How to Stop Skying My Drives?

Recommended Posts

I am wondering what adjustments I need to make to stop skying my drives. My last round a lot of my ball flight was high and short, or high with a curve.

I have my tilt in set up, ball near my left heel and trying to swing up on the ball (Maybe I am still hitting down on it). I made some adjustments moving the ball further back, teeing up lower, but while it changed now and then, it did not fix my problem. Any ideas?

My driver is adjustable too, is this something I can do to fix this? or is it purely set up and swing?

Thank you

The good Doctor will fix almost any strike pattern problem. Spray face hit a few balls, dimples will be apparent. Wipe face, spray again and try making adjustments until you get strikes you are happy with.

Once you get good strikes you can make some swing improvements. There are many different reasons why you could be hitting it high, but this is usually a good starting point.

Sounds like a swing issue. Just because you have tilt in setup if you aren’t swinging with a proper sequence you will compensate somehow and more than likely you are coming over the top and hitting down.

As mentioned above spraying the face will show you where contact is. Video of your swing will show you how you are actually swinging launch monitor will tell you what your swing is doing and what’s it’s impact is on the ball flight

@NateyeightNo quick internet swing fix here, since it could be due to a number of reasons. I can share with you my issue when I sky the ball is when I don't pay attention to ball position or tee height. It happens generally once every 2 or 3 rounds for me and generally when I'm on automatic mode and not paying attention. So part of my routine on the tee box is to be  very precise on tee height and where the ball is relative to my lead foot.

FYI in addition to the foot powder suggested by others, it  wouldn't take much to do a close-up slo mo video of your swing (driver striking the ball).

@Nateyeight For me I know that when I sky the ball it is because I hit down on the ball too much with a steep swing. (At first it was counterinutitive to me, like if I am hitting down shouldnt it be lower than if I were hitting up on the ball???) Are you getting marks on the crown of your driver? As everyone else mentioned, check your tee height and impact location with foot spray (I use target brand, any brand as long as it is the spray that dries white) and also get a slow motion video of your swing face on so you can see what your swing looks like. Ask a buddy or bring a tripod to the range. Get on a launch monitor if you can as it can also help you identify the issue. I see that you have Los Angeles as a location. Go to the Roger Dunn in Santa Ana if you can as they have a lot of GC Quad bays and you can just hop on for free!

slow motion video is generally the way to go, just have a fiend to take a video of a few swing, bring it to slow motion and compare.

I have the same problem when I drive indoor at my friend's house, I tend to have my shoulder at same height to avoid hitting wall and ceiling when driving inside instead of having them like it should be. Also outside I move the ball a little more forward than inside, again to avoid contact with the wall and ceiling. It change my angle of attack and ALSO for some reason allow me to hit the ball more in the center of the club face. When I drive outside, I rarely hit them sky high due to that.
