MattWillGolf
I got Nemo out this morning for 9 holes. I was very pleased with how my putting is improving. Especially distance control. My 2-putts are finishing closer to the hole after the 1st putt. I also had a 1-putt of 18-feet today. I continue to use the DF3 from off of the green. My only three putt was from a skulled wedge that left me putting downhill from over 30 feet. It didn't end well. The numbers today. One 3-putt. Six 2-putts and two one putts. My mantra with the DF3 is point and let the putter do the work. "Calm hands". golfsh00ter
Terrific thread and contributors here, been reading it for the last month or so. I got fitted into a 32.5”/72deg Link.1 last summer with Accra shaft by Club Champion. I had never heard of LAB, but was the most consistent with it during the fitting process so I decided to pull the trigger on a $750 putter. They built it with my grip (GolfPride Tour SNSR 140cc - which weighs 130g). My Link.1 experience was that it was a champ for helping me to start my putts on target and on-line consistently, almost point and shoot like. But I struggled mightily with pace control and a lack of feel. I went back for another fitting and the laser tool showed that I was presenting the face loft too upright (green laser dot was not even hitting the wall). Not ideal and not a good fit for me…. And the more I researched pace control the more info I came across about putter weight, so I weighed the Link and it was 607g with my preferred grip on it. Vs my research saying “ideal” putter weight should be in the 530-545g range. I know the grip added ~50g but it would still weigh almost 550g. Anyways, I ended up getting fitted into an Edel Array F3 putter and I’m much better with it. I wanted to like the DF3 but I can’t get past the negative loft (in my case) and the hands forward press look at address. Maybe someday I’ll give whatever the newest LAB model is a try, because I’m a believer. But I do wonder if the heavier putter weights and relatively upright fixed 2deg putter loft that LAB’s technology currently limits you to are also negatively impacting others? Did anyone else struggle with pace? Cfhandyman
Middler
^^^ Interesting. Made me go weigh my two putters. Clearly the Link.1 is very different than the DF3, but my 35" DF3 w Accra shaft & Press Pistol 2º grip (58g) is 497g. My 35" Evnroll ER5B with P2 Touch Tour grip (85g) is 519g. I know I am sensitive to weight as I used to have an Evnroll EV5.3 and I increased the weights (added 30g w 2x29g weights) in the sole assuming it would help me keep the putter on path. It hurt my distance control and didn't help path, so I went back to the stock weights (2x14g). I am sure I would never get along with a 607g putter, but there is no universal right answer - to each his/her own. Did anyone else struggle with pace? Thanks for the compliment and you have a very interesting putter story. Pace is not something that I struggled with throughout this test. Yes, I have hit a putt poorly that lead to leaving putts well short or long, but it was more due to incorrect reads/poor distance guessing. I do have the counterbalance option on the DF3 and right about the time the DF3 test was announced, MyGolfSpy came out with an article about counterbalance putters and indicated that for the right person, counterbalance could be something that considerably helps with pace control. I don't know if this was true for me, but I do know that it made the transition from my armlock putter to the DF3 much smoother. The counterbalance version also doesn't have the integrated shaft lean like the Press II series of grips. All this to say, if you're interested in giving the DF3 a go again, maybe the counterbalance version would be something to toss in the hat. Did anyone else struggle with pace? Not an official tester but I've had issues in the past with my DF 2.1 and speed control, specifically having a hard time getting the ball to the cup. Not sure if it was the face being soft, or the stability tour shaft, but it was a struggle and I would always need to make a conscious effort to hit it hard. The DF3 feels firmer off the face, and overall the putter feels more solid with the Accra shaft in practice. Cfhandyman
The Lab rat continues to impress and is slowly turning into a long range bombing threat from anywhere on the green. Yesterday, a 35 footer for birdie. In almost 25 rounds of play with the L.A.B. DF3, a number of 20+ foot putts made. My longest to date, a 68 footer. Other side of the green, it felt like I was putting from a different area code and all I was trying to do, is get it somewhere close to the hole. In all honesty, I knew I was looking at at least a three putt. To my utter shock and amazement, the closer it got to the hole, I thought hey this looks pretty good and it kept rolling and rolling straight into the cup. Still can't believe that one. Overall, although make percentage from 20 plus feet is low (< 2%), its not zero. But it does show that if you get the read, the line and the speed right, it has a chance. Cfhandyman
Special Edition - MGS Tester of the Week – Rearviewmirror Profile In the MyGolfSpy Tester of the week for the L.A.B. DF3, we are making a slight change. We have highlighted all the official testers and moderators for the testing. In a change of pace, we are now highlighting some of the unofficial testers for their outstanding contributions. This weeks, Tester of the week is none other than @Rearviewmirror. A special and sincere thanks to @Rearviewmirror for consenting to this as well as providing the content and pictures. Editors comment: He provides a very unique perspective and overview in that he has used and played with the L.A.B. Link.1, L.A.B. Mezz and now the L.A.B. DF3 and his experiences with each. Enjoy. Where’s he from: @Rearviewmirror grew up in Ireland (where golf is public, plentiful, and cheap), and has lived in the Washington DC area since 2018. He plays most of his golf on muni's, occasionally splashing out for golf at special courses in MD/VA and CA. Who he is: He has played golf since he was 13 years old, mostly hovering around an 18 handicap as a child. He got back into golf after a lengthy lay off in 2023, and has gotten down to around a 15 handicap. While putting was a real strength as a child, Since getting back into golf, putting has been the most inconsistent part of his game. While he still has deep emotional attachment to his 1998 Scottie Cameron Tei3, the stats said it was time to make a change. Current testing: He started out his LAB journey in October of 2023 with a Link.1 and while it massively improved his lag distance control, he had a hard time finding consistency inside of 8 feet. After rolling the Mezz.1 at a PGA Superstore, he took the plunge and switched to a mallet for the first time ever. Unfortunately this reversed the problem - with everything inside 8ft becoming automatic, and lag putts becoming really challenging. At long last, he made the switch to the DF3. Conclusions: The DF3 has provided the "best of both worlds" for him - combining the lag speed control of the Link.1 and the reliability inside 8ft. Without doubt, putting has become a strong point in his game again - so much so that currently putting only contributes 8% to his "areas for improvement" across the rest of his golf game - the DF3 is definitely staying in his bag! mpatrickriley
Yesterday, I went to the course with three of our children. We walked nine holes together, and they also got in some practice for their upcoming first round of Drive, Chip, and Putt for the season. During the round, I believe I had a first for my DF3: the first time I finished a round gaining strokes putting on a scratch golfer. Really didn't do anything "impressive" during the round. I had one chip-in and left a few other short game shots to kick-in range, and the DF3 obliged by kicking them in. The three mid-range putts (12, 20, and 20) were all solid; the second 20-footer caught the upper lip and spun out. The final hole, I had a long uphill putt that I left about 4' past the hole. The comeback was a delicate, downhill left-breaker that could easily roll further away than I started if missed, but I dropped it in the center of the cup. 12 total putts for nine holes. But when I got to the course, I realized I left my DF3 in my basement, where I had been practicing on the ExPutt. <sniffles> jbern, Cfhandyman, MattWillGolf and 1 other 4 Quote TS3 9.5°, Tensei Blue CBX E722 16.5°, Tensei AV RAW Blue 65 S Epic Super Hybrid 19°, Aerotech Steel Fiber FC HYB S C722 22°, Ventus Blue 8S CBX Iron-Wood 25°, Project X HZRDUS Black 6.0 Epic Forged 7 27° 639 CB, Aldila NV 95 Graphite, 7–PW Diamond Tour Inazone 3.0 50°, 54°, 58°, Aldila NV 95 Graphite DF3, Counterbalanced 37", TPT shaft, Garsen Quad Tour 17" Full WITB with pictures

mpatrickriley
Another interesting instructional video from Sam Hahn of L.A.B., just posted today: I'd be interested in asking the other testers (and other L.A.B. users): what (if anything) are your feels/focuses when putting with a L.A.B.? I should note here: all my work with the ExPutt confirms something I've known for years: my path is garbage. I'm regularly about 5° out to in (can be more on short putts, typically less on longer putts). I think it was @cnosil who perceptively asked how that kind of stroke would work with L.A.B.'s technology. So far, the answer has been "just fine." For why it works, engage with me in a bit of imaginative speculation. I think most of us on this thread know what the Revealer is. If not, you can get a quick peek here (it is essentially a frame that allows the putter to rotate freely while being swung): The key, if I'm thinking correctly, is that the DF3 (and others) are lie angle balanced, not path balanced. So long as you maintain the lie angle of the DF3, you could in theory move the Revealer in any number of convoluted paths without making the DF3 start spinning. So (to land this discussion) that tends to be my main "swing thought" when putting with the DF3: maintain the lie angle. My main setup thought is to try to have the feel of the my forearms being in a line with the shaft; I have a tendency to raise my arms (and thus, the lie angle). Interesting question @GolfSpy MPR - I honestly haven't even thought of trying to "maintain" the lie angle. I tend to overthink standing over a putt, so I've been consciously trying to "not think". Sam's explanation of "slicing cheese" totally makes sense - I'm going to try this method on my practice green this week. Thanks for sharing!!!
