Londo
This is my first offseason after playing a ton this year and I am truly missing the game. It is going to be a long ~4 months- I have a indoor putting mat, can do some small chipping practice too. May look to take one trip down south this winter but what some of yall do during the winter to scratch the golf itch when courses close and snow is on the ground? sirchunksalot and edingc
Tom the Golf Nut
When I lived up in the North East the courses closed Thanksgiving weekend. That's when I would focus on my short game. I would put a 4 foot and an 8 foot ladder in the yard and try to hit over them. I would either use an upside down open umbrella stuck in the ground or my kids hula hoops as targets. Even when the ground was snow covered I would shovel off an area on the grass and do the same thing. Before I had an actual golf mat I used a welcome mat. I just couldn't do it for more than an hour. But I would go out for a while, go in to warm up, and go back out again. I wouldn't over dress because I didn't want a restricted swing. Putting mats are always good indoors. sirchunksalot, Londo and edingc 3 Quote Driver, TSi 1 S Flex 3 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 7 Wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 Hybrid King Tec MMT R Flex Irons, Vice VGI01 Mitsubishi Wiz 60-gram regular flex (6 - PW) VGW01, 50 Degree. edingc
My wife always jokes with me because I get grumpy around mid-September when I go from playing three or four times per week to once per week if I'm lucky. Putting mat and foam balls got me through the last few winters at home. I also setup some patio furniture cushions and could chip from the carpet into them working on low point control. Before this year, once a week I tried to get to the nearest heated range to hit a bucket or two. The simulators in my area are way too expensive to do every week, but this place only charges $12 for a large bucket with heat. Downside was the 35 minute drive. This winter I finally got a hitting net setup so I don't need to drive anywhere. I'm lucky to have 10 foot ceilings in my garage so I can take full swings. If you don't have that, then you might be more limited. But it's better than nothing! DiscipleofPenick
There are a ton more simulator places now than ever before in Cleveland, so those are a popular option. Though I felt like going to the sim last winter screwed up my swing for a few months of the season, till I went and got a lesson. I was coming across the line something terrible, but the sim read all my shots as straight and the the driver as a push. My driver setting has an open face and I swing a little inside-out to promote the draw so I think the sim was just picking up the club path only. Maybe they were jank and I should try a nicer place. Problem is an hour of sim time costs as much as 18 holes around here. Anyway, I bought a BirdieBall mat for indoor putting practice, and a lot of the goat pastures stay open all year. My plan is every time it's over 40, no snow on the ground, and I have free time is to go get 9 holes. I think that even though I may be hitting 2+ more clubs, I can watch the ball flight and still know exactly what my swing is doing. I did the same when we lived in northwest Ohio during the winter. However, I did find an outdoor driving range that had heated bays - you might want to look into that as well. russtopherb
Indoor sims, putting target practice, slow-mo swings or partial swings to work on takeaway, chipping with foam balls, the usual. Oh and a bunch of club ho'ing. Like, a LOT of club ho'ing. That, plus a good amount of planemate half-swings this year in the basement. Plus lots of drooling over the new equipment releases and longingly looking to my bag in the back corner of the office.... *sigh* I think it's time to move down south. Kenny B
I'm fortunate to live in a desert-like climate. We don't get much rain and therefore in the winter we don't get much snow. Some winters can be bad, but most winters are pretty mild. Temps in 30-40º range; if the temp isn't going to get above freezing during the day the courses are open. Different golf though... lots of ground time on drives and approaches have to be short of the green. But Hey! It's golf... sorta. The range, off mats, and the pitching and putting green are open. I also have a hitting bay and a birdie ball putting green in a room behind my garage, so if I don't feel like going out I can work on making better ball contact. Of course, there is the annual January golf trip to somewhere warm! Londo
Thank you for all the great responses and ideas! May end up setting up a hitting bay with my brother in law in his garage and if that goes well we could get a launch monitor as well. Unfortunately, it looks as though the nearest indoor course sims or outdoor driving ranges is about an hour away but will likely set up a few day trips there!
