JerryB
My shot of the day was my approach on 18. I'd been fading my driver all day which sets up great for this hole. Of course this is the one where I hit it dead straight. Had a great lie in the adjacent fairway but with a large tree directly in front of me. Pulled my seven and went with the "90% air" approach. Put it right through the tree, taking a bunch of leaves along the way and dropped it right on the green. Three-putted on the freshly punched green, but what a great-feeling shot to go out on. But I can still get it out there 250-280 depending on the day yet 270-300 would be oh so much better. One of the things concerning swing speed that really stuck with me was in his prime DLIII saying when he absolutely needed a long drive, he slowed down his swing just a little to make sure he hit it dead center. Missing the center by 1/4" can lose 5-7 yds and hitting it an inch on the toe can lose 20-28yds! We have all played with someone else (cough) that hits a big drive and comments "I wish I could do that every time but I don't know what I did different?" Easy, they hit the center. I think most golfers would gain more distance off the tee concentrating on ideal contact than increasing their swing speed. Younger players of course can chase more swing speed as long as they hone the rest of their game too. This point is exactly why I’m so interested in the TSr 2 driver. I’m so all over the face right now I want the most forgiving face there is. Last week I would have said a 3, but that’s fools gold for an aging erratic wild swinger. My mavrik is not forgiving at all, and is perfect proof that when your swing goes south, you need all the help you can get… JerryB, sirchunksalot and chisag 2 1 Quote TSr2 on tensi blue stiff Speedzone 3-wood on Tensi blue S Epic Max 5 and 7 woods on HZRDUS Reg flex Paradym 9 wood on HZRDUS reg flex P770 / P790 combo set on Ventus R-6 shafts 6-AW T22 Denim Copper 54°, 58° on Kinetic X Trajectory ER3 or, E.A.S. #4 (“Fang” or “Adele”) ProV1x, or, Maxfli Tour X .Org 14 cart bag Adidas Tour 360 , or Sketcher shoes
chisag
... Paired up with this "played high school" golfer in his early 40's that just bombed it off the tee yesterday. 5'9" and maybe 165 with a buggy whip swing and was hitting his 3 wood 20+ yds past my driver. On one hole I saw him use driver but lost it in the clouds and I hit a really good drive about 275 (desert roll included). After hitting my approach I started walking to the green looking on both sides for his ball and saw him drive his cart down the fairway to a ball a good 50 yds ahead. We calculated a 340 yd drive. A no doubt the shot of the day. David Leighton Reid, sirchunksalot, ejgaudette and 2 others 5 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... AutoFlex Dream 7 SF405 Fairway: Qi10 5 wood ... Someone once told me that the difference is because a poorly struck ball will have a better chance of rolling into the hole as opposed to a well struck ball that has sufficient spin to either spin back or stop quickly. Don't know if that's valid or not, but it sort of makes sense. But, you're right. I know a lot of scratch to low single digit players that have never aced a par 3 yet the 24 handicap player has 4 or 5 aces. Pretty amazing. ... We play a difficult par 3 where I normally use a 7 or 6 iron. Pretty much a one hop and stop hole unless into the wind then it spins back a little. My high index playing pard hit his 4 hybrid that landed a good 20 feet short and then rolled in like a putt for his only HIO. And it was a really good shot as he can hit some really bad ones on this hole. He rubs it in when he gets the chance and of course I absolutely deserve it. ... I am usually around 40-50 yds past him off the tee but when even farther I love to wave my arm in an exaggerated way saying "Hey Paul I am waaaaaaay up here!" One day we were playing an unfamiliar course and I pulled my drive a little but hit it dead solid into the sun so we didn't see it land. We were looking in the left rough just off the fairway as we all had it around the same spot. Paul takes a cart while we walk and he drove back to look and we heard him scream while waving his arm in an exaggerated way "Hey Sam you are waaaaaaay back here!" I had hit a skinny palm tree and it rolled backwards 50 yards. Karma. We all had a pretty good laugh over that one. Rickp, CarlH, cksurfdude and 1 other 4 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... Dog Faced Pony Soldier
Played Rock Spring in West Orange NJ yesterday. The place is on top of a hill; and it was windy. The wind coming off the left got in my head on the first tee, and I pulled the drive into the woods on the left side. This left me no clear shot at the pin so I punched out to the front of the green. JerryB
This is my "luck rather than skill" submission, lol. Hooked my driver and it clipped a tree keeping it from the cornfield OB. Hit my 7 wood too far to the right and it stopped on the downslope to the big waste area. Had I hit where I thought I was aiming it would have been in the hazard. Then I skulled my wedge directly into the bank of the raised green which got the ball to pop up and land on the back of the green. GolfSpy_APH
Hole of the day is one that didn't have a long drive by any means as I'll admit we had a group ahead of us and I had to throttle back a bit, however it still landed me in a great position. I had always been right on this hole and usually under this one stupid tree having to punch out so this time I made sure to be on the left side of the fairway and had a nice 8 iron in. Ended up pulling it a bit to the right, however still landed on the green and made monster putt that had two smaller breaks in it.
