It all depends on your gapping, or how far you hit each club. A pretty standard gapping in your longer clubs is 10-15 yards so find out how far you hit your 4 iron and then find a hybrid that fills your desired gap, which would be one you hit 10-15 yards further. Personally I always found if my highest iron was a 4 iron, a 4 hybrid would fill the gap perfectly but it will vary from golfer to golfer.

Who told you that?

On the surface yes but the first question should be what is the longest iron you can comfortably hit. Just because you have a four iron doesn't mean it's that. Conversely you may be one of those players who hits long irons well and you should look at adding 3 iron.

Don't assume... get used to what you have and see how it goes. Unless the person who told you was your teaching pro.

This. I'd suggest going to a fitter, finding out what you hit and going from there. I grew up on a 5 wood but I wouldn't recommend that plan unless your pro agrees.

I third what RevKev said ;). Do you know how far you hit each club? Knowing your distance can help figure out what you need on the bottom and top end of your clubs.

This is great advice. I took my four iron out of the bag and opt instead for a 5-rescue with a shortened shaft and a 3-hybrid. I know based on my distance that the only time I will need anything longer than my 5-iron is if I get too much movement on my driver, ending up short and in the rough--enter the 5-rescue. Oh, and the occasional long par 3.

especially with different brands having their own definition on how strong of lofts every 4 or 5 iron/hybrid club is. Just have to gap everything.
