Did you hit any of the 0317 "filled cavity" irons, that have replaced the T option? Or is that what you refer to above? I'm curious about that guy and it's forgiveness. I'll be looking at the Gen6 P primarily when I go in, but will be curious to see what my swing looks like and the eventual contact heat map with the various options.

I did, yeah.  So the 0317 there are three models, the ST ("blade") and CB are both forged from one piece of steel. The T is the one that's polymer-filled (but still looks VERY similar to the ST).  I will say the thing that I LOVED about the PXG irons is that the top-lines all look nearly identical, so I think that's one of the reasons I hit them all pretty well.

The T model I was just a little inconsistent with strike. It felt awesome, but honestly, the ST and CB felt amazing, too, lol.  Then again, I was hitting them pretty middled, so they SHOULD feel good.

I wonder how much better the TS1 IM is than the original TS1, for feel, sound, distance and forgiveness. That's the dilemma I have right now - original or IM.

I have no information on this, but from the anecdotal stuff I've seen online and on the forum, the upgrades seem to be worth the extra coin.  That's why these are still in my mind as an option over the TS4's.

Anyone jumping on the Nick Dunlop train after this weekend?

I mean, it's hard not to pay attention to a kid who's 20, a sophomore, and seemingly unfazed by not only being in the lead on a Saturday but nearly shooting 59. Lol.  However, as an amateur, he would get (checking maths) ZERO dollars from winning this event, so until he turns pro, he'll just be a really cool story to watch (as far as my Pick'em Picks go, that is).  (Also - I state the above about "ZERO" having done zero research - this is based on my understanding of other events where amateurs are concerned - happy to have you all correct me 😉 )

  3. So, after the PXG Fitting I did on Friday (absolute blast - video to come of the experience), the real shock of the experience was just how far my iron strikes have come.  I went in assuming I would hit the P or maybe the T (both polymer-filled irons, the T being significantly slimmer than the P) would be where I'd spend the majority of my time, but it was actually the ST and the CB that got all my attention, and best strikes.  The CB, in particular, had a heat-map of strikes all within the red/orange zone, just slightly toward the heel.  The P and T were both WAY out on the toe (like, between the end of the club and the middle of the club - not a "little" toey, lol), but because they were polymer-filled, I thought I was middling both. I didn't love that, to be honest. I mean, they FELT incredible, but not knowing where on the face I'm hitting it isn't necessarily ideal 🙂 ).  The ST was the other genuine surprise, as even though my strikes weren't 100% in the same place as they were with the CB, my dispersion pattern was the size of a dime, and the ones I flushed flew and stopped, and the ones I thinned flew 10 yards short and skipped up to the "fly" number. It was uncanny.

Anyway, all that being said, it's made me think more and more about the TS4  as a legit option. I think I've been shying away from it because of the "it's a compact iron" kind of mentality, whereas I know in REALITY, because of Maltby's design and the inherent MPF, it's incredibly easy to play, and you get the added benefit of all the things that go in with a more compact head.

Anyway, they're now at the top of my list (right next to the TS1-IM).  Given my experience with the 6/9 iron in the TS3 that I built up last year, I really think I'd go TS4 with the MPH Elevate 95's  (the other nice surprise from the fitting - despite hitting the Steel Fiber 95s at the same time - I actually got better dispersion/speed from the Elevates. The SF looked SO cool, though, lol).  In fact, I may order one in a 6 iron (considering I have the TS3 6) and build it out just to see how I like it.

It's such a great thing, to know that there's a company like Maltby making unbelievably good products and selling them at a (frankly) steal of a deal, so going and having an opportunity at a fitting day like this just opens up more possibilities.

Long story short: fitting was really fun, and now I'm ready to try the TS4's, lol.

  4. Still VERY early in this tourney, everyone. (This is what I keep telling myself as I'm thoroughly in the bottom-half of the pack 😉 )

Great to see Zalatoris and Berger playing together, and well (up to this point, anyway).  I'll trust that my guys have a killer Round 2 and vault me past the (obviously cheating) players in first.

Also: Adam Shenk just hit his tee shot into a spectator's cup.  Like, bounce, bounce, plunk!   Don't see that every day... 🙂

  5. I loved the size-comparison as well.  I'll be very curious to hear Sam's take on how much LESS forgiving than the 2.1 it is - by all accounts, the 2.1 is their standard-bearer, so can't wait to see if it's 95% as forgiving? 90? Etc.

But man I like the look of it a lot.  And yeah, @golfinnut - that Blue is fire - I'd be very, very torn between the Blue and the Red.  I went red in my mock-up because apparently as red is the opposite of green (on the color wheel), it has the most contrast when standing over a putt.  I also think the red in the mock-up is better-looking than the red in the 2.1 mock-up.  It's probably exactly the same color, but for some reason it pops better to my eye with the 3.0.

  6. Watching the Amex today, having been in Palm Springs only two weeks ago, is kind of surreal.  I LOVED playing out of the dormant rough - not just because it was a LOT less penalizing than typical rough, but because it was genuinely beautiful and something I don't get to see all that often.  Watching these guys just go fairway/green/repeat is something I didn't QUITE do, lol, but it's still got me thinking all about Kingsmill.  Completely different kind of test, but man I'm excited to see those courses and to get to meet everyone.

Based on pictures/videos, I'm going to be hitting a LOT of 3-irons to avoid the nasty stuff left/right/center 😉

Anyone know if there's a virtual-reality version of Kingsmill anywhere?  Can you play it on any of the sim software? That would be rad.

Sorry, but what's the FST shaft? I tried to find anything that had those initials or letters when going through the custom build process but couldn't find anything that made sense.

https://www.golfworks.com/shafts/fst/ - you may not be able to select them from the custom build portion of the website, but if you give GW a call, you can select pretty much anything they have in stock to build with (is my understanding, anyway).  Good luck!

See Matt’s response below, but if you could see all the things that I get to see 😂

While it is under embargo, there are pictures of the putter that can be found easily….dont worry I will not post a link. 😁

They're everywhere, and they're already teasing it (got a "something's coming soon" email from them yesterday), but...we're good boys and girls here at MGS, and respect the embargo dates, so ... let Google be your guide 😉

Nope you have till first tee time

@Crossroads Golf - the above is not technically true.  You are NOT too late to join - see info pinned at the top of the page as to how to enter (info into the Run Your Pool website, and then a Venmo to me for the $2 entry), and you have until tomorrow night (Wednesday, 1/17) 9pm PST to submit an entry and get paid up.  We'll close entry after that, as I won't be able to verify anyone after that and tee times start too early to adjust on Thursday.  However, if you join - you always have until the first tee time to make your picks.

Let me know if you need my Venmo info - send me a quick PM and I can get it to you ASAP

  10. Oh man - okay - sadly I was working on an article just like this but someone beat me to the punch (stupid not being enough hours in the day where I'm not working and the kids are still at school 😉 ).  But trust me when I tell you: watch "The Phantom of the Open."  Soon.  It's an INCREDIBLE performance by Mark Rylance, and the movie is genuinely funny and endearing. TLDR: amateur who's TERRIBLE at golf decides winning the Open would be good for his family's fortunes, so he enters as a professional (no handicap required), and is (as guessed) terrible. SO bad, in fact, that he makes history.  The best part is that he keeps trying to play in successive Opens, lol.

I know we don't really know each other, but trust me: it's FANTASTIC.  I'd be shocked if any of you didn't love it.

That being said, Tin Cup is the best golfing movie ever made, hands down. It's not as FUNNY as Caddyshack or Happy Gilmore, but it's the BEST.  Come at me, bro 😉
