Was just messing about! Just trying to stir the pot from the crusty bottom of the pot!

Ah. Thought that might be the case, but the lack of the /s/ sarcasm font was an important oversight 😉

Also, things on the bottom of the pot typically just get caked on and ignored, so be careful how much you attempt to stir up 😉

That’s grounds for disqualification to my understanding

You would be mistaken, lol.  No rule stipulates same name required - in the Major Giveaway pick-ems, there usually is, but that's mostly for the sanity of the people handling the oversight.  In this case, it was me doing the oversight, and my sanity is already questionable, at best, so no problem 😉

Guessing here, but on the RYP page, the banner message says "You pick 5 PGA players for each tournament. You will receive the winnings and the FedEx points of the players you picked." The rank on the leaderboard is based off of cumulative under-par, not FedEx points or winnings though. That might be the source of confusion.

On a different note for anyone who cares / just to stir the pot 😉, here's the staff rankings as of week 2. A fun subplot to keep track of!

    image.png.d29361ae8814302356caedeacd6c6516.png

That is 100% my confusion 🙂 Also, don't forget Jamie's entry, which is not (for some reason) under "GolfSpy_APH", as God intended, but under "Jamie Danbrook," whatever THAT means.

I think the goal of having it be sorted by "under par" was that it rewarded having five picks that made the cut.  I guess I'm just trying to get clarification (yes, even now, only 2 weeks in) about how we'll pick the ultimate winner - whether based on score-to-par, or FedEx points, or total earnings. Or some sort of combo of the three?  Because already, even after only two weeks, there are different leaders depending on how you sort.

Also, Jamie (@GolfSpy_APH), you have a FedEx delivery. No one was home, so they took back (and, for some reason, "set on fire" per the notification) the custom set of gold-underlaid Mizuno Prototype irons (the gold purportedly made them VERY soft, but kinda heavy) I sent you.

Oh well. Maybe next time I win the lotto you'll be home to accept delivery of the stupid present I send your way.

  4. Hey Co-Commish ( @GolfSpy_APH) - just so I know how to sort to find out by which metric I'm losing by: for the Pick'em league, are we going by shots under par for the season long race, or FedEx points?  The description mentions FedEx, but the default sort of the league is shots under par, so just trying to getter gauge (again, for the entire season, and I know we're early here) what to focus on.

Obviously, they kind of go hand-in-hand - if I have 5 picks make the cut, they'll all get paid and earn FedEx points, but again - I know last year we did prize money, which we're changing up this year so that we're rewarding quality of team and not just picking the winner, but the FedEx language in the welcome is a bit vague (for my "I need to know what to do to crush those around me" competitive nature) 🙂

  5. Date 01/26/2024
Course Name Sterling Hills Golf Club
    Gross Score 86
    Course Handicap 7
    Gross Strokes over/under par 15

    Net Birdies or better 4
    Longest Drive 289
    SIM Round?

Pretty great front 9, hit 6 of 7 fairways, played smart, putted well, made one terrible mistake in not clubbing up over water and the wind gobbled up my 9 iron, and it landed short of the green and back down a hill into water. Fun. I also decided to compound the error with a three-putts (only one on the front, 15 putts on the front).

But then the back 9 was a bit of a nightmare. Double, par, double, par, par, double, bogey, bogey, bogey.

    Fun!

Anyway, awesome track that I'd never played before, got to play with @Syks7 and walk a beautiful course (and they didn't lie about the hills...) 😄

Next time I'll be clubbing up a bunch, as lots of holes out there where you're in a bowl and can't feel the wind, but the minute the ball gets up in the air, it gets eaten up.

    Live and learn 😜

"The new phonebooks are here, the new phonebooks are here!"...a reference to Steve Martin in The Jerk.  I actually just got my TS4 demo 7i from Golfworks and I am hoping to go hit it tomorrow, but I have a question for the group.  When I went into Golf Galaxy to get shaft fitted, the recommendation was that I get my irons 1/2" over standard, so that is how I ordered my 7i from GW and it arrived with a finished length of 37.5".

When I compare my current irons, Wilson Staff Progressives, from back in '93, the TS4 7i is about 1/2" longer than my 7i, however the listed loft of the TS4 7i is 33 degrees, which is also the same loft as my WSP 6i, which is also 37.5"...So did I really get a new iron that is a 1/2" over standard?  Given matching lofts, should I really be getting 1" over standard, or am I thinking about this wrong?

    Hi everyone,

I hope that I am posting this in the right place. Yesterday I went to get fit for irons and had the chance to hit the new driver from Callaway: the Ai Smoke Triple Diamond (AiSTD) and compare it to my Paradym Triple Diamond (PTD). I am new to MyGolfSpy and it has been a great find for me. I have used others reviews to learn more about golf and overall about the industry. I am very happy that I may be able to contribute back. Below are some comparisons that I noticed.

For context I am a single digit handicap (barely but it counts😂) with a high swing speed. I average well into the 120mph club head speed and ball speed anywhere from upper 170's mph to mid-high 180s. A few months ago I won the PTD at a long drive competition at my local range. My Paradym has an Xstiff 75g Tensei White Shaft. I was able to use both that shaft in both the PTD and AiSTD as well as the Ventus black 7x in both heads.

Besides the differences in colors on the driver, at address and feel of the driver are very similar which was great for me. I love the way the PTD looks at address and hoped they wouldn't change it. When I switched to the PTD from my previous Rad Speed I was blown away at how much speed/distance I picked up. While that wasn't the case between the PTD and AiSTD, I did notice a difference in off center strikes. I don't know if they could really add more "juice" to center strikes. The PTD is a beast in itself. That being said with the AiSTD, if I missed off the toe side or heel side, I was able to clearly tell but I didn't lose nearly as much distance or speed as I would with my PTD. I also noticed that off center strikes tended to still fly straighter. I haven't hit a driver that could maintain distance/ball speed on "miss hits" as well as the AiSTD did.

    So what do I think:

If you are looking at Callaway for drivers or are debating switching to the newer version, I would say that if you are needing a little more forgiveness off the tee it is worth it to get the AiSTD. I believe myself to be an above average ball striker and for that reason I don't think I would make the switch. If money is not an issue, the AiSTD is an incredible driver and is very much worth considering. If you are a player who rarely misses the center of the face, the PTD might be the better option. I did notice a higher ball speed with the PTD in perfect contact than the AiSTD with perfect contact, but it was marginal. Less than 5 MPH ball speed and less than 7 yards distance change.

I want to emphasize that these drivers are not the most forgiving out of all drivers, they are truly meant for high swing speeds and fairly consistent contact but the AiSTD does make a good jump in increased forgiveness. I hope someone finds this valuable and if anyone has any further questions I am more than happy to answer. I am worried that I am slowly making my way into a gearhead but what can you do, this game is just too good.

Awesome stuff! Really appreciate the info - I am by no means a HSS player, but considering the PTD is such a hit amongst a bunch of the other Forum Staff, I might need to go find one to try it out 🙂

For what it's worth, I hit the new PXG Black Ops driver last Friday, and the sound/feel combo is INCREDIBLE.  It was too low-spin for me (I don't generate a lot of spin anyway, so that was a no-go), but man it felt great. 🙂

Hard to believe that 10 years has gone bye, but I joined here Jan 17th, 2014.  This place has been an amazing source of information and laughter.  It is by far the best place to come for anything golf and it has been amazing to watch this forum grow.  I also can't believe how many people from 10 years ago are still active on here and that shows how good the people and information are.  Cheers to 10 more!

That's AWESOME! Totally agree - this has become my "social network" in a way that feels WAY healthier than a few other places I can go to doom-scroll 😉

Congrats on the milestone, and this place (literally) wouldn't be what it is without members like you, so thanks!

Did you hit any of the 0317 "filled cavity" irons, that have replaced the T option? Or is that what you refer to above? I'm curious about that guy and it's forgiveness. I'll be looking at the Gen6 P primarily when I go in, but will be curious to see what my swing looks like and the eventual contact heat map with the various options.

I did, yeah.  So the 0317 there are three models, the ST ("blade") and CB are both forged from one piece of steel. The T is the one that's polymer-filled (but still looks VERY similar to the ST).  I will say the thing that I LOVED about the PXG irons is that the top-lines all look nearly identical, so I think that's one of the reasons I hit them all pretty well.

The T model I was just a little inconsistent with strike. It felt awesome, but honestly, the ST and CB felt amazing, too, lol.  Then again, I was hitting them pretty middled, so they SHOULD feel good.

I wonder how much better the TS1 IM is than the original TS1, for feel, sound, distance and forgiveness. That's the dilemma I have right now - original or IM.

I have no information on this, but from the anecdotal stuff I've seen online and on the forum, the upgrades seem to be worth the extra coin.  That's why these are still in my mind as an option over the TS4's.

Anyone jumping on the Nick Dunlop train after this weekend?

I mean, it's hard not to pay attention to a kid who's 20, a sophomore, and seemingly unfazed by not only being in the lead on a Saturday but nearly shooting 59. Lol.  However, as an amateur, he would get (checking maths) ZERO dollars from winning this event, so until he turns pro, he'll just be a really cool story to watch (as far as my Pick'em Picks go, that is).  (Also - I state the above about "ZERO" having done zero research - this is based on my understanding of other events where amateurs are concerned - happy to have you all correct me 😉 )

  11. So, after the PXG Fitting I did on Friday (absolute blast - video to come of the experience), the real shock of the experience was just how far my iron strikes have come.  I went in assuming I would hit the P or maybe the T (both polymer-filled irons, the T being significantly slimmer than the P) would be where I'd spend the majority of my time, but it was actually the ST and the CB that got all my attention, and best strikes.  The CB, in particular, had a heat-map of strikes all within the red/orange zone, just slightly toward the heel.  The P and T were both WAY out on the toe (like, between the end of the club and the middle of the club - not a "little" toey, lol), but because they were polymer-filled, I thought I was middling both. I didn't love that, to be honest. I mean, they FELT incredible, but not knowing where on the face I'm hitting it isn't necessarily ideal 🙂 ).  The ST was the other genuine surprise, as even though my strikes weren't 100% in the same place as they were with the CB, my dispersion pattern was the size of a dime, and the ones I flushed flew and stopped, and the ones I thinned flew 10 yards short and skipped up to the "fly" number. It was uncanny.

Anyway, all that being said, it's made me think more and more about the TS4  as a legit option. I think I've been shying away from it because of the "it's a compact iron" kind of mentality, whereas I know in REALITY, because of Maltby's design and the inherent MPF, it's incredibly easy to play, and you get the added benefit of all the things that go in with a more compact head.

Anyway, they're now at the top of my list (right next to the TS1-IM).  Given my experience with the 6/9 iron in the TS3 that I built up last year, I really think I'd go TS4 with the MPH Elevate 95's  (the other nice surprise from the fitting - despite hitting the Steel Fiber 95s at the same time - I actually got better dispersion/speed from the Elevates. The SF looked SO cool, though, lol).  In fact, I may order one in a 6 iron (considering I have the TS3 6) and build it out just to see how I like it.

It's such a great thing, to know that there's a company like Maltby making unbelievably good products and selling them at a (frankly) steal of a deal, so going and having an opportunity at a fitting day like this just opens up more possibilities.

Long story short: fitting was really fun, and now I'm ready to try the TS4's, lol.

  12. Still VERY early in this tourney, everyone. (This is what I keep telling myself as I'm thoroughly in the bottom-half of the pack 😉 )

Great to see Zalatoris and Berger playing together, and well (up to this point, anyway).  I'll trust that my guys have a killer Round 2 and vault me past the (obviously cheating) players in first.

Also: Adam Shenk just hit his tee shot into a spectator's cup.  Like, bounce, bounce, plunk!   Don't see that every day... 🙂

  13. I loved the size-comparison as well.  I'll be very curious to hear Sam's take on how much LESS forgiving than the 2.1 it is - by all accounts, the 2.1 is their standard-bearer, so can't wait to see if it's 95% as forgiving? 90? Etc.

But man I like the look of it a lot.  And yeah, @golfinnut - that Blue is fire - I'd be very, very torn between the Blue and the Red.  I went red in my mock-up because apparently as red is the opposite of green (on the color wheel), it has the most contrast when standing over a putt.  I also think the red in the mock-up is better-looking than the red in the 2.1 mock-up.  It's probably exactly the same color, but for some reason it pops better to my eye with the 3.0.

  14. Watching the Amex today, having been in Palm Springs only two weeks ago, is kind of surreal.  I LOVED playing out of the dormant rough - not just because it was a LOT less penalizing than typical rough, but because it was genuinely beautiful and something I don't get to see all that often.  Watching these guys just go fairway/green/repeat is something I didn't QUITE do, lol, but it's still got me thinking all about Kingsmill.  Completely different kind of test, but man I'm excited to see those courses and to get to meet everyone.

Based on pictures/videos, I'm going to be hitting a LOT of 3-irons to avoid the nasty stuff left/right/center 😉

Anyone know if there's a virtual-reality version of Kingsmill anywhere?  Can you play it on any of the sim software? That would be rad.
