Golf Brand Opinion: Cleveland Golf Clubs

Recommended Posts

I have always really liked Cleveland wedges. They have a great look and feel. Unfortunately sense being purchased by Dunlop they have become a second tear brand with little to no marketing or appeal. As the only put out super game improvement in there irons and woods. This I believe has made people think they are just a cheap not quality brand.

I'm on my third set of Cleveland irons right now. I started my Cleveland journey with the 588MT/Altitude combo, then had CBXs in the bag for a bit before moving to the Halo XLs I have right now. All three sets were well built and performed great for me, and I am still in the honeymoon phase with the Halos. I've also had CBX2 wedges in the bag for a few years and I'm going to wear those into the ground.

Well made clubs, good pricing, and just an outstanding value IMO. Although I will say the paintfill issues with the Halos is real, 2 rounds and 3 range sessions and the sole paint is already half worn away on a few irons. But they perform, and that's what matters.

I currently game the RTX Zipcore wedges and love them. Even had them custom color filled when I ordered them with green and yellow for my Oregon Ducks. New wedges are on my shopping list for 2025 and this news just might make my decision a lot easier.

Clevelands wedges have always been a great choice, they may not have the flash or marketing of some of the bigger names but they perform. I did a fitting with the local rep a few months ago and loved the zipcores as well as the hywood.

I have been using Cleveland wedges for a long time now. Started with the 588 series and now have been using the CBX2 54 and 58 and they work well for me. I currently have a 6 handicap and I use Cleveland UHX irons that I got in June. They are excellent irons and the price was excellent because they were 2 years old but brand new. Too many people didn`t buy them I guess. I needed a little help with hitting the irons higher and maybe a little longer and the UHX worked to perfection. As a bonus they also feel close to a forged iron.

Definitely a great line of wedges to play.  I had them in the bag for a number of years before switching to a different brand (Edison).  I'm pretty sure I'll be back in the Cleveland fold at some point, perhaps even with the next purchase.

As far as their irons and fairways/drivers, I just don't think they hold the same position in the golf world.  They strike me as second tier, though honestly I don't have any experience hitting them, so that's just a perception.

Big fan overall. I haven't really tried much of their irons but i've gamed various cleveland wedges and they're fantastic. I prefer them to jaws and even vokey in terms of off the rack choices (haven't been fit into a vokey and might have a better result if so, obviously). The RTX feels fantastic, spins like crazy and just does the job as you'd want it to. The CBX wedges are absolutely fantastic and WAY more golfers should use them instead of traditional "blade-style" wedges.

I really like their huntington beach putter line too. High quality with interesting tech and great prices compared to the usual brands - I nearly bought one last year - lost out last minute to something else.

I think Cleveland (especially wedges) are the best choice on the market for people who don't care who they impress but just want a very very good club in the bag to play golf with.

When i started playing golf or just a bit after, I used the 588's for years and then tried the first iteration of the RTX and and really was not a fan, so swapped over to Vokey for a while and have swapped back to the RTX 6 - I love these wedges so I am def going to have to give the RTZ ones a try
For the past two years I have been sporting the HB Soft Milled 10.5 putter - this so far is my second favorite putter of all time - it is super easy to use and very comfy in my hands

I have never really used anything else for very long from Cleveland - tried the TA7, Cleveland Launcher driver, but nothing ever stuck

Love Cleveland wedges, have gamed several over the years, and I think of them as premium top 2-3 brands for wedges. They are always in my consideration set when I am looking for a new wedge. Gamed a Launcher driver for 2-3 seasons back in the mid 2000s and loved it but haven't played any Cleveland products outside of the wedges since then. If they made another driver/wood/iron that got huge praise on the performance side and looked good, I'd definitely give it a chance. I always search for best performance for the money when shopping for new clubs and Cleveland can/will be a brand that can deliver on those criteria.

I think Cleveland is a great and consistent brand, especially so for newer golfers based off of what they offer and their pricing.

Their putters are criminally underrated in my opinion. And while I have not used their wedges, I have been told they are great for forgiveness in your wedge game. And having hit the Cleveland Launcher Woods, I can say those are really solid as well. I think Cleveland kind of falls in line with their partner brand Srixon where a lot of people just aren't gaming then right now.

I’ve played Cleveland wedges for over 20 years and currently have the RTX 6 and love them. I’ve tinkered with other brands but will never use anything other than Cleveland. These new wedges look so sleek and high end.

When I end up getting new wedges, Cleveland will be one brand I give a serious look at.  I briefly had a RTX Zipcore 6 in the bag as a gap wedge and absolutely loved it.  I felt like it was very easy to put draw or cut spin on it.  I've been sort of chasing that feel with my current Vokeys and am wondering if potentially it was a shaft difference.

I play one of the OG CBX wedges in my 54, and my 58 is a CBX2 Zipcore and I love them! Perfect for full swing shots and plenty of forgiveness. I am super interested in these once I upgrade my irons to a more Player's Distance instead of GI set. I never got along with traditional blade wedges like Vokeys, but I also had shafts that were way too heavy in them for me. I have a feeling if I try graphite in these like my CBXs, it will be a game changer!

My first sand wedge was a Cleveland Reg 588 Gun Metal, and I still have it to this day. I've always liked Cleveland wedges!

I've also tried out the Cleveland hywoods and putters, and I believe they offer a solid product at an excellent price point.

I think Cleveland is great.  As noted many times by other posters, their wedges have a long standing reputation.  I still have a CBX in the bag, a RTX as a back-up, and an older 588 that I got when I first got into golf as a practice wedge in my backyard.  But I feel they make great clubs beyond wedges.  My HB Soft Milled putter is one of my favorite clubs in the bag and as whole their putter line is extremely underrated.  I've also been a fan of their woods and hybrids over the years.

I think their branding and marketing is fun and their price points are fair, offering quality clubs at a cheaper price point than the big guys.  Kinda like Wilson in that regards.

I also think it's an interesting marketing approach to keep them branded with Srixon.  They could split them for marketing purposes even though they are owned by the same company, but having one brand for the pros to use woods, irons and balls, and another brand for the wedges and putter is interesting and unique.

Cleveland is a very solid golf brand. I have played all kinds of clubs from them, but like many, focus on their wedges. I have played their wedges for years and now play their cbx line. Look and perform great!

I would be curious from a business stand point, how much money they make off drivers and putters and what not. I don't know a soul that has a set of cleveland irons, so it would be nice if they were just a wedge specialist. Maybe put a bit more money into that line to make their wedges the "Scotty's" of the marketplace.

Just my thoughts though. As a wedge maker they get a 8/10 for me. For overall score they get a 5.5/10.

1 hour ago, Mark VT said:

In my opinion Cleveland Golf still makes very good equipment, especially their wedges. However, since 2007, when they were purchased by the Sumitomo Rubber Company (Srixon) they have not been a priority for Srixon in terms of advertising and promotion. It seems to me that the Srixon name in golf clubs, balls and tour presence is their priority, with the  Cleveland brand taking a back seat. The quality of the Cleveland brand, particularly the wedges, is likely as good or better than ever. Unfortunately, many golfers, especially the younger age groups, are simply not familiar enough with the brand.
Again, my opinion and observations only.

I agree with this. To me Cleveland is the "my first set of clubs" brand before you want to/can spend more money on a better performing set. The wedges are good, but I have not liked many aspects of the irons or driver when I've used them.

I feel the brand has morphed into two dimensions -

1. Cleveland woods and irons aimed at helping the high handicapper with a series of clubs that meet certain aspects to address swing flaws.

2. The wedges and perhaps some of the specialty clubs that address the higher end quality and performance spectrum.

I bought a set of Cleveland Launcher irons last spring and absolutely love them.  Hitting it straighter and for a shade more distance.  Lot of people mistake them for hybrids but they are not a hybrid, true cavity back irons.  I love the rails on the sole of the club, goes right through the rough with little or no "grab" or twisting.  I would recommend these to anyone but specifically ideal for mid and high handicappers in my opinion.   Best golf investment I ever made (that and my backstroke putter).

I have played Cleveland wedges off and on for years. A good, solid, workable club with marginal durability. It seems I am sharpening grooves a lot with my last set of Cleveland's when compared with the Taylormade Hi-Toe I am currently carrying. Still, they are my go to wedges if I have to replace a club that I left on a greenside and that afterwards was never turned in.

I think the new wedges look great. I have an old cg10 54 degree that has both no face and a shiny grip, but I always tell myself to maybe take it for a spin. I love my 19 degree 2 hybrid hibore. It's so old it's a 2, where i think 19 degrees are now 3 hybrids. If I could find a 16 degree one, I'd take out my crap 3 wood

When my wife asked if I wanted to leave Maine and move to where she grew up, I couldn't say no to Pinehurst, NC. I honestly don't spend much money on golf equipment, but I'm constantly reading reviews in case I ever get ready to buy

I swing left handed and have been the State of Maine Left Hander's champion since 1997, the last year they held the tournament. I'm currently a 7.1 handicap. Trying to get lower, but my gut gets in the way.

Don't know why they ever stopped producing this line, but the huntington beach putters is genuinely one of the best putters I have ever played ( even hitting two balls with a scotty in a proshop counts, lol ). The milled face they have somehow produces such a soft feel, and their stock grip which I usually switch out is honestly super nice. They have great top down looks and in my opinion are the way to go over a scotty, considering they are also more cost effective!

The new RTZ wedges look the part! For me personally I’ve never been able to swing Cleveland wedges. They were thinner than other wedges I’ve used and I always seemed to come in to steep and chunk everything. Seems more like a user problem, because the quality of the club isn’t the issue! I do have a Cleveland hybrid that I have had in the bag for 12 years now that has been a life saver!

I have tried the Ping Glide wedges and Callaway Mac Daddy wedges but keep going back to the Cleveland CBX Zipcore wedges. I use the 56 and 60 from everywhere.  I use them from the fairway, rough, sand, and rocks! Living in Arizona, we have desert conditions off the fairways. Theses wedges hold up and allow me to hit good shots from poor conditions.

I love the game of golf. it doesn't get any better! ⛳
