How are you liking the launch angle on the 56?

Honestly compared to my sm8s it’s launching higher. With the change in shafts just feels easier to hit all the different launch windows I looking for.

That’s interesting.  I thought it might launch a little lower but with a nice trajectory with more spin…. Compared to your worn 56 SM8.

Chip some balls around the yard last night. Can tell you for certain that these feel better than my sm8s.

So, I'm supposed to be out playing this morning, but storms have postponed things... again!!! In fact, I can’t even upload this update right away because power is out! Geez…

Instead, I thought I'd show so you the results of some testing/practice I got in late yesterday at my usual course in Au Gres, MI.

I started off trying both the 56.14F and the 60.12D around the practice green to compare them to my gamers, an SM9 54.12D & 58.08M. I usually do a bump & run using my 8 iron when there’s nothing in the way, but there are lots of times that something is or that I’m short-sided where I need to stop quickly. But I’ve never had much consistency with either so I was hoping the more generous bounce & grinds made a difference, and at least on the 56.14F, it did. I was very pleased with the consistency, so much so that I videoed one of the shots:

Then, the staff at Huron Breeze Golf Club narrowed their driving range and allowed me to set up my own 50 yard practice station off to the side. That allowed me to use my own ProV 1 balls with a silver dot attached to get some good Mevo numbers. No video, but I used partial swings in both cases.

SM105650YrdShots.png.01a9084f2d844179510fbc1482df83bd.png

SM106050YrdShots.png.6726763c5b6127a4384764b438e20c03.png

I do think that the heavier swing weight and the more generous bounce/grind combinations provides me with much more consistent results. Out of the 20 total shots I hit, there was only one of my far-too-typical fat dumps, and it was so egregious that nothing could have prevented it! But I’m not sure what to make of the 1500 RPM higher spin numbers on the 56 vs the 60. The average height is also higher with the 56 so it must be my delivery. I didn’t document where I hit each shot on the club face but maybe I hitting the 56 higher up?? Any thoughts?

Finally, I tested them a bit in the practice sand trap. Unfortunately, they were too busy for me to set up the Mevo for spin numbers, maybe next time. I started out seeing if I could really open up the face and hit some high, soft-landing shots. But I don’t think the full grinds of the F & D are really suited for that. At least I hope that’s the case as I couldn’t come close to any consistency. But squaring up or just slightly opening the face? Wow, what that great, especially with the 56.14F.

I'm really looking forward to putting these in play later today!

Well, the skies cleared but the winds were still pretty strong as we finally got 9 holes in yesterday afternoon on a very soggy course. I only had one opportunity to use the 52.12F, and it was a full shot. I hit it 100 yards into a stiff wind, where it backed up 2 feet. My old 50 degree set GW would go 110-115 yards on good shots, but I couldn't hit it very consistently. Yes, this was only one shot, but I was very pleased with feel, flight, and distance (into a stiff wind).

I also only had one opportunity to use the 60.12D. Well, two, but that was because I totally chunked the 1st shot from a very soggy, baren lie. The 2nd shot of 33 yards landed about 2 feet to the right of the pin and stopped there. Very nice!

The club that I used the most was the 56.14F. I had 5 opportunities to use it from various lies. And other than 1 shot out of a wet, hard bunker, I scared the hole each time (still need to work on distant control, though). My playing partners even offered to take it off my hands if I decided against it!

I'm planning on another 18 Thursday so more later.

Getting my first full round in Saturday with them. Will probably get lots of chances to use them as my game is rusty.

Another 18, another update on the Vokeys. As far as the overall round is concerned, it turns out that celebrating some returning friends with a huge fish fry and summer water the night before (summer water is like regular water, except it has Margarita in it!!) does not translate into a solid round the next morning… but I digress.

I got to use, well… ‘had to use’ is probably better phrasing, each of the 3 new SM10s several times with positive results.

52.12F: I used it 3 times on full shots, each got through the turf much better than my set GW ever did; a huge goal of mine with this club. I’m learning that the max distance is a bit lower than the set GW, but it’s repeatable. BTW, that’s not a criticism, that’s an observation. Repeatable distance should be a goal of any scoring club.

56.14F: This is becoming my go-to club into and around the green. I managed to stay out of traps, but my GIR was pretty bad so I had various lies with which to use it. I really liked the results I got when striking the ball in various heights on the face (please see my earlier summer water comment 😵). Maybe there is something to the higher CG Vokey built into this model.

60.12D: I like this club for short-sided situations. I still need to get comfortable with how aggressive I swing it as I was quite short in both cases, but the flight and spin are very impressive.

I plan to get some range time in this weekend, and I’ll report anything interesting as a result.

Schools out for the summer. Did a little work on green side chips today. 60T grind is quickly becoming my favourite wedge. Spin was great, one hop stop. Was able to go up top and land soft. 56 felt like reliable and comfy for me. Playing in the am so gonna get some more testing done. IMG_3744.jpeg.e889d542b73584434b03f78b0ddb81b4.jpeg

Quick wear update on the 58 degree.
You can see the black is giving way to a beautiful nickel finish. This is after about 2 hours of bunker practice.

Played 18 today. Gotta say first full round with them and I am already in love with these. The spin and feel is better than my SM8s. The 60T grind was my go to for 60 yards & in and around the greens. The way it lays on the ground and interacts with the turf is perfect for the conditions here in NS. The Raw finishes is starting to rust and adding some bag appeal.

Anyone have any questions or things they want to know??

@MIGregB Nice recap! Sounds like you are still getting to used to them but liking what you see

@HeathS16 I was thinking that finish might start to wear away. 2 hours of bunker practice?! That sounds awesome.

@Chubbs1991 Glad to see you are starting put the SM10's through the paces up there in the northern grass.

2 hours of bunker practice will wear any finish.
My club is hosting a provincial jr championship and I went out and they put pins in pretty nasty places. It was fun to chip and pitch into them. The SM10s did exactly like the commercial said had the signature Vokey spin.

excited to see how everyone else is liking them.

Absolutely! I was leery of the higher than usual swing weight, but I believe that it helps me with directional accuracy and getting through heavier rough. I haven't had the need to try many full-swing shots which is still my biggest question mark. I may also end up with a larger gap between my set PW and the SM10 52 than I used to have, but I plan on/hope to be in the market for new irons in the near future so I can address the gap then.

@HeathS16 Quick question. What is the bunker sand like in OK? Whenever I get to play out west, both in the Phoenix area and around LA, the sand is much coarser than here in Michigan and I really struggle getting used to it. I've been told they use coarse sand because fluffy sand gets blown away too easily, at least at the public courses I play.

So in all the excitement over the SM10 and with some wedge game struggling really being inbetween wedges and my older PINGs just being worn I jumped on the Vokey bandwagon. Never had Vokeys before and did a little change with shaft, grips and lofts... more updates to come 🙂

Since this post, I've been curious to see what bounce & grinds you settle on. Have you been fitted or at least demoted any Vokeys yet? I have no clue as to general course conditions in Switzerland, but I imagine it's similar to northern courses in the US.

Alright spies! So as I mentioned this past week I took a small trip to Orlando for work and brought my clubs with SM10's along for the ride. Now i had heard that the grass is different in Florida, and this was going to be my first time playing on a Florida course. The venue was Eagle Creek GC https://www.eaglecreekorlando.com/course-details/

On the first hole I had a about 105 yards in to the green and I decided to hit my 48 degree SM10 with a less than full swing, and it had no trouble with the grass. Swiped right through it as if it wasn't even there. The ball landed on the green and rolled back about 3 feet. Sweet!!

Around the greens the ground and the grass seemed spongy. Almost artificial. My pitches and chips were all solid strikes.

Now for the bad news, we only got 7 holes in before the sky erupted and lightning struck multiple times. One was so close I felt a static charge in my putter when I was on the green!

I wish had some pictures to share, but unfortunately I had no opportunity to take any since we were discussing business topics at length. That being said, I can attest to the SM10's and the impressive turf interaction I get with the grinds I have.

More testing is forthcoming with simulator #'s being the next stop.

Wow Snoopy! You should be careful, that's pretty close if you felt the static mate😬

The course looks amazing! Definitely one I would like play when I visit the States in the near future.

Yeah it was unnerving to say the least. A shocking introduction to Florida golf 🥴

Note: When you do play in Florida during the summer, make your tee time before noon.

At least at the moment, it's my SM10 56.14F. That may just be because I've had more occasion to use it, but I really like how it performs.

What about you? What's your current favorite?

Mine would have to be the 60.04 TGrind. Love the way it feels around the green. image.jpg.adc1c6369e06585b81c49ca3974b1f25.jpg

I’ve never hit a Vokey wedge before. I’m a bit of a Taylormade fan. These were more than reviews, they were an experience.

Beautiful pieces of equipment, data led fittings, just fantastic

Keep moving forward

The TaylorMade MG seems to top the Most Wanted list at lot, but I've never had the opportunity to try them myself. The last time TaylorMade MG & Vokey went head-to-head was in 2022 with the MG3 vs. the Vokey SM9 (#1 & #2 respectively). I know Vokey made several changes to the SM10 to improve CG and consistency, but no doubt TM made changes to the MG4, as well. It'd be interesting to see someone with both SM10s and MG4s do a head-to-head. None of my golfing buddies have newer TMs otherwise I'd test them out.

I have the MG in a 60 degree. And I have a MG3 in a 50 degree. They are definitely my go to clubs for anything 110 yards and in. The Vokeys are super nice. After seeing the above testings, I might have to look into them.

Keep moving forward

Alright time for an update - I am making the switch to graphite iron shafts and that included my wedges. While I have enjoyed the Toura wedges and to an extent my Mizunos from last year there was something lacking with both. To the point I kept going back to my old PING Glide 2.0 wedges when I really needed a trusted set.

I went through the Titleist WedgeFit App and it spat out the F and D grinds for what I play. While on this kick I also wanted to remove my PW and GW and go with all speciality wedges.

So after the wedge fit online I went to a local course and found a place I could demo and try the wedges (granted not in the graphite shafts). Thankfully my friend runs a pro shop and I was able to get a few of the different grinds to confirm what the app had suggested.

My only sticking point was I was also going to need to go a degree strong on all the lofts to keep my gapping appropriate.

The fitting was pretty standard, it helped knowing the conditions and what I preferred compared to some other wedges I have used and we were able to remove several grinds really quickly and what do you know we ended up with both the F and D grinds.

What I ended up ordering was the SM10 46.10 F Nickel in 1 Strong and 1 Flat
SM10 50.08 FNickel - 1 Strong and 1 Flat
SM10 54.12 D Jet Black 1 Strong and 1 Flat
SM10 58.12 D Jet Black 1 Strong and 1 Flat

All with the Mitsubishi MMT Taper 95 Stiff in standard length and grips off.

They arrived in pretty short order and wow they look stunning. Now I have probably 6 or so rounds on them? Three of which have been tournament rounds. I put midsize grips on them with a few layer of tape on the bottom hand and they feel so good. It is a unique feel with graphite and I like it.

The head feel a bit heavy, but not too much. What I really like is how each of these work with the shots that I need them for.

I use my 46-54 for full shots and 58 basically for half shots and chips etc. I use all my wedges in a variety of spots and with the different bounce options I feel I have opened up a lot more shot opportunities.

The other part in this is now for the most part my highest lofted wedge is a 57. Some would baulk at that, but I haven't really found a need for a 60 or so ... yet. I do still have a new SM9 60 that I could put into play because I do have 13 clubs I normally carry. I rarely carry 14... weird I know.

So here is a rundown on the good and noted so far.

Good - Feel and control are excellent.
Spin has been really good.
Consistency and playability.

Notes
The finish is wearing quite quickly. I don't really care, clubs are meant to be used, but for some this will be a big knock. Especially the black is wearing a lot faster than my black PING wedge I had for years.

I do need to work on strike location as I have had some toe strikes that I don't like and while they still perform okay, they are less forgiving than the T100 I had prior.

Overall they have been impressive so far and a big step up from the Mizuno wedges I tried last season which have now been relegated to the shag bag.

Love the update. I’ve begun looking at replacements for my Cleveland Zipcore wedges and was looking at the Mizuno wedges but now torn between the Ping S159 and the SM10s. If only there was a singular place with good review information on all the options out there…

My wife plays the TM and loves them. I find they have completely different feel. I’m just bias and always lean towards the vokeys.
