RBC Canadian Open - 2022

Get your passports out, we're heading over the border for this weeks contest. The RBC Canadian Open at St. Georges Golf & Country Club. It's been 1093 days since we last played this stop and I'm sure I'm not the only one really happy all (well most) of the Covid crappola is behind us and this event can resume. Rory returns to defend his 2019 title and he'll need his B+ game or better to get past a pretty highly ranked field.

This event was first played in 1904 and is the 3rd oldest continuous stop on the PGA Tour (The Open and US Open #1 and #2).  Only Lee Trevino and some cat named Tiger have successfully won all three of these national events.  Surprisingly (and best I can find), no Canadian has ever won the title; with Mike Weir finishing runner-up in 2004, losing to VJ Singh. Well, I guess technically Englishman Pat Fletcher did in 1954 since his "sporting nationality" was under the Canadian flag.  But, "come on man" that's a sporting record asterisk if I ever saw one.  Maybe this will be the year that gets removed .

Picks are in for this US Open tuneup. Low confidence all around. Will Rory have 4 rounds? Scottie steamroll the field or miss the cut? Same for JT? Is Reed due.? Cam Smith still hot? Questions questions. The lower puddles of the pool are just as murky. Please make the cut, guys?

Players are withdrawing from this event left and right... lost count, but it's about 6 or so as it stands now. Not sure what the heck is going on; effects of LIV, second thoughts on playing before the US Open, Monkey-Pox???   They had about that many alternates but if more WD tomorrow could be a problem.

Lots of Canadians hoping Mike Weir would scratch out a spot for the weekend... but it wasn't to be. But, still a good showing though with; Taylor, Cockerill, Hadwin, Conners, Svensson, and Hughes in the mix.  The course is definitely penalizing errant shots and with some rain in the forecast both Sat & Sun, digging out of the lush green rough won't get any easier.

With everyone being within spitting distance of the leaders and with some of the scores posted today, if those early birds can get in their rounds before the rain, it could be a completely different leaderboard tomorrow night. This could shape up to be ... eh, who really cares, lets get to next week already.

Pat Fletcher was the last Canadian to win the Canadian Open in 1954.

Many Canadians won this event. Fletcher won many Provincial opens as well. It would be ice to see a Canadian win it, eg. Corrie Conners or Mike Weir to add to his 2003 Masters win.

Well then heck, there goes the drama .  I thought that, at the time he won he wasn't a Canadian resident but rather playing under the flag (as many players do these days).

Probably the best final round pairing of the year tomorrow.   Should be fun to watch.  Hope Rory can keep driving it like he did today and bring it home.

Reported to be playing in groups of 3 tomorrow, so last group will be Rory, Tony, and JT.  Should make it very worthwhile to watch this grouping.

How do you mean?  Admittedly, I haven't had time to watch much of any event the past few days but did see TGC's summary of the day segment and they spent lots more air time on RBC vs. LIV.

I’m also looking forward to watching this.  I wanted to watch the singles Curtis Cup but kinda got mixed up this morning.  Had my worst night since knee surgery and been not feeling well today. 
Maybe go a little lighter on PT today.

While I really don't care whether it succeeds or becomes a footnote in the annals of golf history, I find the whole storyline rather fascinating.  The "break-away" and "rogue" league monikers are actually helping the interest level. Will David slew Goliath... using a dump truck full of cash in lieu of a sling and rock?

Man, Rory is doing everything he can to win this.  Chip in birdie.  Now just hit his approach shot tight to the hole.  Looks like he is on a mission to make a statement.  However, it seems like no one is fading today.  This is fun.
