RichL85
Out of curiosity, how does everyone describe the music they like. I ask this as a relative question because I was having a conversation the other day where someone asked me who I like to listen to for music and I had a tough time answering. I don't necessarily like any specific group or individual. I like songs from a number of artists, but I don't inherently like any artist or group in particular. I generally don't listen to full albums anyway, but when I do, there are typically songs I like, and songs I dislike. I will listen to just about any genre or style, but couldn't really describe my tastes because it is entirely dependent on the specific song for me regardless of who the artist is. Am I an outlier here or is anyone else generally agnostic to artists as a whole? I don't know how old you are but those of us that grew up with LP's and a record player OR a transistor radio as our only music choices didn't really have the option of listening to individual tracks. I don't remember anyone have an 8 Track Recording Deck, so again even in the car we listened to entire LPs. Younger listeners grew up with completely different technology and any song by any artist is at their fingertips. So I think that plays a role. ... But answering your question with the 70's being my formative music years I want excellence at every level. My personal tastes dictates any song should be able to stand on it's own musically, so if you remove the vocals and lyrics it should still be enjoyable. I want my music to blend together but still be able to pick out any single element. I want to be able to pick out the drums or bass, or guitar or strings or anything else. I refer to music too congested to hear anything, especially if the lead vocalist is literally screaming as "noise". Not because I don't recognize it as a legit form of music, it is just so over produced and smashed together I can't hear any music. I would add that Video Killed The Radio Star was the beginning of the end for me as visuals became as important or more important than the music. I have a high end audiophile system and listen with my eyes closed so video is lost on me. ... But of course just quality music alone isn't enough and a good vocal with a pleasing tone is the second element and meaningful lyrics round out my criteria. So a Taylor Swift singing about her relationships over and over again in a self serving song has zero appeal for me, regardless of her talent. A commentary on todays youth that identify with ing about themselves but I digress, and after all it isn't their fault, just the times they live in. Songs like Last Resort from the Eagles, I'd Love To Change The World by 10 Years After, Nature Way by Spirit, What's Going On by Marvin Gay and even AEnema by TOOL all have profound lyrics and one of the elements of music important for me. ... That said, I can enjoy a great pop tune with a hook that just sticks in my head irregardless of how vapid the lyrics, but they are usually one hit wonders that I listen to when they come on the radio. As a teen growing up in the 70's, I was a hard rock/metal head... I still am...lol. My tastes have changed with age. I'm a huge fan of Blues music/Blues Rock. I delve into some country (none of the popular radio crap), Prog, Roots/Americana music and genres that I can't put a name to. I'm just a music fan. If it's good, I'll give it a listen. Rickp

I hit High School 1960 so that was a great decade followed by the 70’s that got even better so I’ve seen a few things over the years.
