That is so interesting.  I've been fit on GC Quad and hit on it often.  I have faster swing speed and have never had a problem with it missing club head data.  Never even thought about having to put it in the back of the capture zone either.

It is definitely odd.  I know one particular tester that continually struggles to get some clubs to register club head data.  They have rotated people thorough and get measurements and then he hits and gets nothing.  He is slower than Harry and a little faster than me.

Sounds more like it was specs that affected its results. Why make a follow up post to a donor on social media that talks about how results varied because it was out of spec vs their was a different tester pool which it fit better this year vs last. Obviously just speculation on my part reading into it.

We are all reading into what was posted.  We see as part of the report out, all the clubs are measured and reported on so If it was simply “specs” it should be apparent in the charts.   The SM posts are unfortunately vague but the website alludes to the fact that it wasn’t an off the rack retail offering.  That fact is one of the things required to be in the club testing, the club must be an off the rack configuration that any consume can purchase in a retail store for no upcharge.   My guess is that they answered because a club went from middle of the pack to top of the pack and they got a ton of email. Clubs do move up and down from year to year; I recall Srixon dropping from the top to low between years.  I am guessing that in these situations, there is deeper review of information associated with the clubs.

Wow. Just saw the Instagram post about last years g425 max. crazy to think it wasn’t the right specs

I have no idea what it was.  Could be that they provided a shaft that was an upcharge shaft and therefore violated the rules for being included.  Other clubs have been left out from tests for this reason.

One hit my Stealth+ Ventus combo one but was doing some work today for a kid putting in a couple Full Swing Simulators and I took a few swings with an autoflexx shaft. Never hit one before but now I’m thinking an autoflexx and Rogue ST TD LS could be in my future lol

I’d like to hit an autoflexx shaft sometime.  Doubt I would buy one at their cost; just curious.

I'm curious as to everyone's thoughts ( @cnosil) on renewing a Foundations membership.

I pay for the Grint, am thinking about getting the Tour Temp training app, am slightly in the doghouse for my recent purchase of the Stack System, and will likely be buying an annual green fee pass at my new duty location in July.  So, I don't want to shell out for another app or subscription needlessly...but you know me, I will if it will help.

More to the point, am I being ignorant or naive to think that once you know the DECADE math and the principles of it, you kind of know it and the cost/benefit equation of a renewal is a bit harder to swallow?  I could upgrade to Elite, but that's $200 and I'm a Dad with a full-time job...not sure I'm the target audience for Elite.

More succinctly, has anyone renewed their Foundations membership and are you satisfied and glad you did...you're gaining new insights and knowledge that's helping?

I have only done one 6 month subscription.   I haven’t mastered those basic skills and foundation so I am working on improving the Tiger 5.   I know Scott is adding new content, but I don’t believe I need that content now,   I think the elite is more detailed than I need at this time.

See that's what I was I missing when I was trying to get good images of my clubs during the Cobra Connect challenge-Specialized Jigs!😆

Maybe it was just the photographer.  😂. I watched a series on YouTube where they gave professional photographers cheap s cameras like a plastic Barbie digital camera and they were still able to take amazing photographs.  They also gave everyday people professional grade cameras and they still got the sam mediocre images.

it is like having a fabulous meal in a restaurant and asking the chef what kind of oven/cooktop was used.

Apparently I am a believer. My wife got me a LAB Golf putter for Christmas and I love it. I like the Mezz 1 a bit more for the shape so I just ordered one with the Accra shaft.

The three putters were in the putter tests this year. Generally impressed, I personally liked the blade model best.  Definitely a putter you need to be fit for or it just doesn’t feel right.

When is it possible for me to do this testing?! Haha

Just to clarify some drivers may have different brand shafts? Or same shaft through all drivers? Thank you mate! Great to know there is detail and accuracy in testing.

If you live near Yorktown Virginia you can be one of the testers.

yes, they have different brand shafts.  Think of it this way, if you were to order the club from the manufacturer, what shafts are available as a no cost option.  Callaway and Taylormade may offer a completely different set of shaft options.  Also, the same shaft many not work the same across all the heads.

The biggest problem I foresee with “driver testing” with a large group of people are a few factors:

    1. if the same shaft is used (their ideal shaft in their “gamer”) it will react differently per head. And with that create different numbers than with the best shaft for the head and user.

    2. Saying “fastest” ball speeds does not mean accurate or furthest.

    3. Back to the shaft, it will produce different ball strike locations. Also certain heads have an “ideal” strike zone on the face, some center some high center, others out towards the toe center.

I would love to know how all aspects of the testing were done and if they done similar to a club fitting rather than putting each driver in the same shaft. Love y’all’s information and content!

In the MGS most wanted driver testing,  it is about the best stock configuration that works for the tester.   Testers do a basic fitting to see what shaft/adapter setting will provide close to optimal results.  Generally there are 3 drivers per session; the testers rotate through the drivers 5 shots at a time until the get 15 total shots.  Sever outliers are removed and we hit shots to get us back to 15.  What else do you want to know?

Might have been a slightly misleading comment.  What I meant was I get my line, then set over the ball, look at the hole a few times, but then make my stroke looking down at the ball... not that I make my stroke looking at the hole, or ahead of the ball.

I putt conventional grip.  right hand low.

Thank you for taking the time to dig in to my faulty stroke... all good suggestions and advice CNosil!  I will keep working at it.

Wasn’t misleading, I am guessing that you are peeking at the hole early which opens everything up and creates a pull. Right hand probably isn’t the problem unless you are really trying to rotate it thorough the stroke.

no problem, we are all here to try and help each other.  I‘D personally start with gate drills or the yardstick and make different length strokes to work on face angle.   Can do this at home on carpet or a putting mat.   Don’t putt at a hole,  just work on getting the ball through the gate or down the yardstick; I put a pillow or something to stop the ball just after the gate/ruler.

... You have brought up a great teaching moment. The golfers I see on the course that are lined up incorrectly is just mind boggling. It is not uncommon to see someone lining up 30-40* to the right. The adjustments that need to be made from that alignment are just off the charts difficult. When it is someone I know that asks for help, I lay down a shaft at their feet then another parallel to the ball showing where the ball is aimed and they are all completely baffled as they think they are lined up down the middle of the fairway. The other error of course is lining up aimed far to the left because they are slicing the ball which all but guarantees they will do just that.

... This error is so easy to check and should be at the top of the list for everyone, but especially those suffering inconsistent directional control. Most golfers are comfortable with what they are doing and changing it can be very difficult. Often when I lay down two shafts and help them align their feet parallel to the target line, they waggle their feet making tiny incremental movements until they are pretty much right back where they started 30-40* open and then have no idea how they got there and would swear they didn't move their feet. Change is difficult and takes dedication and perseverance to overcome what is comfortable.

Working on this myself.    Watch most pros during their practice sessions and they are using aids to help make sure their alignment is correct.

I think in general it is nice to see that the newest products aren’t always the best. It’s really what makes me intrigued with some of the progress with technology vs older products. Are we still at the point where the numbers can’t be pushed much further even with a significant change such as the stealth driver

As one if the testers I hit all of these clubs and in general I do not see a lot of difference at the top end, but there are performance tiers. These tiers  are more about due to how I respond to the club, shaft, and other factors.  Are clubs maxed out?  Probably not.   While there are COR/CT limits,  there will be improvements on misshits which will help the amateur golfer.  This is where stealth shines IMO.  Small gains this year,  but it starts to set a stage for bigger gains over the years.   Will we see significant gains next year?  Probably not; just subtle changes.   The other area for growth is swing speed….can the club be designed to help me swing faster?  Faster speed with same COR equals more distance.

The biggest unknown is determining when there is a significant enough change for you to move to something else.

But if someone is looking at the data to compare against their swing. Someone with a late release is going to have different results than someone with an early release. Someone with an aggressive transition will have different results than a smooth transition.

Think those will have an impact on how the person gets to impact and how the club looks at impact but if I said:

    • 100 MPH at impact
    • 150 ball speed
    • path 1 degree in to out
    • Face square to path
    • dynamic loft of 15*
    • AoA 2* up.

what was my transition and release?

    • how well do you do making 3’ putts?
      • usually where the pull comes into play... once is too many especially at 3 ft.... but if I had to put a number to it... 20% pulls.  a few more % would be the opposite, a push, by holding the face open at impact... usually as a result of a pulled putt on the previous hole.  a few more % on mis-reading a break (intended line, missed putt) and hitting it through the break.  My I am probably a 75% make at 3'.  But that would be a good metric to track, so I'll make a point of that.
    • what is you 50/50 make distance?
      • est. 6 feet.
    • do you do ok with distance control?
      • Mostly, yes.  My lag is usually pretty good.
    • what do you do to work on face control?
      • Time spent on the practice green with straight short putts, and sometimes a "tee gate" drill.  practice and on-course I try to focus on the area in front of the ball (between the ball and hole) rather than focus on the ball.  I get my line, and roll it.  Less pulls when I'm outside 6 feet, if I miss a putt, it is usually a bad read at longer lengths, but I hit my intended line.
    • Have you tried putting with your eyes closed?  Lots of people especially on shorter putts turn during the stroke to look at the hole and see the putt go in.
      • Yes, on occasion.  Drills and on course.  Also, not looking up to watch the ball on shorter putts.
    • why do you play the ball position you play and what is the ball position?
      • Middle/slightly ahead of middle.
    • do you use a line on the ball and if so does it look aligned correctly when you are over the putt?
      • I have tried it... I don't care for using an alignment line on the ball.  To much focus on the ball for me, and I didn't see any improvement on pulling the putt... I can close my club face across the line just as easily with or without a line.
    • how do you practice your putting?
      • noted above, also trying to take my right hand out of the stroke as much as possible.

Your 3’ make percentage should be 95%+ as that is the distance you want you lag putts to stop within giving you an high probability of make.  Sounds like you are trying to steer the ball into the hole and making lots of compensations when you miss one.  Those short putts can be a struggle because the stroke is so short leading to the face angle getting off.   this is one of my struggles as well and I tend to lighten the grip pressure on the shorter putts to let me make a little longer swing.   You mention that you look at the shorter putts,  which opens the shoulders, moves the path left and closes the face more…..left miss.  eyes closed, quiet eye, waiting for a time before you look up are all strategies to maintain setup.   Work on gate drills or putting down a yardstick to get those 3’ putts starting online.  You say keep the right hand out of the stroke,  do you putt left hand low or power the stroke with the left side/left arm?

Are we really bumping threads from nearly two years ago to complain about the angle of photographs on a website?

I CANNOT WAIT for golf season to start for the majority of us so we can get back to talking about things that actually matter.

Ironically, the angle of photographs is critical for the sale of golf clubs and one of the first things people judge.  While a late contribution, he is actually correct, based on the photos I would pick the new level over the sub 70.   I was talking to the MGS team and apparently there is an equipment photographer that most of the OEMs use because he has specialized jigs to position the clubs correctly because it is so critical on how a club is perceived.

Thanks Stu.  That is interesting, but makes sense.  I wouldn't say I have the dreaded "y" word with a conventional putter, but I can say that I have a tendency to pull a lot of putts... maybe a precursor to the "y"word.  I am just looking for ways to keep my putter face on line... maybe a long putter is the trick for me... I'll definitely do some testing with one.  Because of my lackluster approach game... I have a fair amount of fringe and long putts... so I am definitely heeding that warning from you.

Diving in a little deeper,  I am assuming face on line means you struggle with face control and starting the ball on your intended line.  Some questions/thoughts:

    • how well do you do making 3’ putts?
    • what is you 50/50 make distance?
    • do you do ok with distance control?
    • what do you do to work on face control?
    • Have you tried putting with your eyes closed?  Lots of people especially on shorter putts turn during the stroke to look at the hole and see the putt go in.
    • why do you play the ball position you play and what is the ball position?
    • do you use a line on the ball and if so does it look aligned correctly when you are over the putt?
    • how do you practice your putting?

So what should be the difference between a hollow body versus a cavity back - or better yet the two mentioned specifically?

How would they be different in the wild after thousands of shots?

The differences would be subtle.  Hollow body clubs are generally multi piece and allow designers to do things they couldn’t normally due in a forged, milled, or cast head.  What you find is a more blade like look and the designers ability to better control forgiveness and spin.  You will probably see slightly higher ball speeds. The con would be the complaint of “hot spots” on the face causing inconsistent distances.  This applies to all hollow body vs cavity back designs not just Mizuno.

What you might see is slightly more consistent results over time with those thousands of shots.  You said standard deviations were about the same, but generally they aren’t going to be huge numbers (hopefully) so you’d have to have a decent size data set to compare the prior club to the new club and most people don’t have that data.  You mentioned 2-4 yards distance not being worth it, but what if you also narrowed dispersion both in distance and left/right by 2-4 yards…..which can only be determine with a larger dataset.
