My Titleist Vokey Fitting Experience

Okay MGS nation as the heading suggests, this post is all about sharing my fitting experience from yesterday (5/16) for the SM10 Vokey wedges. As I mentioned in a previous post LINK there are 3 different ways to get fitted. For this test, I was contacted by a regional fitting specialist from Titleist named Josh. He travels around to different golf clubs in our area providing his expertise in fitting players into the best equipment for their swing.

IMG_5857.JPEG.2d8680f0c6e867c509a03771a6479661.JPEG

TLDR - The Titleist fitting with Josh was awesome. After a brief warm up I began making some swings. The Trackman was recording as I was using different degree/bounce/lofted wedges based on the recommendations from Josh and the special Vokey software he was using. I made full swings, pitch, flop, and bunker shots and each result provided more feedback to ultimately get me in the right set. Josh used his expertise in fitting as we went and explained every part of the process along the way, and after 45 minutes I walked away excited about the new Vokeys destined for my bag. I highly recommend this fitting experience if you get the opportunity.

For those interested in knowing more details read on!

I arrived at The Country Club of the North (love the name) about 15 minutes prior to my appointment. My fitter, Josh, was waiting underneath his tent surrounded by an amazing array of equipment.

This was my first fitting experience with a fitter of any type so I was glad to be there to soak it all in! After some introductory conversation Josh asked me to get warm with my PW and watched my swing and turf interaction. I was feeling good and my ball striking was pretty solid.

Titleist provides a Trackman system to its fitters and couples that with custom Vokey wedge fitting software that analyzes the player’s swing arc and impact tendencies. To get started, Josh had me hit a full 52 degree with an 08 bounce. After 1 shot the system beeped and Josh took that club out of my hand and handed me another with more bounce. After another couple shots, he asked me some questions about the feel and the tendencies I have. We then moved into a 56 degree and took some more full swings. Eventually Josh was swapping that out as well and he invited me to take a look at what he was seeing.

IMG_5848.JPEG.691d7f908a9330ddbb289842e0de4129.JPEG

We then went to the 60 degree with a bounce and grind that was recommended by the software. This is where it started to get really interesting and tailored specifically to me. I made full, pitch, and flops shots as instructed and those results then shifted the recommendations for the 56 and 52 degree options I hit previously. Now here is where the human element shines. I was potentially matching up with a D grind or an M grind both in slightly different bounces. To narrow things down Josh recommended we step away from the tech and hit a few out of the rough under his watchful eye. We then continued by going to the bunker and around the green shots in the adjacent practice area.

I love my lob wedge. I use it often. In fact, I haven’t had a sand wedge in my bag for months b/c sadly it was lost and never returned. So I have a gap between 60 and the PW. Josh, knowing that the spot in my bag was empty, asked me to make several shots with PW again. This time he paid close attention to my carry, spin, and landing angles. He put a 48 degree, 10 bounce, F grind in my hand and asked me to make a couple shots. I easily flew 10-15 yds further and boy did the strike feel good off the face. After the 2nd shot I said “That was perfect” and immediately Josh smiled and said “That’s what I love to hear.”

IMG_5853.JPEG.ac84db9694bdee869645bbd1a514b07e.JPEG

Based on this revelation we tweaked the recommendations to better match the gapping and we confidently chose the following:

  • 48.10 F - this effectively replaces my stock PW b/c it flies further with more spin and the bounce is better for my swing.
  • 54.10 S - this bridges the gap and will become an all around utility club from approx 100 yards and in. I aim to use this one around the green, out of bunkers, and on longer greenside pitches
  • 60.08 M - the grind on this one is Bob Vokey’s favorite and the most versatile. It performed well on flop and high sand trap shots during the fitting. Full shots will net me about 75-80 yards carry.

I had a great time with this fitting. Josh was awesome! His years of skills and knowledge were evident and his explanations and demonstrations were easy to understand. The Titleist equipment on display was impressive and he was so gracious to let me stick around after the fitting to ask more questions and hit some more balls. Had a blast!

Kudos to Titleist for hiring great fitters like Josh to usher golfers through their impressive Vokey fitting process. It was more than I anticipated and shows why the Titelist name carries so much weight in golf equipment.

The next step is the ordering process!

Fitting is scheduled for next Friday! I will be sure to post an update once that is done.  Here is what the virtual fitting tool put me in for reference (I'll also add this to my intro)

Mine was the same, plus this is what I used in my SM7's for a couple years.

I'm coming back to Vokey's with new SM9's and using the same 54/10/S and 58/8/M you show above. It worked really well in my SM7's so I'm giving it a go again. The online tool had me in a D grind in the 58, but I'm not steep nor is the turf here really soft. So I'm sticking with the M.

This sounds awesome! Wish I had looked into Titleist fittings years ago. I wouldn't have left Vokey's if I had. But I just picked up new SM9's (on sale) and so I'm back. Seems all I hear about Titleist fittings are stories of awesomeness!! F/S/M were the grinds I played as well, now it'll be S/M since my GW will be a set wedge.

Nope. When I did the online tool I made some assumptions on the gapping that were unnecessary. The grinds and bounces were kinda close. That is the benefit of the fitting. I 100% would have had overlap if I had gone with the online tool.

This is what the online selector had me in.

Did they use range or premium balls during the fitting?

The club provided Taylormade range balls. Not sure of the quality but they were good enough!

Nope. When I did the online tool I made some assumptions on the gapping that were unnecessary. The grinds and bounces were kinda close. That is the benefit of the fitting. I 100% would have had overlap if I had gone with the online tool.

This is what the online selector had me in.

Interesting…you mentioned the 48 going farther than your current PW, does that create a gapping issue there?

Curious to see what finish each tester went with.  Saw the nickel finish in store the other day and it was quite pretty!

Nickel is the finish I'm leaning toward! But I'll get to see AND hit them all at my fitting so maybe another will better suit my eye??

I don’t have the yardage gap figured out yet between the new 48 degree and my 9iron. Trust me I am very interested to find out. But from the 48 down I’ll be good.

I’m really interested if the virtual tool is what I end up in. I’m using my 54 quite a bit more and need versatility in there more now. We shall see!!! Glad you were able to rest out and find the right grind for your game!

Received an email from Titleist that the Vokeys are ordered! For those wondering, the fitter places the order on your behalf if you go the route I went with for fitting. I’ll comment more later on about the online ordering process.

Played my 3rd round of the year yesterday with my buddy @ZoonORama and shot an 84. I can’t wait to get the SM10s on to the course.

@HeathS16 I have a 54 on the way in a 10S configuration. How does your existing 54 work for you?

Thanks for your great fitting recap!! It makes me even more excited for mine coming up this Tuesday.  I'm very curious what both the Fitter & software sees to make their suggestions, especially in gapping. The 6-degree spread in your recommendations, in particular, surprises me. In my admittedly limited knowledge of the fitting process, it seems like you must be good at varying your shot to effectively cover that spread. I have 4 wedges in that span and it often doesn't seem like enough. Can't wait to read about your experience.

Glad to help Greg! Looking forward to see how your fitting goes. Yeah the 6 degree spread is at the top end of the recommended separation but I am optimistic. The numbers look solid. For instance, my 9-iron is at 43 degrees. As part of this test I will be gapping the whole set to see how it pans out.

I love my 54. I can use it pretty much anywhere and it serves as my go-to for pitch shots and some shots around the green that I want to get on the ground quickly. I find it more forgiving than my 58 and it fills in the 110-115 gap very well.

That being said, it has lost a bit of bite as the grooves have worn.  It is however, still one of my favorite clubs and I love the 4 degree increments of my current set up.

Nice fitting info. Glad you had a great time and fitting.

I picked up the SM9's in the Jet Black. My first non-wood in a black finish. It's very striking! I can't wait to paint fill some of it. 🙂 I'll be curious, as most are to how the finish holds up over the next couple of years.

I was tempted! I think if I hadn't seen my fitter's entire bag in ALL black including the shafts and grips, I would have. But the shaft color alone is $35 each. FWIW, my fitter says that he has experience with the black finish and it holds up very well. Let us know what you see.

Yeah, that all blacked out look has to be something to behold. We'll see how I get along with the black wedges before I think about black irons. 🙂

I normally always go with black finish wedges. The vokey finish usually last for good while, I have the 8s and they still look good. Only little wear on the bottom . But Im curious about the raw finish. For one I think it looks amazing once its all raw and rusted out.

Just a quick update to those following along on this thread. It took about a week for the Titleist order to flip from received to processing. The ship date is now set to 6/7. Not sure how long it normally takes, but at least there is some movement.

Would love to get these in hand by Father's Day weekend so I can put them into play on the course. Obligations between now and then will probably confine me to a couple range visits before I get out again.
