for the Jetspeed, which averaged 290+

My posts aren't meant to spout about how long I drive the ball, but rather that I found a club that seems to be considerably longer than the rest...for me. I don't doubt the machines lie to make us feel good!

At the golf course, I average 240-260, but I always play at the crack of dawn and it's always wet, for what it's worth.

But, if I can pick up 10-15 yards on average real world, whatever it is, I'm happy

Stock stiff? Either you have the silliest swing ever or they cranked the monitor.

Reason I asked is very often, the MFG stock shafts do not measure to what they say they are.  A Stiff stock shaft may actually just be a regular.  So stop by your local Dick's, Golfsmith or Golf Galaxy and ask them to check the shaft.

If you mean throw it on a frequency analyzer with a butt clamp, you're just getting a relative measure of butt end stiffness. It's the often times low kickpoint of stock shafts that make them feel even softer than their stated flex. I've butt frequencied a few over the years, and although they're usually borderline on CPM's, they usually fall just within the stated flex to the softer side of the spectrum. A 49g 46" shaft could certainly pick up some swing speed and head speed, but I'd be interested to see how long the honeymoon lasts and if accuracy suffers greatly. For years they keep going back and forth now lengthening and shortening the stock lengths. It seems to be the one constant in the "longer than ever" distance claims year to year. I find overlength shafts and distance claims to be a bit disingenuous by OEM's. It's like 2MPH more clubhead speed usually. I've noticed stock lengths creeping up there again when they had been getting a little more reasonable.

It really sounds like the Big Berth Alpha has limited options. Not just from this post but from other posts such as the loft options.

That's one of the few new ones I haven't tried. And I've always been a Callaway guy. Maybe I'll check it out tomorrow. Someone said they're lifting up as well. Is it considered "normal" as far as loft goes? Or is there gonna be an adjustment like the SLDR ?

Great question!

I was under the impression I needed a SLDR with the loft up. No amount of testing gave me better yardage than my i20 at 9.5

Hit the Jetspeed at 8* and got good gains, so I don't know the answer about lofting up. It could be that it works for some swings, but perhaps not all.

I hope to hit the JS tomorrow, it's rained for two days straight here in California. But I'm not complaining, we need it bad....
