Negative Attack Angle
I was playing a par 5 in a men’s night match play. The round wasn’t going great so I thought for fun I would hit my old Callaway great big Bertha 2 that I put in the bag for a laugh( see pic) . Absolutely strip my drive +285 yards. Sitting with a 6 iron into the green. I Proceeded to squander my opportunity. I turn on the ball, sending my 2nd shot left into the bush by the green. My playing competitor miraculously finds my ball and I actually have a shot. I’m stoked, but I have hit over a bunker with a large tree in the middle of it. The 3rd shot hits a branch of said tree and lands in the bunker. My 4th shot is shot of the day. I’m in the bunker, and the branch’s from the tree make it impossible for me to hit it out higher than 10 feet in the air. And the pin is still probably 15 yards away. I close the face of my 60 degree, put it back in my stance, and swing. The ball blasts out of the sand, punching through the window in front of me, lands on the green, hops twice, and stops like the emergency brake was just pulled. The ball ends up 3 feet from the hole and I drain the par put to win the hole. David Leighton Reid
I only had time for 9 holes this morning, but I had a couple of shots that might have made the highlight reel. Shot #1 - Our hole # 15 is a tight driving par 4. From the gold tees I hit a good 5 wood that left me 101 from a front pin. With some wind in my face, I tried to dial in a 105 yard shot with a 3/4 swing 9 iron. As you can see in the picture, I nearly flew it in the cup. Missed the birdie putt. Shot #2 - The next hole, #16, is our toughest hole. From the gold tees, I hit a 5 wood that left me 105 yards from another front flag placement. Once again I figured in the wind and tried to add a few yards to the shot I hit on the previous hole. The ball one hopped the flag and came to rest a few feet from the hole. I did make this birdie putt. cksurfdude, rkj427, MidwestGolfer74 and 2 others 2 3 Quote Ping G430 Max 10k 9° w/ProLaunch 45 S Ping G425 3 wood 14.5° w/Ventus Velocore Blue-6R tipped 1" Ping G430 Max 5 wood w/Ping Tour 2.0 65 R Ping G430 Max 7 wood w/Ping Tour 2.0 65 R Ping G430 4 hyrid w/AltaCB 70 R Toura Golf CB 6-PW Recoil 95 regular Toura Golf 48° GW and Vokey Sm10 wedges 52° and 57° Scotty Cameron Phantom X 11.5 putter

Off Map Oscar
Toed the hell out of my approach shot. Ended up 20 ft above the hole with a side hill sand bunker between me and a green that sloped away from me. My mind told me the only possible shot was to land it with enough back spin thst kept it from rolling all the way off the bottom side. Gave it a chip and flipped my hands under it to give her some more spin and instead of rolling off the back side it hit 2in from the cup and rolled in. First ever chip in during a real round. That's way easier than putting I should do that more often Rob Person, William P, cksurfdude and 3 others 4 2 Quote I should be golfing instead of talking smack on the web. DStar
Played a practice round with a mate who is a brilliant golfer and really helpful offering tips along the way. Got to the 13th which is a 358y par four, dog leg to the left. Suits my fade nicely.. Bit of a following breeze so decided to give it my all. Cue the perfect connection, slight fade around the corner to a green you can't see off the tee. All looked good but expected to find the ball short right as the fairway slopes L-R. Walking....walking, couldn't see it...turns out it was in a hollow at the front of the green . NubianRugby
Played Bowie Golf Club this afternoon, was able to get a 3:12 tee time for a $48 Twilight rate that includes a cart. One of the best deals in the area; course was in good shape, staff was super nice, and pace of play was outstanding. I played with another guy as a twosome (had our own carts) and we finished in 3:15, so nice to be able to play and get into a little rhythm. The little things were there too; hot dogs & burgers were ready at the turn and their $3.50 domestic beers are cheaper than any dive bar in DC. Hole of the day was the second hole, 165 yard par 3. Lady G (Garmin S70 Approach) calls for a 7 iron. Hadn't played all week and was slicing a bit, so I lined up a little bit left and cut one into the green that rolled towards the pin and left me with a 6 footer for birdie. Lined it up and dropped it in like a person who has spent a not inconsiderable amount of money into playing golf for the last 2 years. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures but it's burned in my memory. ILMgolfnut
Shot of the day: Hole #9 at Wilmington (NC) Municipal, a Donald Ross design cruising up on its 100th anniversary. It's a par-5, playing today at 482 yards from the white tees. I pulled my tee shot, got back in the fairway, approach shot came up a bit short, chunked my pitch which rolled back/to the right into a greenside bunker. So I'm lying 4 and facing a bunker shot of about 25 yards with the pin way in the back (approximate locations on photo below). And it's a pretty deep bunker too. Got out my 58 degree wedge, popped it out of there (which is not a given for me if there's any depth, and this was probably 5 feet below green level). Ball landed on the green and started tracking, took a little right turn, hit the pin and went in. Big whoop right? It was for me. I have been playing golf since March 1979, and never in all that time have I holed out from the sand, anywhere. Until today. Rasmaniandevil
Well, it wasn't my shot, but I just played Red Mountain Ranch with a friend who shot 121. He's very new to golf (and the course is pretty tough). Towards the end of the round, he hit this shot on a 140 yard 3 par. Seems like there's a pretty clear moral to this story. P.S. Erin B
Yesterday’s round was fun and although I left a few (a lot, let’s not kid ourselves) birdies out there during my birdie hunt I did have two shots I thought were pretty darn good. My first was on hole 9 of my course, a par 3 that was 165 yards tee to pin. I decided to club up on this shot to an 8 iron instead of my usual 9 iron shot. Honestly I don’t know why I did that but the result was really good. But not for my playing partners. On of them said “why couldn’t you hit it just a little more left, I’m thirsty!” My second great shot came after I pushed a pitching wedge a tad right on hole 14, another par 3 at 120 yards tee to pin. I clubbed up again, wind was the reason, I usually hit a 48 or 52 degree. Anyway, I hit the right side of the green and it rolled off near a tree. The lie wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t ideal either. I was about 15 yards and 5 feet below the pin. I chipped my 56, hit just below the crest of the rise on the green and the ball checked and rolled into the cup for birdie! My playing partners were ecstatic like I’d just hit a hole in one ! I was pretty happy to though because it was my twelfth chip in this year. Those are my shots of the day! Frequently ran after dark or predawn to avoid the summer heat. One summer morning I was out there at 6:00 or so, going down the path in the park, and I see a skunk ahead of me, locked and loaded and ready to blast me. Immediately pivoted and gave that skunk a wide berth. Fortunately he didn't open fire. Now that I think about it, that very well may have happened on the golf course, which the path skirts.
