therod
Looking at this driver, and reading the article here, makes me think about getting a new driver this spring. My current gamer is a Fly-Z, and that was the 1st oem driver I've bought in years. My back-up is an older PowerBilt AirForceOne, which is still a good stick. And long. But this new F8 more than interests me. And I think for a long time now, Cobra has been underappreciated, especially in the driver market. Yes, they won the most wanted award a few years ago. But they still aren't that big in the market. And they are always less $$$ than Taylormade, Callaway, Ping, or Titleist. Think I need to find me a demo day or go to a fitter this spring. Until then, I will just drewl...
GolfSpy_APH
Funny I was thinking something similar. I currently use the fly z+, but will likely put it head to head with the ping G400 among a few others and see how it goes! Really would like to see the all black model, may be a bit more appealing. chisag
... The F8 might be the most excited I have been about the release of a new driver in a long time. I have been a Cobra fan and played several of their drivers in succession with the Pro S, the Pro S9.1, ZL and later, maybe my all time favorite the Fly Z. I have talked quite a bit with Mike Yagley Director of R&D and Testing and he is one smart guy and one of the reason Cobra has had so much success with their drivers. Passionate about golf clubs and who doesn't love that? Seeing all the new tech of the F8 I have little doubt it will be an improvement over the Fly Z and F6 I played for 3 seasons. How much is what I look forward to finding out. Tom Olsavsky, another VP of R&D was one of those responsible for the slot in the sole of the RBZ that changed fairway wood performance and it is now standard in some form on almost all fairway woods, and if he thinks the F8+ will outperform the LTD, that is also very exciting. ... So after years of playing Cobra drivers, and a one year departure for the SLDR, last year I switched to an Epic because it was longer than my Fly Z, mostly due to reduced spin and I loved the dense sound/feel. But I just have a feeling the F8 is gonna bring Cobra back into the driver conversation in a big way for many players. I love the look of the Black crown (most old school golfers prefer that color) but I am happy to see them offer the Nardo Silver, a hot color amongst the younger players. Good move. chisag
Is the milled face just to promote better feel like in putters? ... It allows Cobra to get closer to the max legal limit CT limit which equates to higher ball speeds. Tour Pro's have their drivers checked by the OEM selecting those driver faces closest to 257, and while the legal limit is 239, with a + or - tolerance of 18 the Pro's push the envelope and get to 257. In theory the milled faces of the F8's are much closer to 257 which was difficult in the past because OEM's could not take a chance on driver tolerances over the limit, so they were closer to 239 and under. I am not an engineer and do not know how much this makes a difference for an average golfer with a swing speed of 85-100, but the theory is of course, longer drives. Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... therod
My guess is (being an engineer) that most amateurs would not be able to find a difference between 239 and 257. That really is a minute difference, in the grand scheme. Most amateurs would also not be able to tell the difference between drivers years ago when Callaway had the non-conformer that they marketed. The longest-hitting ams, maybe. The average joe playing 18 only on the weekend? Not likely, in my opinion. It's been years since I was in the materials world of engineering, and did more of that in college than in the real world, but my instinct is ,most wouldn't be able to feel or see a difference.
