mpatrickriley
Kirke had himself a round today! We played a quick nine this morning. I've noted before that I've laid out a course for Kirke according to the yardage guidelines from US Kids. Playing the back today, his holes are: 10 110 4 11 140 4 12 120 4 13 130 4 14 110 4 15 110 4 16 40 3 17 100 4 18 200 5 Through the first seven holes, he was two over. He had hit six greens in regulation. He two-putted the first six holes, and then on the par 3, 3-putted. Hole 17 was a bit of a disappointment. It's a short downhill par 4 for him (as it is for the adults). He hit a good drive, but then chunked a wedge before chipping on and two-putting for a bogey. Hole 18 is a tough one for him. It's not just the length: it also climbs uphill the whole way, and there's a ditch that's perfectly positioned to catch any second shot from him. This forces him to lay up, making it hard to reach the green in less than 4. He ended up with a double-bogey. All told, though, he shot a 41 with 19 putts today, and just whooped me by 8 strokes (I had a mess of a round). It was a lot of fun. mpatrickriley
Last night was the opening scramble for our local men's league. I brought Kirke along. Teams are drawn randomly, but (of course) I keep Kirke with me as a fifth player (it's a very informal event). He knows upfront that, for sake of pace of play, he only gets to take a turn when he has a realistic chance of reaching the green (within about 75 yards or so). The teams were a random draw, but happily, my dad drew the same group as Kirke and me: The kid saved our bacon on multiple holes with his chipping and putting. His best shot was on our last hole (number 2 on the course, because of a shotgun start). I hit a fun tee shot cutting the corner on a short par 4, leaving us with about 35 or so yards in. Unfortunately, we had a pretty nasty lie: a sparse patch of broad leaf weeds on top of bare earth. Kirke went first, and with his nine iron, put us to about six feet. One of the guys on our team offered a dollar bet that none of us would beat that, but not only am I not a betting man, I wouldn't ever bet against Kirke Sure enough, Kirke's shot was the best one. All in all, a fun night. sirchunksalot, JohnSmalls, toehold57 and 2 others 5 Quote TS3 9.5°, Tensei Blue CBX E722 16.5°, Tensei AV RAW Blue 65 S Epic Super Hybrid 19°, Aerotech Steel Fiber FC HYB S C722 22°, Ventus Blue 8S CBX Iron-Wood 25°, Project X HZRDUS Black 6.0 Epic Forged 7 27° 639 CB, Aldila NV 95 Graphite, 7–PW Diamond Tour Inazone 3.0 50°, 54°, 58°, Aldila NV 95 Graphite DF3, Counterbalanced 37", TPT shaft, Garsen Quad Tour 17" Full WITB with pictures

mpatrickriley
Another new personal best for Kirke! Same back nine yardages as above: today's round was a 37 with 14 putts. Best hole was 15. mpatrickriley
A couple updates on Kirke. I posted another thread about the set of Cobras that we got him for his birthday. While the clubs look really nice, we've found that they are very heavy; my opinion is that they simply aren't properly designed for young golfers. Swapping out the driver with a new one from US Kids Golf has made an enormous difference, not just in launch monitor numbers, but on the course as well. As an example, hole 4 at our course is a par 5, playing 200 yards for Kirke. In addition to its length, it present a challenge for him in that there's a ditch that's about 110 yards from his tee: With his Cobra driver, that ditch was always a concern on his second shot: he'd typically hit a drive to the end of the fairway, and then need to make a good strike with his FW or hybrid to ensure he'd clear the ditch on his second shot. With his new driver, he (for the first time ever) cleared the ditch on his drive (it bounced over). That's a 110–115 yard drive, which is big for him. And to top it off, he hit a crisp FW to reach the par 5 green in two, setting up a stress-free two-putt birdie for him. Overall, he had a great round going again yesterday: 2 over through 13, when we had to cut the round short. I've been marveling recently at the flexibility of his swing. Exhibit A: Exhibit B: a screen capture of the position at the pinnacle of his follow through. Don't try this at home: And finally, I love this shot of his release: MattF, THEZIPR23, JohnSmalls and 3 others 6 Quote TS3 9.5°, Tensei Blue CBX E722 16.5°, Tensei AV RAW Blue 65 S Epic Super Hybrid 19°, Aerotech Steel Fiber FC HYB S C722 22°, Ventus Blue 8S CBX Iron-Wood 25°, Project X HZRDUS Black 6.0 Epic Forged 7 27° 639 CB, Aldila NV 95 Graphite, 7–PW Diamond Tour Inazone 3.0 50°, 54°, 58°, Aldila NV 95 Graphite DF3, Counterbalanced 37", TPT shaft, Garsen Quad Tour 17" Full WITB with pictures

PlaidJacket
I enjoy reading about Kirke and his progress. Here's something you might want to consider for him or anyone for that matter. I'm definitely saving that file. As it stands right now, Kirke is just shy of the chart in the pdf. His longest drives get out just past 100 yards, but he's probably carrying it (at the longest) around 85. We've been using another chart from US Kids to build his course this season: http://www.uskidsgolf.com/tournaments/local-tours/course-setup Based on Kirke's age, US Kids suggests a total 9-hole yardage of 1,100 yards. That's going to jump to 1,500 next season, which is right at the suggested yardage from the pdf you sent for a 100-yard carry with driver; that should be exactly where Kirke is next season. mpatrickriley
This morning, I brought both my sons with me: @Kirke and Christopher. Christopher is much more a normal kid than Kirke; he isn't quite the natural athlete, nor does he have the compulsive drive to practice for hours on end. What he does have, however, is brute strength. Christopher is only 4 (turns 5 in October), but he's already (gulp!) 56lbs. To put that in perspective, that's the median weight for 8 year old boys. He outweighs Kirke by over 10 pounds already. The last time we brought him in for a checkup, the doc projected him out to 6'4". I'm 5'10". In other news, I'm starting a GoFundMe for his teenage food bills. He hasn't spent nearly the time at the course that Kirke has, but he came out this morning and played some holes. He'll gain some touch over time, but when he gets ahold of one, he already nearly hits it as far as Kirke does: PAgolfer2017, M. I have no idea if my little one will even like golf, but Kirke looks like he will be needing a caddie soon. Are you two trying the drive /chip/putt? Yes, this will be Kirke's first year. The first round is next Thursday. Unfortunately, I (inadvertently) scheduled our church's VBS next week, so I won't be able to be there with him. My parents will be taking him to the site (about 4.5 hours away from here). I'll definitely keep everyone here posted as to his results. Each child's age bracket is determined by his age at the time of next year's Masters, so Kirke is in the 7–9 year old division. With him being only six, I'm not expecting him to be able to hang in the driving category. Check out some of the results pages: https://www.drivechipandputt.com/results It's amazing to me how many kids in the boys 7–9 division are hitting drives approaching 300 yards (for reference, 250 yards is 20 points). If Kirke absolutely catches one and gets a very generous bounce and roll, he might get to 140. But chipping and putting? I think he can hang with anyone. EDIT 7/31: It somehow didn't occur to me until today (a good week after I originally posted this) that the 20 points is cumulative for the three drives. So 20 points would be three 7-point drives, or about 125 yards each. downlowkey, M. He's just figured out that if he lays his wedge open, he can hit little flops around the green: Also, he (unprompted) made a really astute observation on our drive home: that his driver clubhead speed in mph (just over 60) is higher than his weight in lbs (around 45). That might explain his off balance finish. golfertrb, PAgolfer2017, JohnSmalls and 3 others 6 Quote TS3 9.5°, Tensei Blue CBX E722 16.5°, Tensei AV RAW Blue 65 S Epic Super Hybrid 19°, Aerotech Steel Fiber FC HYB S C722 22°, Ventus Blue 8S CBX Iron-Wood 25°, Project X HZRDUS Black 6.0 Epic Forged 7 27° 639 CB, Aldila NV 95 Graphite, 7–PW Diamond Tour Inazone 3.0 50°, 54°, 58°, Aldila NV 95 Graphite DF3, Counterbalanced 37", TPT shaft, Garsen Quad Tour 17" Full WITB with pictures
golfertrb
That's so great. My eldest son (now 24 years old) really enjoyed playing with me when he was a little boy and I was amazed at how good he was. When he got older he lost interest for a few years but now he is my primary playing partner and we love it. He plays once a week and never practices and he's a 3.1. I have at times thought he could have taken golf farther than he did but he doesn’t have a passion for it. He loves playing with me and he enjoys it but not the way I always have but it doesn't matter. Playing with my boys is one of my greatest joys and I really enjoy the updates!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk GolfSpy_BNG, M. mpatrickriley
First round of Drive, Chip, and Putt is this Thursday. I'm bummed I won't be able to be there with him; we ended up scheduling our church's VBS this week. But that means my parents get to go with him, and that's a good thing. I'm hoping my dad takes some good video. Took Kirke to the course this afternoon for a practice session for chipping and putting. I'll keep everyone posted on his results. mpatrickriley
Kirke rolled out this afternoon with my dad and mom, headed south for the first round of Drive, Chip, and Putt. His tee time tomorrow is 9:50 Central Time. I'm eager to hear his results, and even more, to hear from my dad on how Kirke handles the pressure of an actual formal competition for the first time. I've seen Kirke hit in front of an audience before. At the local kids' clinic our course holds, the instructor will often ask Kirke to come in front of everyone (sometime over 100 people) and hit shots, and it just doesn't faze him in the slightest. It's almost as though it brings him an extra layer of focus and (even) swagger (which needs to be managed). But this could be different. It's certainly one of those times that show how useful sports can be as a tool in parenting, to see what my son is feeling on the inside. I haven't before watched any of the Drive, Chip, and Putt, but I'm struck (in preparation) with the volatility of the scoring. The chipping and putting is so key, because of the massive dropoff in points. Make a putt, get 25. Miss within a foot, 20. Miss within 2', 15. And so on. Outside 5', a point. So having perfect dead weight is crucial. My dad promised to get some video and to text me updates, so I'll let everyone here know as soon as I can.
